MGS: Peace Walker - A true Metal Gear on PSP?

"I've learned something… I'm not living unless I'm in battle" – Big Boss

"Ask me what my favourite game series is and I'll tell you Metal Gear Solid. Ask me my favourite MGS game and I'll tell you, without a blink, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. A new rival is set to join the series, with the PSP taking another bite of the action."

Hit the jump for impressions of the E3 trailer and what Kojima may have in store for PSP owners.

I don't think it's possible to have a 'true' MGS on a portable platform, they just can't scope out the epic feeling of the console counterparts.

1.3 - I love the MGS: Peace Walker logo! :)
PS3 owners can get it off wikipedia and "save image" to your HDD. Great quality wallpaper for XMB. :)

can't wait for this.

I think epicness has nothing to do with graphics or screen size.

@1.1: The quality of a trailer does not guarantee the quality of the game itself.

@1.2: Almost as disturbing as your blind faith. Oh, and by the way, if you're gonna quote something, you better quote it exactly, otherwise it ruins the point.

I'm gonna be "cautiously optimistic" about this game. It's not that I doubt Kojima, it's just that I doubt technology; Kojima isn't a god, and thus can't suddenly make a game that surpasses the PSP's hardware limitations twenty fold.

Besides, they already tried making a "true" Metal Gear in the form of Portable Ops, and that was kinda lackluster compared to the console series, though it was still a strong showing. If they can do better with Peace Walker, then congratulations to them, but until then, we can only wait and see. I have my hopes up, of course. But the future guarantees nothing.

If Kojima made a true MGS on PS1, you can be darn sure he can make a true MGS on the PSP. It's all in the creativity, not the power of the system.

anything that Kojima Touches, turns into gold.

Portable Ops was a good game, but it didn't play well either, did like its concept of recruiting soldiers. But with What his dev team has learned so far with PSP development (Graphics, gameplay, lack of 2nd analog stick), they will make the Ultimate Metal Gear PSP game.

It's a scam by SONY/Kojima to make us buy a PSP. I really can't be arsed with one but if it means playing the next metal gear solid then i might just have to buy one. God dammit...

I don't think Portable Ops was all that bad though it was clearly an experiment of sorts.

Peace Walker definitely seems like a step forward.

I liked portable ops. Heck, i even like the "cinematics" of how the story was delivered. Kojima somehow made it all work. I was surprised and Jonathan dying was F-ed up!

Ehh... Kojima didn't design, direct and produce Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

Therefore MGS Portable OPS was a spin-off.

Edit: Didn't anyone notice the number 5 in Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker? It's obvious, if you some of you didn't catch it, I suggest you go back and watch it. There's 5 number at the beginning and the end.

At the beginning http://www.imagebam.com/ima...
At the end http://www.imagebam.com/ima...

Therefore Peace Walker is truly sequel/prequel.

2.5 - To Clarify on that statement
the Portable Ops story wasn't a spin off, it was a sequel, but its gameplay was different. it didn't follow the gameplay of traditional Metal Gear Games.

Peace Walker is a game that's going to take full advantage of the PSP (from the Processor which was unlocked to allow devs to use the full 333mhz of power, and im pretty sure they're going to attempt to work around the lack of the missing 2nd Analog stick).

From what I've seen so far with that Trailer, you can notice how much has changed from Portable Ops to Peace Walker, this is the most good looking Metal Gear PSP game yet.

"the Portable Ops story wasn't a spin off" No, it was a spin-off.

All of MGS game except the first one has title like

Sons of Liberty
Snake Eater
Guns of the Patriots
Peace Walker

Portable ops << what kinda title is that???

@3sq, so let me ge this straight, PO is a spinoff cuz you personally dont like then name? O.o

have you even played PO? If you had played it you will know it starts 6 years after Snake Eater and that Peace Walker is set 4 years after Portable Ops

...sigh

But all the gameplay mechanics were designed by someone else.

I'm not exactly blown away by this game, but it does seem a step forward, or at least I step in the right direction for portable games.

I think it will be epic... I hold epic handheld games to a different standard than home consoles... Its nothing to do with limitations at all its just handheld games and home console games cater to two different needs of mine... Overall I dont think it can match the epic feel of MGS on a home console... But it has the potential to be an epic handheld game

12 - I doubt this is a real MGS solid regardless...
When do you force your whole fanbase to buy hand held if they wanna continue the series?...

Imagine if this was another game doing the same... This might be some deal with Sony to boost the psp sales. Something is happening inthe backgrounds over there at Konami.

"I think epicness has nothing to do with graphics or screen size."

My golly that means plenty of DS games/franchises must be epic yet we still bash them on graphics.

Like the Dragon Quest series continuing on the DS? They made their fanbase do the same and apparently it worked. Then again many of them would be Japanese probably had a DS already.

Still though, same thing in principle. If it sells and Sony gets more PSP sales then it's a win-win for all involved. Except us poor gamers with no money!

Never heard of Portable Ops? Direct sequel to MGS3? Your loss. Peace Walker will be chronologically closer to Portable Ops than Snake Eater, but there's still a missing piece in the canon; Big Boss' mission in Hanoi, which occurred before the establishment of Outer Heaven.
