GameSpot video review of Kane & Lynch (that got the reviewer fired?)

GameSpot's (former) editorial director Jeff Gerstmann was allegedly fired due to advertiser displeasure at his "tone" in this review of Eidos' Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. A visit to GameSpot shows that the game has taken over the site very prominently, with backgrounds and multiple banner ads all pitching the game. Allegedly, publisher Eidos "took issue with the review and threatened to pull its ad campaign."

This video review seems to have been pulled by GameSpot and nowhere to be found at its website. It has not been previously posted on N4G.

I agree with the main ideas, but the way he expressed his review is very unprofessional (childish).. and for that I believe he deserves to be fired. However, if Gamespot considers professionalism as a standard for reviewing, firing and hiring then I don't think there will be any one left at that site..

While I kinda agree with graphics, I believe he is plain wrong about story and characters. Lynch is a crazy lunatic but also a funny and awesome guy and the whole thing is really fun. The Fragile Alliance is also really great.

every1 with clear eye vision knows the Graphics are not NG but the gameplay is something new and hard to get used to and that is why he did not liked it at most part. he does not have skills at all to play any games. have you seen the video where he was playing tekken online, he die then said the game was not all that great. and he sure not the right person to named some1 or something ugly.

4 - As far as I can tell, he's a bit harsh and could've been a bit more subtle here and there, but he's right.

And if all this is true, Eidos shot themselves in the foot with this "stunt" of theirs.

Unless they can prove that the reviewer has an agenda against them or the game, which is quite difficult to say the least, because he's just expressing his personal opinion.

That said, I can understand if Eidos is pissed, because of all the advertising/sponsoring on Gamespot. I think that just shows that you can't sponsor review sites that review your own games.

It's like me telling my boss that his kid sucks at playing basketball when he asks me. Sure, it's my own opinion and I could be completely correct, but it causes awkward situations nonetheless. ;)

I know a LOT of people that troll this site hate Gamespot. I find myself agreeing with them nearly 100% of the time.

If this is true someone got fired for a bad review it does add weight to the conspiracy theories people have with Console Makers paying off sites for review scores.

Absolutely shocking, being sucked for doing an 'unkind review' - He's a reviewer and it is his own opinion of the game (can't say that for a lot of reviewers).

So should his boss have taken him to the side and said 'hey be nice and make sure you give it atleast an 8 cos they're givin us wads of cash'

Seemed like a reasonable review to me. Its not like he said "OMFG THIS GAME SUX DONT BUY EVER!!!!!!". What he said is, he didnt like the story, didnt find any of the characters engaging and the script was bad but the voice acting was OK. He didnt like how the game mechanics were executed but there were some good ideas the developers just didnt pull it off and it may be because they were lazy (not like players havent been saying that about certain gamemakers for a while). He said that he would not recommend the game at full price but maybe if you can take a look at it sometime when not paying full price you should.

I just dont see what anyone would find so bad about that review except for the developers are "lazy" comment. Which as I said gamers have been saying about certain developers since this gen started.

Jeff sounds like any other reviewer I've ever seen. He doesn't sound unprofessional at all. He does splash a few compliments about the game during his review, so he's obviously not being totally biased or negative. From what I've seen, it does seem like a rather mediocre game (I've not played it though). If he was fired for that review, then Gamespot is guilty of bowing to the almighty dollar and to Eidos.

Have not played the game so can’t comment on that aspect (though it seems pretty cool to me)

I think this clearly demonstrates what’s wrong with the media.
How can you have free press when companies finance add campaigns on a site that is supposed to give an honest and unbiased review about the product being sponsored…

Now I often find my self completely disagreeing with the reviews on gamespot just look up the review of Scratches (which is a great game).
But I think they should pull the adds and not fire the reviewer we are supposed to have free speech arn't we?

I never ever visit Gamespot but this reviewer is my new hero, an honest review of a game. Just show how little journalistic integrity many sites use for reviews if they fired him for being honest about an advertiser.

Surely we as a community can get this guy hired here as N4G's official no bullsh#t reviewer, I'll put 20 quid towards his salary, if everyone did it we would be well away.
