Gamespot Readers Push Back

Apparently gamers aren't very pleased with Gamespot's removal of Editorial Director Jeff Gerstmann.

From the article: "According to a forum thread on their site, more than 400 of Gamespot's paid subscribers have already cancelled their subscriptions in direct protest of the move, with many more vowing to do so if Gamespot and parent company CNET do not answer up to the fairly heavy charges of putting advertising dollars ahead of editorial integrity."

OMG, Gamespot just lost a whole $16,000 (vs hundreds of thousands from sponsers) /sarcasm

IMO, Gamespot users are the worst. They're generally immature and uninformed as hell. Once this situation fades away (in about 3-4 weeks), the subscribers will come back like dumb sheep. Gamespot users are dense like that.

But seriously, only an idiot would pay for a site where most of the stuff is free. I doubt CNET is stressing over this because most of their revenue comes from ads.

Gamespot is a better place without Jeff Gerstmann. Bring in the new, better blood.

He might get this review right but how about all the other ones?? Do we know that he got bribed for other games that he reviewed? Gamespot review no longer have any credibility..I dont support anyone working at gamespot... Jeff is not the only reason why they pulling out..Its the fact that their accepting money to give high scores. Its really shameful that all this need to happen and now we will be caution about other reviews out there for game from now on..

man, its still only speculation. we dont know for sure what happened. i hate gamespot just as much as a bunch of other ppl, but we are on a witch hunt that i dont see justified yet. i do hope their protest and cancellation brings the truth out so i can hate the truth, not the speculation.

Gamespot has been being biased and stupid for a long time. Having the wrong people review games and just bad journalism.... maybe not bad but imho unenjoyable compared to others.

This is a good thing in that it will be a sign to the game industry. We the gamers wont take this crap. We are just as powerful as the big wigs in the industry and they know by now that we can make a statement if we like.

Jeff was fired for being unprofessional.
For example saying that the characters are ugly and unlikable without saying why. It's like if I was paid to tell you what's wrong with products and I just said it sucks. Thats it.
Also complaining about language in a game based on criminals? That'd be like saying "The usual suspects" is a bad movie because their is so much swears!
Jeff isn't a hero or honest he just sucks at his job.

13.1 - oh please

i watched that review, and there was nothing at all unprofessional about it.
He concisely explains that you can't even like the protagonist in a "cool anti-hero" way. He goes on to say this was because the writing was lazy and uninspired.
The reason why his personal opinion on characters is very very important for this specific review, is because of kane and lynch is supposed to be a very story driven game.
MAny film reviewers cite "unlikable" characters as being a reason they didnt like the film. With a game its interactive, so you could blot the charactes out. But then If you watch the video he goes in detail about why the gameplay also flops. "unprofessional?" please.

Compared to IGN's and Gametrailer's video reviews, Jeff's video reviews are VERY unprofessional. He shows up with a t-shirt and a damn pot belly burbing out the f-bomb (watch the Kane and Lynch video review on youtube; he says the f-bomb, it had to be edited out later).

Jeff's Gamespot video reviews can't stand up against and are very unprofessional when put side-by-side vs. the 'competition's' (IGN and Gametrailers) video reviews.

This whole ordeal just comes to the conclusion that some reviewers are sometimes put into a position in which they are obligated to give high scores to games that they really don't feel that they deserve it. That is why I don't trust reviews. It's not because of the reviewer, but from the site itself that might pressure them at times to give high scores because of there own personal benefits.

Some are honest, some are bought, who knows who are telling there real opinons nowadays...

What was other "event"? I left GS community about 1.5 years ago and never returned so I'm unaware of many later inside events.
As for GS subscribers, none of my friends was. Only one of them is IGN insider and the rest like myself don't pay for Game sites.

If true and GS subscribers / GameSpotters really start leaving GS, their problems will go beyond repair (Even though their image has already been fully tarnished and the crediblity of their reviews is out of the window.)

24 - Regardless of how you feel about the guy.....

He shouldn't have been fired for giving his honest opinion. That's what reviewers are supposed to do. Give their "own" opinion. Which in turn we are to believe that they are unbiased and not judged on things such as money. It taints the whole process. Obviously we can see that money wasn't an influence when Jeff was reviewing a game. That is good to know! His bosses on the other hand, now thats a different story!

We are going to get a ton of "PR" spin on this situation. But I think we all know what really happened here and its very very very concerning IMO.

I'm glad to see people making a statement on this issue. Even though its not that much money in terms of what Cnet brings in on sponsors, it shows that the community doesn't believe their explanation one bit.
