Square Enix's Sales Down 74%? Just Wait Until Dissidia Hits

In a recent study, it was unveiled that this year Square Enix's sales were down by 74%. This was partly because the bulk of Crisis Core's Japanese sales came in 2007, but it still performed well when it was released in other regions earlier this year. The main reason for Square Enix's lacklustre sales this year is the absence of any other strong titles, which is where Dissidia: Final Fantasy comes in.
Updates:
It should be 63%, not 74%.

Come now, wouldn't you rather they spent time on games like Sigma Harmonics than AAA titles? Obviously they think so.

1.2 - sad!? Or benefit for us!?
Is it sad that Square Enix needs Final Fantasy to live? Or is it a benefit for us that maybe they start to realize it and make more FF games! hmm... I mean MORE than already!

Maybe if they made games that everyone could buy, they would have better sales.

Okay so now what the hell is the point with multiplatform games? I thought they suppose to increase sales and "allow more people to experience games". In 2007 the square enix were still exclusive and now they are multiplatform in 2008, yet there sales are lower in 2008. Exclusives make for better games AND BETTER SALES.

Square-Enix is starting to notice that they can't get away with shovelware forever. Or maybe they're also starting to realize that they're just not cut out for making jRPGs anymore. IMO FFX was the last great FF.

1.7 - Maybe they should start...
releasing games on the PS3 so they start increasing sales numbers because its a proven fact that the 360 fan base don't buy RPGs and the 360 is a minority on Japan, the biggest RPG market in the world...

PS3 is the way to go for square enix if they want to make money. Multiplatform or not they need the PS3 to survive...

sales are down as there games are on 360 rather than ps3 which is the problem as most there fans have ps3's so they are catering to the wrong people. Rookie mistake and its costing them nothing but poor sales and do they learn and at least make the rest multiplatform? no! instead they make there ps3 exclusive multiplatform thus delaying it another year! talk about cutting your own wrists..

The recent study in question corrected their data and lowered it down to 63%:

http://chartget.blogspot.co...

(make sure and correct that both in the article and in the title please!)

No doubt, the coming Dissidia, Dragon Quest IX, and FFXIII will definitely help. On top of that, they'll be awesome.

6.1 - The thing is, thats probably true.
A lot of people who play JRPGs look to Japan to see whats hot. Square cannot crap the western market more then they have. They need to stick to what they do best, and thats the eastern market.

SE is down 74% because a majority of their sales belong to Sony which means IMO no PS3 selling no software selling.

Umm, no, that's not true.

Sony's stake in Square was drastically reduced upon the merger with Enix. SE sales =/= Sony sales.

The fact is, SE sales have gone down the loo, because they've focused on portable titles, and released poor quality title after poor quality title.

A Majority of SE's sales were on Sony platforms in the past, now there's not to many Sony releases............

SquareEnix should have a really good year next year, especially if both Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII are released next year in Japan for the PS3 in addition to Dissida... I guess that Star Ocean 4 will be a major title too, but it's a shame that it's sales will be so limited to just the 360. Once SquareEnix sees FFXIII's sales on the PS3, I think they'll probably consider bringing Star Ocean 4 to the PS3.

And Once Square finally gets one of their big games like FFXIII released on the PS3, I think they'll finally wake up and see how important the Playstation platform is them financially.

11.1 - it depends....
M$ has a lot of resources ($$$$$$) and they don't hesitate on paying for exclusivity. They can actually pay SE the quantity they would've made out of the game if it came out on the PS3. The only solution to that is if the PS3 can catch and pass the 360's install base by a couple millions.

15 - How does this crap get approved?
Square/Enix financial statement released for investors shows that sales are up their first 2 quarters this fiscal year compared to the same 2 quarters last fiscal year. Businesses do not run on calender years, they run on fiscal years. They release software during the fiscal year to meet their goals. Square/Enix is actually up in sales.

Chartget is a user generated blog that generates reports based on calender years. The report in question was Japanese sales only and did not reflect sales based on Square/Enix's financials. In short they "guessed". PS3 fanboys ran wild with the story and exaggerated it to the point that they feel Square is doomed without them.

You guys are getting worked up over mis-leading and inaccurate information.

Square has been making shelveware for decates. (Bouncer/Einhander anyone?) Their low sales have nothing to do with what consoles their games are on. It's because both 360 and Playstation consoles are sucking so bad in sells across the globe, that Square has no choice but to make rash decision. Plus, Square has not released their big name games on next-gen consoles yet. What has Square released on consoles to boost sales for them so far this year? A new IP called The Last Remnant and the published Tri-ace game, Infinite Undiscovery? Was any Playstation or 360 own really excited about these two games coming out? Nope, not one bit.

I mean come on. You know that if it does not have Final, Kingdom or Dragon in it's title, no one will even care if it was made or published by Square. Look at games like Tobal No1, Bushido Blade, Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, Chrono Cross, Front Mission and the first Xenogears. These were pretty good games for their time, that a lot of people passed over. But I guess loyalty only go as far as FF7 and up.

In my eyes, Chrono Trigger is what made Square popular, Final Fantasy simply made them a house hold name.

19 - I've only played 5 RPGs
FF7, FF10, Chrono Trigger, Shadow Hearts & Crisis Core. I played 'em in that order too.

FF7 was a good game with an excellent story and amazing sound track. This game is the only reason I played Crisis Core.

FF10 was mediocre, the only reason I got it was the graphics (big mistake), I liked FF7, and because I only had 50 bucks to spend on games for 2 months. (which is the only reason i beat it) The level up system/grid was the only part of that game I really liked. Sure it had its moments, but they were few and far between.

Chono Trigger was Probably my favorite RPG, and I played it after the almighty FF7. This game was from the 2d snes era and it still has a notch up on FF7. The Killing of the main character, time traveling puzzles, and leveling up the characters combined attacks was really cool and original for me. Plus the story was good.

Shadow Hearts was, eh... I really tried to like this game, but I couldn't even finish it. I did like the wheel timing part though. It added something new to the battles, and gave you some control over your attacks.

Crisis Core was just a filler. Like I said above the only reason I played this was because of FF7. I really liked the FF7 story and it was worth playing an average (at best) game to delve deeper into it. I'm glad it wasn't turn based like FF7, but it was way too easy and random. I would have liked it, more, if it had actually required some skill to defeat... anyone.

The only reason I want SE back on the PS3 is because thats where they belong. If they continue to side with the devil (M$) and only worry about profit and a wider appeal, that will just insure that I never buy a game from them, because the quality will surely drop. You cannot, CAN NOT, please everyone.
