Can Consoles Run Crysis?

EG:

"It's just over two years since CryTek released its astonishing first-person shooter Crysis, and despite enormous technological leaps in the PC space, it remains the single most important game available for testing graphical performance. At maximum settings, even the most powerful available combination of CPU and GPU still cannot run this game at 1080p with a sustained, v-synced, 60 frames per second."

At a low setting yes, at a max setting obviously no. Console gaming it still struggling to run games on 720p at 60fps while on PC you can play them at 120fps and 1200resolution... That's higher than both the 60fps and 1080p that consoles can produce and lets not even talk about the texture quality and physics.

True, but Crysis is a different beast to most PC games, very few people get to experience the game at anywhere near max settings, let alone with 60FPS. In fact I dont think there is a single GPU available on the market today that can handle the game at 1080 with a stable 30+ FPS. Hence Crysis becoming a benchmark first, game second.

Still, I'm one of the fortunate few who can run the game a high settings, a good resolution and stable frame rate, and while I know a lot of people here at N4G wont like to believe it, but it looks better on my rig than anything the consoles have brought to the table (yet at least), but the consoles do offer more "bang for your buck", which helps towards their popularity.

It's true that Crysis does stand apart from other games in terms of system requirements (though it is possible for 30+FPS @ 1080p, but not 60+FPS on current single GPUs according to the article).

The article itself is interesting to see how well current consoles would deal with Crysis 1 (around medium settings, 720p, 15-30fps) but in none of the screen grabs did I see any people, only environment. I wonder how they would cope when the bullets start flying.

Not that this is knocking consoles. Anyone who's played the game will know that it still looks very good at medium settings, though the loss of global illumination would be noticable.

That is why people should take the tech demos of CE3 with a pinch of salt... The demo showed phenomenal graphics for consoles, I admit (even beating UC2 and KZ2), but realistically speaking, the games didn't even run at a constant 20FPS + without any AI and absolutely nothing but just you roaming around.

Tech demos are always like these where the frame rates are cut down considerably and all people go hooo haa when they see it, but the final product disappoints. Not saying CE3 won't be good, in fact it's might be the best multi-plat engine out there, but don't raise your hopes to seeing anything that looks as good as the demos shown at E3 especially since the demos also didn't use AA... Expect games to use it and BAM there goes the dream for PC graphics.

As far as Crysis is concerned, the max I have seen it is at 48FPS with the latest ATI 5970 card. My own Nvidia chokes at an abysmal 20FPS at very high and have to cut down on AA to make it playable. The max you can expect from consoles is medium settings on PC.... Only exclusives utilizing the console can come near Crysis on PC (that too not too much near)... Sorry but thats the truth.

Yup, the top of the line single GPUs can run it close to 60FPS. Looking forward to seeing what Fermi can do early next year.

And of course, for the financially comfortable, there's always SLI, Crossfire or 2 into 1 cards (295 or the X2 series), for when 60 FPS just isn't enough...

I own the 5870 and it is not fast enough to run Crysis at 60fps at any resolution I've tried from 1920x1200 to 1280x1024 with antialiasing disabled. At 1920x1200 it only runs around 30-40fps. This is in Windows 7 with a Phenom II 955 @ 3.6GHz with 4GB of DDR3.

sorry, Crysis does not look 'very good' on medium settings. Even if you go from Very High down to High you see big differences in every department (shadows, lighting, texture quality, poly count, the list goes on). The xbox360 is over 4 years old and the ps3 is only a year younger than that. Reasonably priced PCs are only srating to run Crysis fully maxed now, so there is no way that old tech can keep up with that.

Make no mistake, the console version of Crysis that is in development might look very nice, but it will no way look anything near as good as PC Crysis 1. Anyone who has played and finished the game on a nice machine will know exactly what I'm talking about.

no the engine has been massively tweaked to gain the availability to scale it down for consoles.

it will be better than crysis 1 if you own a REALLY EXPENSIVE PC

The 360 couldn't handle the PS3 versions of KZ2/U2. It would have worse graphics/FPS, that is what i meant. It could run KZ2/U2 but not on par with the PS3. Same with consoles with Crysis.

While GeOW looks good, it doesn't compare to killzone 2. Infact when I played through Crysis and Crysis Warhead just recently, I was not blown away by the graphics(GTX 260). Killzone 2 is an amazing game and is not that far off from Crysis.

Having said all that, I would still give Crysis a 10/10 for graphics, I was just expecting it to be a massive leap over KZ2, but it wasn't. Where it really matters is the gameplay though and thats where I give Crysis an 8/10. It wasn't that exciting, and honestly I prefered Far Cry 2(PS3) over Crysis by a long shot. BattleField: Bad Company is alot like Crysis with it being semi-open world, how the missions are structured and with having tanks , jeeps ect.. but Crysis fails to be anywhere near as good as BattleField: Bad Company. The online part of Crysis (crysis wars) sucked so bad its not even funny.

What I'm trying to say is don't believe the hype. From the PC side of things, I think Metro 2033(PC, XBOX 360) and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Prypyat(PC) might turn out to be 2 fantastic games to look forward to on PC. Outside of graphics, Crysis is over rated.

Listen now Sackboy.

Crysis has to do more processing because it's not a linear game. It has big open levels unlike Uncharted 2 or Killzone 2. Plus the physics also take a part from the proccessing power.

fishy the ati 5970 can run crysis at average 50 fps and max up to 60 max you would have to look at different benchmarks but that gpu is a beast and ill have it later today. ordered it from newegg was supposed to get it here yesterday but bad weather.

but the gpu was 727$ total

Look up on youtube. I think it was Maxishine who got 90fps average on Crysis all settings maxed, although it was with 3 GTX280s. And I get 50fps average with 2 GTX275s at 1920x1200.

Yes. I had a 7800 GT and a dual core CPU when Crysis came out and I was able to run on low-medium settings.

My comp back then was pretty much the same as a 360 and a little bit off of a PS3.

So it had 512mb of RAM did it? Doubt it, even if it had an extra 512ram to allow for the OS it wouldn't run as well as it will on consoles. (Crysis 2 that is)

Your comment is extremely confusing. Are you referring to his past technology, or current vs consoles?

I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to convey to us, but I think it's you trying to tell us that graphics cards don't even have enough RAM to run as efficiently as consoles, which don't even exceed 512 MB?

7800 GT 512MB: http://www.nvidia.com/page/...

Graphics cards reach up to 2 GB of GDDR5 memory. You realize this, right?

LittleSack is just saying that an equivalent PC setup (to a console) would have 512M RAM, no more than that, and he doesnt believe (neither I do) such PC would be able to boot the OS let alone to run a game like Crysis. Not to mention that Panda's Nvidia 7800 gfx card has a large amount of memory by itself.

In summary, a PC with the same resources than a current gen console isnt capable to run pacman.

That's bullshit. WinXP runs fine with 512MB RAM. Granted, it's not enough for Crysis, but still, older Games would run fine (that includes PacMan).

Come on @above.

Obviously the pacman reference was made to emphasize, it shouldnt be taken literally.

And Panda 1G = 512M x 2, it certainly means nothing when talking about PCs but thats a whole LOT on consoles, however your system actually had 1024M + 512M (VRAM) = 1.5G total, 3 x PS3 memory.

In the current form it is now no it will not run it effectively enough, but with tweaking I will be able to be played on consoles in the future. We will see how it works out with Crysis 2. I am sure the PC version will be far better then the console counter parts.

you'd amazed to know 5970 actually runs pretty cool.

its much cooler then my 4870x2. My case temps have fallen by 4-5c since i changed the gpus, this is at idle (this happens because @ idle one of the gpus shuts down saving power). However even while running games my case just stays alot cooler the fan on the 5970 can hardly be heard which tells me the gpu isnt getting much hot otherwise the fan should be blowing like a jet engine.

also yes the 5970 is a dual gpu solution.

When people think of Crysis and PC games in general, they think of massively high resolutions supported by small PC monitors. The capability for consoles to run games at those resolutions is moot when the televisions they're played on cap at 1080p. Can consoles run Crysis at 1080p? Probably not very well. I think 720p is definitely plausible. Next gen will be 1080p at 60-120Hz across the board. The quality bar will be set by how much you can get on screen in that arrangement. I think that's plenty to enjoy any experience from your couch.

Pretty much what he said, majority of PC users use 1050, 1080, or 1200 resolution scaling, this is very demanding on games like Crysis.

Its the main reason why I prefer PC gaming to my PS3, 1080p in every game, 4xMSAA, v-sync locked, no framerate issues.

Granted I have more investing in my PC than my PS3, but I guess I should be thankful for that.

Love my PS3 for GT5p though, looks decent for a PS3 game, some bad AA here and there, but the gameplay >>>>> graphics =)

edit-I think the main issue for Crysis 1 (low, med, high, w/e setting)on consoles is memory, I seem to remember my PC holding over 1 gigs of ram for each level.

Maybe Crysis can run on consoles, but it would have to be really scaled back. My rig barely manages 17-24FPS with 2xAA at 1920x1200 with Very High setting with cards I have. I'm still using 2 8800 Ultra's at the moment. Check out Maxishine's videos with the new 5970 he has. He manages to get a maximum of 86FPS on Warhead at 1920x1200 | No AA | Enthusiast settings..
