God of War PSP: Really, Really Short

Here's Game|Life editor Chris Kohler's God of War: Chains of Olympus clear time. (You can view the full screenshot at Game|Life.) You can add on roughly another half an hour to this, as Chris played the first half of the game on a preview disc and then had to start again on the review code.

But even then, Chains of Olympus is still really short at just under five hours. Chris would be a little more forgiving of this if the game was jam-packed full of holy-shit moments like previous God of War games, but it just isn't.

Chris Kohler, the guy who wrote this, is a miserable person who despises Sony. He regularly is found trolling PS3 threads on various forums on the Net.

Does that change the fact that the game is less than 5 hours long?

Just look at the metacritic rating... 11 reviews, all above *90* with an average of *94*. if the game length is an issue...i.e., if it wasn't suitably balanced with holy sh!t moments, than the game would be scored down.

Look at Heavenly Sword. There were some lovely things about that game, but the reviewers scored it way down because of its short playing time.

Whatever the length of this game, it is a must have title for the PSP. Plus this guy played it on normal, if you want a longer playtime just play it on hard.

I'll be picking it up at launch. If you play the game for 5 hours straight then it's too short, but I'll play it an hour a day on my lunch stretching it out to 5 days.

So? For a game on the PSP that looks that good, I think it's a fair trade off. Plus that's like what, 2 hours shorter than Call of Duty 4?

it is actually call of duty 4 was 7 second shorter...well for me at least. Considering that i beat that game on normal in 4 hours and 19 minutes.

Call of Duty has MULTIPLAYER. You get back your money worth on the multiplayer.

Does this 5-hour $40 game have multiplayer?

You know, if you go watch two movies (= 5 hours), you'll spend only half as much.

Yes, but the tradeoff I get by not playing multiplayer is not having to be online with pretentious d-bags like you... that's worth 5 hours and $40 to me anyway.

If you've played previous God of Wars, I can see the game being passed this quick on Hero...which is Normal/Baby mode difficulty, not hard at all. I'm saying that the game won't be short for newcomers and if you've played previous God of War games, you'll know what to expect when you try to beat it on Hard. 2 hits, game over, many retries, and not beating the game in 4 hours...so beating it on Hero in 4 hours is nothing to complain or brag about

Portal was 2 hours long and it's hailed as one of the greatest games ever made.

Quality, not quantity, people.

This is why World Of Warcraft is SH!TE.

Portal is ONE game in a huge package. You don't pay for Portal alone.

How much is the PSP game? $40 on Amazon?

$40 for 5 hours?

You know, a good 2-3 hour movie -- which I generally find to be a more enjoyable, entertaining experience than a game for the comparable time -- only costs $10.

Two good movies, which is about 5-6 hours, cost only $40.

That short little game on a tiny screen is asking for twice as much.

As a rational person would know $40 for a 5-hour game -- and no game can deliver an entertainment as enjoyable as a good movie for the same 2-3 hours -- is a ripoff.

Wrong.

Honestly man, I would rather pay 40$ for a 5 hour experience that I would play over again and enjoy, than eat sour grapes and piss/moan about why the world is such an evil place.

Also, who cares how much a game is as long as it creates memories? Steel Battalion was 200$ and I have some of the greatest memories from that game.

While I appreciate what Portal is doing and I am a fan of Valve games, I do feel that it's overrated. Plus, I loved Lair and finding others that use it as an example of a game that's better than Portal is rare. :)

Um no.

Look at the movie theaters. To take your wife/girlfriend to see a movie, your gonna drop at least $40.

For what? To have people talking on their cell phones, sticky floors, and chatty teenagers?

And you gotta pay for dinner too, if you think you are getting any.

$40 for 5 hours of GOW isnt that bad.

One of the best psp games I played and it looks like one that I would actually finish. Just from the demo I can tell it's just as epic as the console versions.

I mean you could rent it or buy it but for for people that don't want to play becuase they feel it's short, come on. It makes me wonder if some people actually own a psp or just hating.

well... it is a hand held game, not a console release. Not to even mention the limited disc space and details that went into GoW:CoO. I mean seriously, did anyone actually expect a 8-12 hour GoW title on PSP? imo this a very reasonable length for a PSP title considering its genre.I haven't got much use out of my PSP but it seems to me most of these games are considerably short compared to their console counterpart.

Anyway, who cares? It's a kick ass game and at the end of the day that's really all that matters.

& I'm going to have a kick ass time playing it omw to a RedWings game that weekend. Can't Wait!! My gf can drive, I'll play GoW!! @ least as much as I can. ;)

Too short. If it's second run, than it's OK. Without cutscenes and if u know puzzles, GoW and GoW were 5-6 hours long.

Like I care what one person thinks about God of War, since GoW for PS2, the game has been bad ass, even the miniature size of GoW will be kick ass game.

btw I plan to enjoy the game, and not see whether or not I can pass the game under 3 hours.

but really, how much can you expect out of a portable action game?

Comes with the territory I suppose. You can't just toss a moniker like GoW onto a platform and not expect some high expectations.

14 - Not saying the game is not good, but even the greatest game should not cost $40 for 5 hour of entertainment
How much is a PSP game? $40 on Amazon? So God of War: Chains of Olympics is asking for $40 for 5 hours of entertainment.

A good 2-3 hour movie -- which I generally find to be a much more enjoyable experience than any game for the comparable time spent -- costs only $10.

Put two good movies together, which are about 5-6 hours, cost only $20.

This little short game on a tiny screen is asking for twice as much.

Let's just be rational here. That's asking $40 for a 5-hour entertainment. No great game has yet to deliver the type of enjoyable experience a good movie can give me for the same 2-3 hours (e.g., The Lord of the Rings or The Terminator movies.) Even a moderately good movie delivers a better 2-hour experience than the best of games.

Of course, the true value of gaming is that it's cheap. You pay $40-$60, and you get 20, 30, 40 and more hours of entertainment out of it -- from multiplayer if the single-player isn't long enough.

Which means God of War: Chains of Olympic, which offers only 5 hour of entertainment that's not going to be as good as a movie, is a ripoff at that price.

It seems more like because it's Sony you guys are mindlessly supporting it.

Not the other way round.

$40 for 5 hour is just not a good value -- given that a game isn't as entertaining as a movie for the same 2-3 hours spent on playing/watching.

For that kind of money, I'd rather spend it on something that offers a better experience. It's just a much better experience. For example, go watch Spiderman-2 instead if you haven't already -- it's better value and better entertainment for 2-3 hours.

(Or just pick any current movie that has a B- rating or above at Yahoo! movie, and there's a lot of them -- they all provide much better entertainment than games for 2-3 hours.)

I disagree about the enjoyment that comes from movies. While I love watching movies, series like Resident Evil (particularly 4), Silent Hill , and Fatal Frame are far more intense experiences than watching a horror movie. When something jumps out of nowhere in a game, it can startle the bajeesus . In a movie, I MIGHT jump a little bit if it's in the theater and the movie is involving.

Also, Brothers in Arms gets me sucked into the war far more than watching a war movie does.

However, there are of course fantastic movies that have no parallel gamewise. (For example, Munich, No Country for Old Men, The Departed). But overall, a good game gives me more enjoyment than a good movie.

But, all in all, you are right. A 5 hour game should not cost $40. I'm glad I decided to spend my money that I can afford to spend on a PSP game on Patapon and picked up a CD to go along with it for the same money that GoW:CoO would have cost me.
