PS3 Virtua Tennis 3 in 1080p

The "holy grail of full HD" is confirmed for Sega's PS3 tennis title. At its press event in Tokyo yesterday, Sega revealed, or rather boasted, that Virtua Tennis 3 runs in 1080p on the PS3. Displaying the game on slick HD sets with 1080p placards next to them, it looked absolutely glorious in high-res.

This makes Virtua Tennis 3 the second PS3 title confirmed to run in 1080p, next to Gran Turismo HD, and demonstrates that third party publishers are able to achieve what's been dubbed the holy grail of full HD on PS3. Sony has touted the PS3's ability to render 1080p images as a large benefit over the Xbox 360, which is incapable of generating them at such a resolution.

is on his way to tell us that there is no difference between 720p and 1080p. and xbox360 can do that (yet not a single game ever supported 1080p and no game is announced to support it)
also then he would tell u that resolution and graphics are not that important.

also there were some posts yesterday that said that ps3 may only be able to support tetris in 1080p, those people should put a shotgun in their a$$ and pull the trigger, so this kind of crap dont get to this site.

I can pick this one up. There are currently two games in 1080p, Gran Turismo HD and Virtua Tennis 3.

GT:HD- was basically the high laughing point of Sony's whole e3 '05, because it's only GTA4 running in 1080p, which probably took about 2 seconds of programming. "Max res = 1080p". Hey look, I just did it myself!

Virtua Tennis 3- When have Tennis games ever pushed a console's power? Two players, a flat court, and a ball. Man, that's crazy powerful!

If the PS3 were capable of outputting games in 1080p with no serious performance problems, ALL games in development would be doing 1080p. The lack of titles going for "the holy grail" is proof that it really does cause a hit to performance. Sony devs, feel free to prove me wrong here.

Just to restate:
-GT:HD WAS A NON-PLAYABLE DEMO THAT WAS ALMOST LAUGHED OUT OF E3!
-Virtua Tennis 3 IS A TENNIS GAME!

If Xbox 360 were the one outputting 1080p, all the Sony fans would be ripping it to shreds because of these titles. Sony fans, you need to see that this isn't about "M$ zombeez!!".

When Devil May Cry and Metal Gear Solid are running 1080p in 120fps like Kutaragi promised (remember?), then people will leave Sony alone. When ONLY two games are the only ones doing 1080p though, and they're not even particularly strong games, expect to take flak.

I understand that Sony (or associated developers) obviously isn't going to release images of what their games look like on "regular" televisions, but I for one find this to be the most important aspect of the console.

I understand that the standard forum argument tends to be "Who the hell buys a next generation system to play on a regular television", but the fact is that 90%+ of all consumers have regular televisions...

As many 360 owners know, these games don't look quite as stellar on standard definition televisions...so I think the _real_ key for Sony is not how they display 1080p, but how the games look on a Walmart $300 television. If there is substantial quality loss, then those are the screens consumers will judge the sytem by (and vice versa).

Same with Dead Rising eh. Sure the games support all the resolutions but the lower res TVs look horrible. I have an HDTV so no problem here, Dead rising looks beautiful but devs need to think about standard tvs aswell.

Let's compare it with the past then.

How long did we have PAL and NTSC? for 3 years and then upgrade? No.

HD LCD's are flying off the shelves right now. That is 720p native screens. Do you really think those people will upgrade to 1080p native screens in 3 years? No.

Why would one save to buy a 1080p native one when they have a 720p one? For real, how much does the improvement actually gets? Between PAL/NTSC and HDTV 720p the improvement is big, but above that marginally.

And what about TV footage, all in 720p native. And the price? The 1080p models are around 4000 dollars, the 720p are between 700 and 1100 for a good one. Even if 1080p models get cheaper, the 720p will be cheaper also. 1080p gets 2000 dollar, 720p will cost 350 to 600. What you'd think people do.

Right you're living in a dream. Even almost all PS3 games are and will be in 720p. Things don't change that fast in 3 years.

CD's were there for longer before DVD came. DVD has been here for a longer life cycle then 3 years, widescreen TV's needed a long time also before they sold to masses. 1080p will be for nerds and a very, very small percentage of people the coming 5 years

But in a couple of years who knows how many people will have 1080p tvs? 3 years ago, nobody I knew had hd tvs. Right now my family's only got a 720p tv, but next summer I'm saving up to buy a 1080p bigscreen(this summer I saved up to buy a wii and a ps3 lol).

Funny how you've gone from "PS3 will never support 1080p in games!" to "We only need 720p!". :-)

But ofcourse you are somewhat misinformed yet again.

Most LCDs today support 1080i signals AND have a native panel resolution higher than 720p namely the resolution of 1366x768. So that is 768 lines -- not 720 lines as in 720p. Now 1080i will, according to experts from EBU (European Broadcasting Union -- the guys who more or less decides the TV-standard for Europe), optically/visually in a scene with loads of action approximate to a 760-780 line resolution (slow moving scenes will have a higher optical resolution).

To match the native resolution of flatpanels 720p software has to be upscaled, which anybody with a bit of Photoshop knowledge can tell you is not a good thing.

That is why most if not all people will find the resolution of 1080i scenes look superior on their 768 line LCD compared to 720p scenes, both because they don't have to be upscaled, but also because the optical resolution matches the native resolution of the panel. And even moreso for 25-30 fps software like movies (24fps) and (a bit disappointingly) most initial games for the next-gen consoles, since 1080i then in practice is just about the same as 1080p.

So 1080i or even 1080p is vastly superior for almost all owners of LCDs today and in the coming years where 1080p flatscreens will become the norm, it will be even more superior.

dude, this is all irrelevant to the point. Microsoft (and no one else) claimed that 1080 was virtually useless because it wouldn't be fully realized until next-gen. here you have two PS3 games proving them wrong. no matter the circumstances that these games are running at 1080p the fact remains that they are, and that is something that the 360 simply will not be able to do. and since the 360 can't do 1080p, Microsoft wants to go on some crusade saying how it isn't important to gaming, when in fact it is. just because they are Microsoft doesn't mean that you should listen to everything they say. this very article should be proof and case-in-point of that.

Play the ps3 version of virtua tennis on 1080p on a 1080p television and then you play the 360's 1080i version developed by a different set of devs, on the same 1080p television, you will see that there is little to no difference in the final versions. 1080i games upscaled on a 1080p TV is identical to the human eye. Its the same amount of lines being displayed. Its just one is interlaced but when de interlaced on a 1080p tv...its then being shown in full 1080p. How do I know this? I have a 1080p tv and when I play games on my 360 that are native 1080i...it looks excellent. Now, keep in mind...Less than 5% of consumers have an HD tv. How many of those people are gamers is unknown. And how many of those people have 1080p tv's is obviously a very small amount. So for anyone to brag about 1080p is silly. Its not going to be a factor for the next 4 ot 6 years. So keep in mind its not the signal that matters as much as it is the TV. Folks...if you buy a 1080p tv. You will be getting the best picture possible whether you have a signal in native 1080p or 1080i. Proof of that is the HD dvd players picture quality far superior right now to Blu ray. Its all in the TV folks. From brand to brand to 720p to 1080i to 1080p. Its the Televsions that most don't own that matters.

19.1 - HDMI, DVI and HDCP explained (simplified)

HDMI and DVI are basicly the same -- a pure digital signal cable (where Component is analogue). The difference being that HDMI has the audio included in the cable (one less cable) where DVI has not. HDMI is the cable of the future for AV equipment.

The difference in visual quality between HDMI/DVI and Component is theoretically big, but most often neglible if at all existent. Not because of the cabling, but because of the imageprocessors in the TVs of today, which often degrade the signal more than the cabling. Both HDMI, DVI and Component are theoretically capable of all HD-resolutions (720p, 1080i, 1080p), but the TV-sets differ in which formats they can receive through which connections. TV-sets accepting a full Component 1080p signal are a rarity, because of the added analogue to digital conversion and therefore being more demanding on the TVs imageprocessors.

HDCP is the copyprotection required by among others the content owners (moviestudios) and is only possible on a digital connection. It makes it possible to keep the signal encrypted all the way from the source (broadcaster/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray disc) to the screen, making it very very difficult to copy. Moviestudios has the option to use the ICT (Image Constraint Token) to downsample the image, if it cannot be transmitted using HDCP. However, most if not all contentholders recognize that few people have HDCP capable TV-sets and some of the supposedly HDCP capable equipment doesn't fully support the specification giving owners of early equipment all sorts of difficulties (no picture, missing sound and that sort). Therefore they've unofficially decided not to enable ICT before 2013 or 2010 at the earliest.

So to sum it up: HDMI is great to have for the cabling and to be futuresafe, but far from necessary today -- Component will do just fine.

On the other hand, if you've got that gorgeous brandnew 1080p flatscreen, go for HDMI.

1080p is great if you have around C$5000 to spend on a massive tv. For those of us who think 45 inchs for a tv is big enough, it is time to listen to the experts. cnet - Sharp's new 1080p 45 inch LCD TV isn't big enough to take advantage of 1080p. cnet in regards to the difference between 1080i/720p and 1080p "But I defy you to distinguish the two on a smaller set like the Sharp 45-inch LCD from 10 feet away." My question to the people arguing that 1080p is the holy grail is - are you going to be owning a 50+ inch 1080p tv in the next few years and if not then why bother arguing about it? It just turns a post into a "my ps3 graphics will be better than your xbox 360 graphics" and vice versa.

Sweet. In the next few years the new games will look better and better. 720p/i and 1080p/i are not that big of a difference in the first place. I own a projector or a beamer and the difference really is not that noticeable. Really some games look better in 720 over 1080. So I think as long as developers play it smart we should all be in for some awesome looking games.

26 - Well graphics is a very important argument right now.

Sony said "The PS3 is significantly more powerful than the 360." Microsoft said "no way, you're lying."

Sony said "The PS3 can do 1080p for games." And Microsoft responded with "no way, that's impossible. Your system isn't significantly more powerful than our's, so there's no way it can do 1080p."

And thus Microsoft defenders claimed that what Microsoft said was true. And every time Sony's statements became supported and factual, Microsoft defenders have tried to shoot them down. It's a long process that's been going on for over a year, and it's going to continue forever.

As soon as GT:HD was announced as running in 1080p, thus overruling Microsoft statements that since the 360 couldn't do it that it was impossible, Microsoft defenders said "oh, well that's just a PS2 port. It doesn't count."

Then WarDevil came along and they said "That's just cutscenes. It doesn't count."

And now Virtua Tennis is doing 1080p during full-on gameplay and they say "Well, there's not that much going on. It doesn't count."

See a hilarious pattern? You can even see some people claiming that there's no difference between 1080i and 1080p (which is horribly wrong, as any video tech person can tell you). And others even go so far as to say "Well, there's not that much difference between 720 and 1080. Some things look better in 720, and some things look better in 1080." If that didn't make sense to you, you're ahead of the game. To say that video feeds look better at half the resolution of 1080p (i.e. 720p) is simply flawed logic.

The next logical step that they'll choose once 1080p starts showing up in more and more PS3 titles (MGS4 and Resistance are aiming for it), they'll simply state "The 360 is capable of those kinds of graphics. You just have better development teams. It says nothing about hardware."

Yes it sounds stupid, but you will see this more often. I've already seen it a few times over the past two months, and it's the next in a series of copouts. This will force some of them to see the light and actually become reasonable, while others are obviously stubborn to the end and will say "Well, it doesn't matter if the PS3 is twice as powerful. Games are what matters." Notice that this statement fails to acknowledge that system power is directly used to create games.

The most we can do is refute misinformation and fud spread by stubborn defenders by showing what PS3 titles are actually doing. And the people who have enough sense will look past the rhetoric and see that PS3 really does offer more power, functionality, and value than its competitors.

The 360 actually has higher bandwidth than the ps3 does between the gpu and cpu.

For years we PC gamers have been waiting for affordable 1600x1200 gaming and we are just starting to see it.

Why? because any true hardcore PC gamer will tell you that there is a significant difference in picture quality when you jump from 1280x1024 to 1600x1200. That said, most PC games still have not achieved playable WUXGA (1900x1200). The fact that a $500-$600 machine can play any game at 1080p (1900x1080 resolution) is truly remarkable. Lets hope Lair and Resistance get the graphic boots as well.

I just bought a new Mitsubishi 57" DLP 1080p for $2500

If anybody is paying $4000 for 1080p your paying to
much. This TV upconverts any signal to 1080p. My HD satellite, my buddy's xbox 360, heck even my old DVD player never looked better.

So if a game is displayed in 1080p does that mean it has better graphics or just better clarity? Couldn't you display a game like Pac Man in 1080p and if so would that mean it has better graphics then Heavenly Sword in 720p?
