IGN : Where the Hell,PSN??!!

IGN Playstation Team writes "As far as the PSN is concerned, Sony's fledgling service has had serious ups and downs in its two year existence. In many ways, the largest advantage is that PS3 owners get an online service, complete with browsers and search engine, as well as messaging and friends lists for free. The inclusion of Life with PlayStation (which is the evolution of the widely acclaimed Folding@Home project) was a great touch, and the recent addition of Trophies provides bragging rights and rewards for playing PS3 games. Even the video and voice chat is an excellent option for friends that want to communicate. "

This is a little off topic, but the need to display your trophy level beside your name, so people dont have to click on your name to see it.

1.1 - Castlevania: SotN
Best PSN purchase EVER!! ^_^

Now if only Konami set out to make an HD remake for Castlevania: SotN with co-op online/offline, leaderboards, etc.

Well that was stupid. The movies are clearly hard to get and it won't just happen over night, and as for the games PSN is filled with lots of unique exclusive games people actually want to play. XBL just has a bunch of remakes and crud, which while good, don't add anything new.

2.1 - Don't know what the hell your talking about
Obviously you haven't played castle crashers or omega five. "Don't add anything new"? Why should it? The remakes are updated with slightly better graphics and sometimes online-play mechanics, making them superior most of the time to their original counterparts. As for the "games people actually want to play", that's just opinion. There's different taste of games on both psn and xbl.

I don't know what the guy that wrote this is smoking but PSN has been getting more content per week than Xbox live for quite a while (what Xbox live gets in one week is not as much as PSN gets in one day a week).

I know people keep using the fact that PSN doesn't have that many PS1 games to download as a way to criticize PSN, but does that many people care other than Xbots.

I don't know what Xbox live is getting thats different from what PSN is getting except for video content (Netflix, Music videos, and some internet videos) nothing that really makes me think the Xbox Live is leaps and bounds better than PSN.

Netflix streaming video isn't that great and you have to subscribe to Netlix service to use it, its an option but its not free. I do have to admit I use it, but I wouldn't have picked one system over the other for that.

The games that PSN offers are just as good as what Xbox live offers but with no limits to data size and some are full retail games.

Sony has said that Home will release in a public beta this month. They have said that it will always be in beta because the content and features will constantly change.

Get your head checked, mate.

"PSN has been getting more content per week than Xbox live for quite a while (what Xbox live gets in one week is not as much as PSN gets in one day a week)"

Look here...

Videogamer: DLC Royal Rumble - PS3 vs Xbox 360 vs Wii

Go back and look at prior weeks, XBL always wins because it has more content every single week.

So what if Microsoft has those live arcade games, I'm quite sure they have their own exclusives on there. And all the movies he mentions... are on blu-ray.

I think its just a good way to help let Sony know that it wouldn't be unethical or anything to take away some of the XBLA exclusives. While our talks on forums might be missed by Sony PR/Marketing/Execs, this won't be.

Most of these are really just up to the publishers. As for old games, I don't really care for them. I got Street Fighter Alpha, and I won't make a mistake like that again. I'd prefer remakes or games made specifically for PSN. The only way I'll buy another PS1 game is if its something I missed out on (Blood Omen comes to mind).

I don't think I'd ever buy an old Sonic game, but I'd love an HD remake/sequel. I'm pretty sure that's the only way Sega will make a good Sonic game anyway.

Cen, I agree with you. I had a nostalgic feeling for the R-Type download, so when it came out I went out and bought it.. then after a while, I just realized, I kind of wasted my pocket cash on that one.

I definitely disagree with their "weak line-up" argument however... Simplistic games for the most part, perhaps; but to me XBLA has yet made a game that competes with (and it's just my humble opinion) Super Stardust, Snakeball, HVB, Echochrome, TLG, and Wipeout HD. (they may be out there, I just dont' know...) Obviously the PSN doesn't have anything along the lines of Braid for instance, but they've got enough solid stars in their own lineup to not be called "weak" or lacking in titles.

When I think Braid I just think unique, and PSN has plenty of unique games as well. PJ Eden is the first thing that comes to mind. It is definitley different then other games, and I found it to be very enjoyable.

Games like that make it hard for me to understand why people think the line up is weak. I'm all about quality over quantity anyway (I can't afford every single game that comes out, anyway).

I wish there were more PS1 games. Especially classic RPGs. And sega beat-em-ups too

DOOM, I can play it on the PC, but if I missed a game like FF9 or Lunar and I'm not a pirate, it's quite hard to get.

another lame attempt at IGN...
PSN attributes far outweigh the tiny negatives.
its a free online service which continues to expand..browser integration and an app like Home...way over shadow the nits IGN is moaning about.
and about the movies, guess they havent looked at the paltry stale lineup of netflix

They gotta be kidding me.....

Most of the games they have listed I've got, or had or can easily get them on PC!

Talk about nit-picking. The reason that I like PSN is that most of the games are original. I've spent a bucket load on the PSN so far.....and when I first got my PS3 I swore I wouldn't buy anything off the store as I thought they would just re-release games I had already played in my past.

25 psn games later.....lol

IGN just keeps adding to the pot of "game journalism" that ignores serious issues (used game market, advertising, how reviews can influence sales) and instead focus on lame things like this, top 10 lists, and "versus" articles.

I don't know how anyone considers these sites "news" any more.

I don't know about other people but I have too many PS3 games to play now so I really don't care if we get tons of junk on PSN. I'd prefer quality over quantity. In the early days of the PS3 it was more important since there wasn't much out for the PS3. Not anymore.

IGN has been bad these past weeks, ya ignore the major titles that hit PSN like Wipeout HD and Siren, both basically disc quality games only available via PSN.

PixelJunk Eden and PixelJunk Mosters are also heavy contenders.

IGN needs to realize that a lot of XBL games come from small devs that usually choose XBL since there it has potential to excel and possibly sell well while keeping costs low. Also creating for the 360 is similar to a PC which most smaller devs are likely using. PS3 is a very different machine, most of its game come from larger publishers and first party devs.

Think IGN, seriously.

I like playing new experiences not reliving old ones and thats what psn offers. I don't need to play older games for the sake of nostalgia. F*** I'm 26 and have been a gamer all my life ... I'm spoiled by the new .. there is so many games out this day and age that theres no point for me to back track myself unless its a very story driven game but I've played so many rpgs that I'll save my precious time to be Wow'd by the new and innovative... but I'm tired for right now but I will commend Sony on thier online structure to always keep me coming back for more with thier innovative, fun and new worthwhile titles without the clutter of games that don't need to be there

Notice how the author talks about Home being delayed so many times. Yet he doesn't really mention that 1. The beta is now out and 2. It will be out by the end of the month.

The addition of Home is huge for PSN.

Combine all the new features they added over the summer and PSN will start to boom.

who cares, I dont have to pay for it, so its superior already. You dont have to pay to play online on a Pc, why would it be different on a console? Oh wait, its Microsoft, you are not going anywhere today.

I guess its all opinion, but I FAR prfer the titles I get from PSN over what I get on the 360 and Wii.

I run emulators on my PC and play all the old classics there when I want retro gaming. But for new and interesting titles, the PS3 has tons that I've really enjoyed - and a majority are in full 1080P NATIVE output too (something you don't get anywhere else).

I've spent countless hours on Pixel Junk Mosters and Eden, Pain, Super Stardust HD, Wipeout HD, Siren, Gran Turismo 5 Prolougue and Warhawk, to name just some of the classic PSN games, so original content is certainly not 'weak' for me.

As for films - the service isn't even available outside of the US, but I have no interest in it at all. Unblike other systems, the PS3 does run a browser with streaming online palyback and full page flash movies too if I really want compressed DL video (which I don't). I don't use the movie service on my 360 either.

Whilst I certainly wouldn't object to any of the titles the article discusses coming to the PSN, I do think the article is unfairly critical of what I find to be the best qulaity line up of downloadable titles on the current gen machines.

Sony has movies up on PSN...

I'll buy good movies on Bluray because the quality is far superior and I can watch it as many times as I want. I don't actually use the PSN movie service (for a number of reasons), but I'm sure other people do.
