Metroid Prime Still Has A Future

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption may not be the last game in the Prime series. With Other M on the way next year, some might have thought that the Prime series had come to an end but, as Nintendo's Kensuke Tanabe told ONM, the series may still have a future.

Asked whether Samus will ever return to DS, Tanabe (who oversaw Retro Studios' series for Nintendo) said "We are always planning to make new games in the Metroid Prime series. Depending on the timing and the situation, we cannot deny the possibility of realising it on DS or DSi."

Another Prime game? Really, I think they're starting to get stale. The first was amazing, but each new entry felt like a step backwards, in terms of gameplay. Give it a rest, already. One of the reasons the first Prime game was so fantastic was because it was unlike anything we've ever seen before. Other M looks like a nice new departure. That's what the series needs. Revitalization.

There's plenty that could still be done FPS like Prime but without the prefix that STILL stay fresh-Dread would be cool or playing from the spacepirates PoV.

FPS games have a habit of being rather like games that came before them. That's just the nature of the genre (even if Nintendo likes saying FPA).

If they released another Prime game, I'd buy it first day, beat it and love every second of it. But part of me wants them to keep the Trilogy as-is on consoles. A new handheld title is another story, but I don't want another Prime game on a console unless Retro is building it...and they seem to need a rest from Samus. She's kinda demanding.

Please don't slam the disagree button, but even though i've owned every single nintendo console....I have never even played a metroid game. I was always into the star wars/mario games more than anything. Maybe it wasn't as big in AUS....or maybe i've lived a sheltered life

You really are missing out on some quality gaming. Get Super Metroid and work your way up through the Metroid games from there. Gaming bliss.

dchalfont -- I'm a late Metroid convert. If you like Mario and Star Wars games...well, you've kinda got the best of both worlds with 'Troid: platforming and adventure in space.

Cagney is right about Super Metroid. It's one of the greatest games ever made. If you are absolutely married to 3D environments, then the Prime Trilogy would be a better place to start. But if you don't mind going back in time to 2D sidescrolling, Super Metroid is as good as it gets.

...this thread is making me drool for Other M. I just watched the E3 trailer again.

You really should pick up any Metroid game. I don't there has ever been a dud in the series off the top of my head. Both the side scrolling games and the prime series are fantastic. I started off on Metroid II for the Gameboy which some might say was one of the weaker titles, but I loved it and every game every that has come out since then.

3 - there was a time
When I'd be ok with this. It's like the only good Nintendo franchise. And before you all slam disagree Mario etc have too much shovelware that bring them down.
But, I'm not ok with it. This is annoying. Nintendo. FFS. DO SOMETHING NEW!

I'm not gonna give you a disagree or anything...but I can't say I agree with you. Yeah, Mario gets spammed all over the mascot games. But dedicated console Super Mario platformers?

Super Mario 1-3, SMW, Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy and NSMB.

That's it. 8 games in 24 years.

Console versions of Zelda and Metroid are even rarer.

Yet no one bats an eye at how many GTA, Halo, COD, MOH, Madden, etc. games we get.

Pikmin, Battalion Wars and the revamped Prime games were all very different, new endeavors for Nintendo last gen.

I think Galaxy qualifies as something very different for Mario this gen.
The new controls in Corruption completely changed Prime.
And the next Zelda will be all about Motion Plus.
These are all new things, just done with long-time franchises, much like COD4's changes.

I'd love new IP from Nintendo, too. But people still want KI, F-Zero, Star Fox and Kirby.

So what does Nintendo do? Release Dynamic Slash here in the U.S., or listen to long-time fans and give them Star Fox?
I can't answer that.
