Folding@Home Gets Auto-Shutdown, Background Tunes
17
To co-incide with the release of PS3 firmware v2.10, Sony have announced an updated Folding@Home client, which you'll "soon" be able to download. The update brings two major changes: firstly, you can set a timer for the program, after which the PS3 can shut itself down. The other change is the addition of a background music feature, which draws its tracks from any you've got store on your HDD.

I will definetly be doing more folding now because of this. I like to listen to music till i sleep but dnt like to leave ps3 on all night i also like to fold but dnt want to fold all night either. This basically solves everything for me. Always wanted ps3 to have some sort of sleep timer and they have funny its in folding@home and not jst a console feature on its own but can't complain

except for my parents are paying for the electricity bill but they are becoming supsicious that the extra power consumption is coming from the ps3, so the autoshutdown feature can come in handy

The reason they are folding...its because they do not fully understand what these proteins do where how they bind exactly kinetically, dynamically, and pharmacologically..once they have that square out they can use it to make prediction of new biological models for disease and even create better synthetic drugs to act as "protein mimickers" to help fight cancer, alheizmers, ect.

I believe you join a group so that you collaborate on folding proteins and you don't waste time folding sequences(?) that have already been done.

5.2 - Groups...
No, each individuals get differents protein. Joining a group brings a few things.
1- You feel you're part of a small community.
2- If you fold a lot, it's easier to get into the top 50, 20 or 10 members of your group instead of trying to get to the top of the hundred of thousands folders.
3- Groups have forums, so if you have any questions about folding, they will gladly help you.
4- Quite often, some groups will organize "foldathons". Basically, everybody in the group is trying to fold on a certain day. You may win points that will give you icons and other freebies.
5- Somehow, I also think it's good because there's a competition between groups, so members may end up folding more because they don't other groups to do better than them.
All you have to do, is find a group you like, and enter the group number in the folding options.
Hint: group 54376 is 48 worldwide, and doing pretty good... : )

7 - PS3 folding
made Guiness World Records. This will encourage more. To haters: your jealous our PS3's can run at virtually unlimited times and heartless to understand the big picture. Go to a Ronald McDonald house where children fight cancer and see if you refuse to fold when you get home.

8 - This update is awesome....
No, for real. I can now fold while using my 42' Bravia to provide background music AND a cool picture for parties. This is really an awesome update. And then, I can stop folding and not be around to do so, which makes it so much more convenient to use. This update is a direct result of the requests of Folders. The rest of ya'll wouldn't understand.
1. Update 2.1
2. Warkhawk update
3. Eye of Judgment update....
All of it is happening this week!
Thank you, Sony for the Christmas gifts. Much love from 12.

9 - I have to concur
with drwan, by folding you are contributing to serve a great cause.. you are lashing out money everywhere on stuff that doesn't matter so 5 more bucks on your bill won't matter much.. think of it as charity, or think of it as a competition either way fold fold and fold
Plus now toshiba is moving the manufacturing of the ps3 gpus to 65 nm that also should save a lot of power on future ps3s so poeple can fold more... i hope they get to the ideallic 35 nm ships soon(next 2-3 years)

I am sure Nasa needs our help too ^_-.
This is just the start i think, think about PS 4,5,6,7,8,9,10. There is no reason to stop folding.
