PSP… Potential thats ready to explode

Since reading the news that PSP sales have increased 85%, Sev1512 started to do a lot of thinking about the Sony PSP… Here are some things everyone should be thinking about, and may just tip the scales toward you making that purchase of a new shiny PSP.

The PSP was ahead of its time, and is coming into a renaissance.

The PSP has proven to be a different beast than the DS. The DS, like the Wii, is geared mostly to casual gamers, who like the pick up and play quick type games. That is what has made the DS shine. While the PSP has recently started to shine in the wake of very deep, time intensive games more on scale with the PS2 games of the past, while dropping the push for casual games.

This all started with the recent major hits being released such as Monster Hunter 2, FF Tactics, Patapon, GOW, and Crisis Core. There was only few titles as deep and as epic as those games the first 3 years, and all of those hits have been in the last 3-6 months.

it is going to explode, it all comes down to a huge price drop that can equate to the DS's price.

1.1 - well... yes price is important
many people r not ready to spend money on psp because it cost about ps2.
its for sure worth the price and i am keep thinking if i should buy one or not, but the lack of games and high price stopped me, well... the games r coming now, with god of war, final fantasy 7 CC, metal gear solid, killzone, jak and burnout etc, i say there is plenty of game to play on it now, but i want more JRPG's!!
so for me am waiting till a price drop!

so i'm starting to understand that half of this site's submissions are of some dude blog with something to say. Is there a way to filter this at all. I'm getting tired of opinions pieces. other titles that would work for this site..

O4G "opinion for gamers"
E4G "editorials for gamers"

I'm not dissing the PsP, i'm loving mine in all the right ways and sure, it still has legs. But these opinion pieces submitted as news pieces is rather boring.

I bought one about the same time it launched... and sold it 6 months later because of no games. Years later... there are some great games. I might have to pick one up again when it gets cheap.

Dont click on the story then.
Dont comment on the story then.

You dont like reading opinions yet you come on here and post your opinion about not liking to read opinions.

Just because its a blog doesnt mean it isnt an article. I wrote the article to spark some conversation and even more interest in the PSP.

It some how got to one of the hottest stories this week, which even I cant understand since it is only my OPINION.

But hey since it got so hot, I guess people enjoyed reading my opinion, so that leads me to believe that people (just not you) are interested in hearing OPINIONS.

Funny part is, I really think people just liked the explosion picture and clicked on it.... LOL

3 - What price?
What price do you think is the sweet spot for the PSP to really take off?
Do you think it has to be $99.99 or will $129 suffice? Just wondering how much everyone thinks the price should be for it to "explode"?

i mean think about it, when the PSP was revealed for the First time, people know it was going to be the strongest handheld in terms of hardware at the time, but it was too expensive especially for the package that sony released with a 32mb memory stick and headphones and strap. the games where lacking at the time as well, compare the PSP games that launch till today, big difference, if the games that came out so far this were were to launch with the PSP in the first place, it would of been in a different situation, possibly competing with the DS, toe to toe, if the console had a massive price drop now, it would of been dominating the handheld market. but its not they now have to be trailing unless they drop the price. its all there, the games are there. the hardware is there, heck even the battery life as well, lol. a price drop at around 130-150 with at least a 4gb memory stick on board (which i think should of been packaged instead of a 2gb/1gb memory stick) then people who were thinking to opt in to a DS will turn heads towards the PSP. i mean just look at all the high points of the PSP, especially the one thing that going to help it sell even more in the Future, the ability to rip your BD movies legaly to the PSP via the PS3. thats win win, not to mention a lot of console to handheld interaction.

Following some basic market rules and considering that sony already recovered the psp initial budget, $$130 can be possible guess.

Well Sony has done a great job with reducing the size of the cell, and Blu-Ray drives. So I believe that a "slim" PS3 is possible now, but Sony is just now really starting to pick up steam with the PS3. Releasing a "slim" model too soon would just alienate the existing PS3 owners.
Plus releasing "slim" models has always come around a time, when sales start to slow, using the new slimmer look, to re-ignite sales. This was the case with both the PS2, and the PSP.

The PS3 hasnt reached that point yet.

I just picked up a silver PSP slim....and I bought daxter, all the crash bandicoot PSOne titles, and socom FTB 2, along with Twisted Metal 2...and I crammed the rest of the space with a bunch of my favorite songs.

Needless to say...I really am liking this handheld, and I am loving the inter-connectivity with the PS3. The remote play I don't really like because of the lag that's involved, but the whole remote music control thing that was added in 2.20 was neat.

Anyways....I'm looking forward to the point when I can just use my PSP as a remote for the PS3 in general...to control movies, music, photos...all that.

I'm also thinking that there should be little to no lag if you connect directly through your home network....why there is still lag even then is a mystery to me.

7 - Really excited about getting one!
What sways me to any system is the games. Certainly Crisis Core is something I just can't leave alone as a massive fan of Final Fantasy 7, but the more i've looked into things the more games i've seen that i've liked to play. The price point for most of them online makes this somewhat of a no brainer too.

Likewise the amount of options for keeping myself occupied on long journeys with the movies and just plain filling the memory card up has me very intrigued indeed.

My only bugbear is that here in England we only have the choice of Black or White within colours (would love a silver one) - and that a lot of the bundles in the US just aren't over here.

Would you recommend getting a 4gb or 8gb memory stick? I've heard there could be slowdown with an 8gb?

Any essential accessories you would recommend?

4GB is plenty....I have 5 full games on a 2GB stick plus about 60 songs....enough for me.

Import a silver one if you have to....it's great, and it doesn't show dirt or fingerprints (unless the prints are on the screen, of course).

The silver one is indeed nice. I like it a lot more than the 1st fat PSP black I had a while back.

EDIT**

Oh, and buy screen protection film for the PSP's screen, as it scratches and blemishes easily.

EDIT 2**

Also, after the 5 full games and 60 songs on my 2GB stick, I still have....let's see here....about....225MB left.

"What price do you think is the sweet spot for the PSP to really take off?"

If it's such as good system then the price wouldn't matter, but since it's not selling like the ps3 they have to drop it just for people to notice something the ds can do right out of the box.

Jeanne d'Arc, GoW, FF Tactics, R&C, Patapon...I could go on, but there are plenty of good games in practically any genre. Don't forget it plays all the PS1 games on the PSN/PC Playstation Store and remote play of PJ Monsters. I read earlier that BC Rearmed will be remote play enabled as well. There are other remote play games, but I don't remember which off-hand.

I'm playing MGS: Portable Ops right now, and it's a great game. The graphics are just about on par with MGS3. Almost.

GOW: CoO and Patapon are two must-have titles for PSP. I treat my PSP just like I would any other console, even though it's just a handheld.

Best handheld ever.

I really do hope the PSP takes off. I won mine, so I can't complain about the price. Mostly I use mine for internet radio because there aren't many games that I like. When I do play games it is usually compilations of old-school arcade games.

21 - question about analog stick
I've been on the fence for a long time about the psp, but I just hate that it doesnt have 2 analog sticks, not even the new slim one. How is it playing with just one? Plus, are the loading times still insane?
Shut this user up Let user speak
Skerj - 591 days 5 hours ago
21.1 -
Loading times were always dependent on the game for PSP, with some having none or just one and others being really really horrible. Right now though pretty much all devs who develop on it has a good knowledge of the system so they're not bad if any at all. God of War loads only once to get you in the game, after that it's constant streaming, Daxter did the same thing (both by Ready at Dawn).

As far as the second analog stick, I know a lot of people want one as I used to be one of them. Until one day I put my thumb where theoretically the second analog would be placed and it was VERY uncomfortable. Unless they put the second analog stick inside the face button cluster or something, I don't see myself warming up to it. The games work fine without it right now.

Hah see, after a Sony system gets a Metal Gear Solid and a new Final Fantasy they seem to take off. I'm glad the PSP is seeing this new renaissance. It's like after Sony unlocked the processor for the devs to use the full 333mhz it's become a new machine for some. So far GoW is the only game to take advantage of it IIRC, can't wait to see what they come out with now. Crisis Core is already an outstanding game built for the prior processor limit, I wonder what it would have been like with the full 333.
