Take into consideration that many times in Japan, when something new/updated is released there's a large segment of the population that just upgrades. This does not actually reflect potential new users, but rather users who want to replace their DS lite. The best guage of new users would be to see if older games sell more or if newer games sell more.

This isn't the first time, check the stats from last year when the PSP-2000 was released, you'll see a spike in sales too.

I hope so.No point in having the PSP around if Sony won't even compete with it.

Well no $hit. Nintendo comes out with a new version of the already established and winning handheld and of course Japan absorbs the new version. Japan loves every new piece of tech that's affordable. The DSi isn't even really new, but since it's Nintendo and it's "new", a crapload of people are buying it. The PSP was on top for a little while because everyone in Japan already had the DS Lite and it had some games that the DS didn't have. Now that there's a new DS available, everyone has to buy it over again. Just a personal perspective here, but that seems to be the way it was going. The DS Lite sold a lot in Japan for a long time, but sales died down after a time and let the PSP take over for a while. Now there's a new version available that's not really all that better than the Lite, and everyone's buying it again. It's no surprise that the new DS eclipses the PSP. Despite the new DSi doing well the PSP appeals to the Sony gamers and will continue to do so and that guarantees it won't go down without something of a fight.

The end is coming...

This one will mark the end of this gen in portable market in Japan.

DQ IX !

there is no game left to release after that. everything else will be gravy afterwards.

To be realistic, the golden week next year, which is very smart on SquareEnix's part to release DQ IX. That game is going to add many tombstones to the chart.

Wow seems 2008 is the first real battle with DS and PSP. Kind of cool to see them smacking it out. Square Enix is playing it right in terms of not helping one win outright. A lot of smaller titles on DS with some big titles on PSP at first soon their biggest title on DS and some larger scaled games on PSP for the upcoming battle :)

9 - I was already expecting for that ..
Offcourse that would happen since the new PSP 3000 did not bring any thing worth buying that the older model did not have already .If it had at least a less bugged lcd screen and a more powerfull basttery coming with it the story could be different.

What ppl loved about this DSi is about buying games online(GBA) and the new DS also brought a little bigger screen among also more bright
(like the PSp 3000)and two cameras.

I have both normal DS light and a PSP 2000 and if I plan to later on upgrade one of then I will sure go for the new DSi since it seems hell more worth buying.
