PSP outsells every other console combined in Japan

Today, chart data from Famitsu based on software and console sales for last week (March 24-30th) shows what sort of impact Monster Hunter 2nd Portable G has had on console sales in Japan.

Last week PSP actually managed to sell more units than all of its competitor consoles put together. The handheld sold approximately 139,000 units, compared to (rounded up or down) 57,000 DSs, 49,000 Wiis, 13,000 PS3s and 2,800 Xbox 360s.

But but, PSP needs help and is dying and blah blah blah blah. Let this be a lesson to naysayers, naysay no more!! I want that Monster Hunter PSP, it's the first time I thought one other than the default Black and Piano Black looked cool. The white is ok but distracting. I'm still holding out hope for PS3 Monster Hunter with online mode. ..and some persistence. That'd print money for Capcom in Japan.

That's amazing it is selling so well. And over Monster Hunter. I guess that shows the difference between Japan and the rest of the world. They go nuts over a game like that.

1.4 - the funny thing is i just read few days ago in n4g an article from a fanboy
saying that psp reached its half life and its peek, so in other word psp is dying from here on, thats what he was saying, well either he is a fanboy or about to be fired from his bad future sight, just few days after his article psp out sells all consoles in japan and sales of one game in 6 days is one million, well i dont see psp is dying any time soon, in fact i see it only increasing in hardware and software sales. i will by a psp sometime down the road but now i dont have time for it! my priority is to buy a ps3 now after i finish university!

Definately get a PSP after you get the PS3 then, the two systems complement each other SO well that Sony should pack in a Slim with every PS3.

Also yes, that guy was very much wrong the PSP is just getting started. Sony released the processor limit they placed on developers and now we get games of God of War calibre which looks better than the first did on PS2. Crisis Core was still under the limit afaik but it's an outstanding game nonetheless. Now there's no telling what's going to come to the system now.

i heard this limit topic before but can u tell me please more about it? i mean what limit and how sony released the limit, and why they limited it?

here i have the link to the article that claims "Signs Suggest a Mid-life Crisis for PSP"
March 30th, 2008 written by Kris
http://n4g.com/psp/NewsCom-...
from the website portablevideogamer.com

guys make sure u dont visit that site due its been handled by anti sony fanboys!

ironic, he claims "Signs Suggest a Mid-life Crisis for PSP" and after 3 days psp sales is breaking new records in japan! and its just started to take more market share!

EDIT

psp is here to stay at least for the next 5 years, with the advance tech in the psp which is much ahead of the DS it can last longer, it might even compete with the next nintendo handled if they release it with low tech like they did with DS!

1.7 - Nintendo DS is more comparable to a binki than the PSP
I don't even know why we bother comparing the DS to the PSP. They’re so far away from being on the same level. Literally the DS success comes from the cheap price parents are willing to shell out to shut their kids up for a few hours. It entertains them... in a way it's kind of an electronic binki.

lol don't lie

unfortunately, it's not as future-proof as the PS3

Sony needs to make a PSP2 with a huge hardware upgrade, two analogue sticks (big one) and very strong anti-piracy security upgrades

then they could for a 5, 6 or even 7-year cycle

For one country? I'd imagine the DS has done it, though the chances are lower when there's a hot selling console like the Wii around.

We get so used to the DS selling insane numbers that we don't even compare it to the rest.

Im glad. PSP really deserves it. I just do not understand people who buy DS's, or more to the point why the DS is so successful. Literally no games on the DS appeal to me. But then again, im not a mum

"I just do not understand people who buy DS's, or more to the point why the DS is so successful."

A lot of things are like that. Just gotta understand that everyone has different tastes and that those tastes are valid, cause this is entertainment. So whatever entertains anyone is valid.

I, for example, am only even slightly interested in one game on the 360 (Bioshock). So I'd never buy it. The PSP only has Crisis Core and Patapon for me. I'm closer to a purchase on that, but I'll still probably never take the plunge.

Whereas the DS, Wii and PS3 all interest me greatly. Still haven't gotten the DS, though, cause I really don't have time for mobile gaming.

5.2 - "Literally no games on the DS appeal to me"
i couldn't agree more. i just don't see the appeal. my mother wanted one for Brain Age so i got her one. now it sits up gathering dust, she played it for two days and has forgotten all about it. i, having a slim psp and ps3, am not at all interested AT ALL in anything the DS offers.

but like Kholinar said, to each its own. i can't put people down for buying a DS, but i sure can point and laugh.

I said this a week ago in my article "PSP... Potential about to explode"
The PSP is gaining so much steam lately.
It was just ahead of its time. Much like the PS3. When they both were released, there wasnt much of a need for the functionality they offered.

Now a couple years later now that digital and HD entertainment is prominent, and the need for an all-in-one device is becoming ideal.... People are finally starting to realize the value they offer.

This is great news about the PSP. Hopefully this will reignite developers interest in the portable system, and we will get even better yet games for it.

Those numbers show just how irrelevant Japan has become in relationship to the rest of the world. At least in terms of video games.

Wow! Just wow!

I disagreed with you. I agree that things are different from previous generations but to call Japan irrelevant compared to the rest of the world as far as video games are concerned. I'd say you're wrong and on a MASSIVE scale.

Isn't Monster Hunter Japanese? Isn't Street Fighter Japanese? Isn't Metal Gear solid 4 Japanese? They may be to you but just the 3 titles above are anything but irrelevant.

That's the Final Fantasy name at work. Imagine when Final Fantasy XIII comes out for PS3. It'll be insane. And if they decide to make a FF7 remake, ya might as well stick a fork in it.

And I just sold my PSP to my friend.

I played a lot of Crisis Core and GOW:Chains of Olympus.

To be honest with you...I just need money for another PS3. My brother and I share the 20 gig we have now. I'm going to get the MGS4 one when it releases though.

18 - I think the new design is half the reason sells are so good
I just bought the white PSP and it's definitely feels alot lighter. Now the PSP feels like a mobile gaming device. At first when I got the fat it felt very fragile because of it's weight. I think sony has been making some good moves lately. I think they really need to keep games like PATAPON coming. Games that are different that what the PS2 offers. But I'm enjoying the PSP now especially since I can now buy 8GB memory sticks for $70.

One of my best gaming experiences this year was on the PSP. Truly Wipeout Pulse is a game to marvel at, pretty much as perfect as the formula can get on a handheld. It has been overshadowed by GoW and Crisis Core but it really is a game that every PSP owner should buy (maybe then the multi-player servers will be as busy as they deserve to be).

21 - PSP...?
nothing special here, the psp has a new color and MH was release. I'm sure Sony isn't as impressed as you guys are(they were expecting the same results or maybe a bit more). On an entire system that series is the only game that has legs and what about the rest of the 3rd parties that their games don't sell? The brand of MH is fairly popular over there and can push systems, I personally don't like part 1 but we have our own taste. Even when Capcom releases it on the Wii, it will still push systems. Will I get it... depends on how it plays, I'll wait for Famitsu's review.

What bothers me is the fact that the PSP was selling for a while but if you ever pay attention to the weekly Japaneses charts you might see 1 or 2 psp games on the top 50. that isn't because the games are crap, it's because it's the portable movie player,mp3,home brew etc.

In the top 50, the DS normally accounts for 70% of the charts. Many believe it has reached saturation, everyone and their grandparent own one but that's not true yet. FYI to the people that believe it's the parent that are buying the DS just to shut their kids up, that is incorrect. Nintendo has stated that a majority of owners are middle class women. Did you see the "game" that basically is a yoga helper..omg!They are weird over there.I own a DS and I'm well over 30, I like it and my gf plays it more than me, I play PC games more and smash brothers. I will have to get an X360 or ps3 for Street Fighter 4, But Jesus I can't stand X360's controller for SF...HATE IT!

Hardcore gamers this is for them... one last major release for the DS.And after this it will be clear that the DS own Japan.

DQ IX !

I think Monster Hunter (MH) was the psp's last major release, Kingdom hearts is nowhere close to the level of MH. So that was the PSP's last gun, now we wait for the impending doom of Dragon Quest IX.

Now we can move forward and wait for the next Gen portables yay!
