Americas Sales for the Week Ending November 22, 2008

In the lead up to Black Friday, videogame sales continue ramp up in the Americas. Hardware sales increased to over 1m units this week, up 15% from last week. The total hardware sold is less than a year ago at this time, when Black Friday arrived earlier than in 2008. However, outside of that timing difference, the recession does not appear to be harming the industry. The real reason for the seasonal increases is of course the volume of top software released. Left 4 Dead, Animal Crossing, Need For Speed, as well as new entries in the Mortal Kombat and Tomb Raider series pushed all hardware sales up except for Wii, which is being withheld a bit for an enormous stock deployment on Black Friday.

hyped to be a Gears of War 2 competitor, but ps3 owners aren't even supporting their exclusive, they choose Call of Duty instead

4 - Did anybody else go out today for shopping?

The amount of 360 bundles and sells will end up being crazy....while I am sure there was some ps3s sold, I did not see a single person purchase one while I was in and out of stores. It seems like Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Circuit City were all in favor of 360s as they had tickets for them, and them stock behind the counter. Any advertising for the ps3 has been pretty much nonexistent. I did see Wiis being sold as well.

Just got back and I was surprised how few 360's were left on the store shelves and it's only really the first crazy shopping day leading up to X-Mas. Wii was nowhere to be found and stacks of PS3's at Best Buy. BB is sure trying to push Blu-ray and the PS3 all over the store on the endcaps were BR discs and players. Didn't see a single purchase of either, if that means anything.

To be fair, I've seen a lot more PS3 advertising lately. Especially during the Cowboys game yesterday.

As for the topic at hand, there were some really sweet 360 bundles out there today. Walmart had a Arcade bundle with Sega Superstars Tennis and a Guitar Hero 3 bundle for $199. That's a good deal, even for an Arcade system. Best Buy had a 360 Pro system with 4 games for $299 this morning, too. Those things were practically walking out of the store.

The PS3 wasn't doing too bad, either. They had an 80GB model with Ratchet and Clank and Casino Royale Blu-Ray for $399.

I'll get disagrees for it, but the 360 bundle appeared to be outselling the PS3 bundle at least 3 to 1. They also had more 360's on the sales floor.

Yeah its so sad I work at Target and we sold mostly 360 and wii's. I started working at 8-3 and we sold about 10-13 360's and about 4 ps3's this when i was at the counter. Sad

P.S. anyone looking to buy dead space its on sale for $30 dollars at target today and tomorrow

Banjo's mixed reviews don't seem to be hurting it so far. Expect a good increase when kids get their 360s and post-Christmas gift cards.

I'm more impressed with deBlob's sales...it's a very good platformer/puzzle game.

Things looking brighter and brighter for MS this gen. Their strategy worked even though they suffered the RROD syndrome because of chinese quality issue. I hope ps3 sales do pick up and sony doesn't pull a xbox1 on ps3 and end it cuz competition is whats making both do some great stuff for us consumers.

Vgchartz has been proven to be estimating sales accurately enough to be considered a good guide to overall sales.

Often they are wrong, but they have recently overstated ps3 sales as often as 360 sales in the past.
