Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Gameplay

Kotaku: "Having had the pleasure of playing a fair amount of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune over the last couple of days I can tell you that it's quite a good time. Watching this video might lead you to believe that the whole game is shooting, but it's so much more. They seem to have taken the best bits from some great games and combined them together to create a really fun and entertaining gaming experience. Think Tomb Raider with some Gears of War thrown in, a little Prince of Persia for good measure and a storyline that will have you fondly reminiscing over Raiders of the Lost Ark. Those feelings, as do the gears of War and Tomb Raider ones, go away very quicly... Trust me. Even mroe so about around chapter 13... do not, PLEASE!!!! Do not look at any spoilers for this game. Whatever you do. Let it hit you in the face like a two ton brick.

Gears of War is gorgeous, but in my opinion Uncharted has far more attention to detail. It features the most realistic characters I've ever seen in a game, the backgrounds are beautiful, and for the first time in the history of gaming, your clothes actually appear soaked and clingy when you climb out of water. Not only that but the jungle is alive with swaying branches, and tall grass that actually gets brushed aside when you walk through it.
Good looking and well textured games like Gears are becoming more and more common. It's the little details that make Uncharted stand head and shoulders above the rest.

It is the best looking game so far. The last 4 chapters have you literally scrapping carpet off your tongue, from all the time your jaw was on the floor. It's the best game I've played to date. An experience, not a game.

The game is slightly over 10 hours, 1st run thru on normal. You can't beat it any faster, if you're actually lookin' for even some of the relics. I don't know where people are gettin' off saying it's 5 and 6 hours long. That was GOW's length. Uncharted is a better looking game than GOW. It's more appeasing and appealing to the eye. It has tons of color and an atmosphere out of this world... Just wait until you get about chapter 12, folks. It really does change your persception of the game. It does... it's like walking into an EC comic come to life.

7 - Yeah this game is fun judging from the demo.

The gunplay is spot on. It feels very similar to Gears which is a good thing. It doesn't seem all that exciting when watching the videos, but when you actually play the game yourself it's very satisfying. The only thing I'm missing in the gunplay is the active reload like in Gears. It seems as an insignificant thing on first sight, but it's a very cool gameplay mechanic.

The platforming in this game is a nice break of the gunplay but it isn't anything out of this world. I would've liked to see some more platform intensive gameplay.

But as a whole, this game really seems like a great package. Fantastic visuals, tight and varied gameplay and a polish some developers can only dream of (yes, I'm refering to that certain developer!).

Too bad it's only 8 hours long, but I've made up my mind. I'm getting this game now that I put AC out of my mind.

I agree with you for the most part..

Now what you guys need to stop doing is comparing UNHARTED to GEARS..both are great games...yes..but they offer two different style of gameplay..yeah ..yeah the cover system is similar but GEARS copied killswitch ..so neither is orginal right there..

and Uncharted doesn't need active reload..remember know we are fighting humans in the game not aliens..what do you want one bullet kills..that's why they included head shots...

and the game isn't 8hrs Naughty Dog said it's a 10-12 hr game...remember that reviewers tend to rush play games to meet deadlines..probably the played it on easy who..knows...and there's alot of replay value packed in this game....so everyone should be happy..!!

7.2 - Actually...

I'm mearly comparing the gunplay aspect of the games. Which is very similar and even the developer stated they liked Gears and that was their motivation for the gunplay in Uncharted. Also, you immediately have to turn this into a fanboy fight, don't you?! Who cares who implemented this cover stuff first? I don't, I just refered to Gears because that's the only game I played that has very similar gunplay mechanics as Uncharted. I never played Killswitch so why would I refer to that game?!

Also, I don't understand why the active reload isn't needed just because you're fighting humans in this game. It's a cool gameplay mechanic so I don't see why not incude it?!

Oh, and the devs said it's 10-12 hours did they? Just like the developers of Gears said the game lasts for 10-15 hours. And how long did that game last, 5-6 hours?! Devs always add a few hours when they state the lenght of the game, it's common knowledge.

7.4 - No, you didn't disagree that it's similar to Gears.

But you did say that people should stop comparing the game to Gears, Which I did, and I mearly explained why I compared it to Gears and to point out that there's nothing wrong with comparing it to Gears for the reasons I mentioned above.

Also, saying things like: "but GEARS copied killswitch" out of the blue does come across as fanboy behaviour and provokes the typical pointless fanboy rants.

As for the active reload, If you leave out the bit where you gain extra damage on your bullets I think it's actually very realistic: When you screw up the timing, the gun jamms and you loose a couple of precious seconds there. Those seconds could be a matter of life and death. This actually perfectly fits the profile of 'your average Joe' that Nathan Drake is supposed to represent. So I don't see how that's unrealistic?

As for the game length, in my experience the reviewers are more often more accurate about the game length then what the devs state, so I'll go by what the reviewers say anyday. And to artificially enhance a games duration by playing the game on harder difficulties is not a good thing imo. I like to play games on the normal difficulty as does the average gamer out there to keep a nice pace going and not having to get frustrated over time. So I think the normal difficulty should be the balpark here.

That's my review of it... Alos, of merit.. Anyone who complains about the gunplay doesn't know what the games about. IT starts off loose and very unforgiving. As you progress it gets tighter and as you hit more achievments you get better and better. As I said in my review, Drake is a normal guy... Looking for a break. Trust me, you won't even know your aim is adjusting unless someone tells you, like I just did.

mesh1.. gears only had great graphics cause it only had 4-5 enemies or a boss on screen with hardly any colors. uncharted has big maps with lots of color and enemies on screen.

16 - Played the demo some more today

Anyway, I charged one of the enemies for some melee attacking, and because there was one of those short stone walls behind him, my character had him leaned backwards over the wall and slugged him. Amazing how much detail there is in this game. Most other titles would've had zero collision detection with the wall and the enemy would've just disappeared into it.

17 - Where are the....

10s!?? This game has taken elements from some games that have been greatly praised. Take Gears of War, a good game that i have played on a 40" Full HD LCD. Heres a slight comparison,

Gears of War vs Uncharted:

Graphics: Uncharted. could be denied by many, but thats the honest truth. yes i have 20/20 vision.
Story: Uncharted. While i didn't finish Gears. Some say the story was 'blah'. Uncharted has a great story (according to reviews).
Gameplay: Uncharted. Why? Gears has good gameplay, they might be even in gunplay (where the comparisons come in). But, the melee and just the animations in Uncharted easily gives it the advantage.
Guns: Gears. But yet i haven't seen all the weapons in Uncharted.
Action: Tie for now. The demo in Uncharted gave me a great impression of the amount of action that will be in the full game.
Replay: Gears has multiplayer. BUT Uncharted does have that "aw" feeling to it that'll make you come back for more even without the multiplayer. Plus it has unlockables.

The scores are Uncharted: 3.5 Gears: 2.5

Its honestly better than Gears BUT where the heck are the 10s?? Uncharted is more innovated than Gears but yet its not getting as many perfect scores as Gears. its amazing really that these damn review sites can't give out a 10 to a game thats more deserving (Uncharted) than a game like Halo 3. its a bunch of bullsh*t really. Maybe thats because its not on the 360?? Bunch of balony. YES I DO HAVE A 360, i'm just not BIASED like many of you little kids and these damn review sites.

17.1 - There are a lot more factors to take into account here.

For instance, you can't just look at the graphics and say Uncharted scores better in that department. Sure I agree, it looks better than Gears, but remember that Gears released over a year ago and that the visual standards weren't as high as they are now. It's about the impact it had at the time, and with Gears PERHAPS the impact was bigger than Uncharted now.

Also, it's all about FUN. You can't just put the different aspects of the games side by side like you did and come to the conclusion that one game is more fun than the other. You only know this after playing both games and the feeling you are left behind with afterwards. So maybe in general people still find Gears more fun, that can be.

Another thing is timing: Perhaps if Uncharted released last year and Gears this year, you would've seen the exact opposite of now where Gears is averaging just below 90% and Uncharted averages just under 95%. Timing is an important factor to consider as well as the impact depends on the standards that are set for that specific time.

And I personally think Uncharted will still get a few perfect scores and average above 90%, but if you think Uncharted is more fun than Gears, who cares about the average scoring on Gamerankings?!

Just ignore them, enjoy the game and don't bring up the pro-Xbox 360 conspiracies because there are none. Of that I'm convinced.

Graphics - Uncharted. Just been playing gow on pc, at higher rez then 720p and more fx. Its a great looking title,(if your on pc, don't turn off post processing or the game looks poor) Same as DIRT.

Gunplay, thats close, both have their moments.

Overall i'd just uncharted the nod, so far. Buts both are very good looking titles and both should be played if you can.

i love when the enemies are blindly shooting with machine guns.and when they run and jump over walls,slide,lay on the ground,it's just a killer game.

graphically,it can only be described as "uncharted."i have not seen so much detail.drake's animation when moving through doors on the sub,the flinches when being shot at,the skeedoo and the water........

boy o boy!!! and it's only in ps3's first year?can't wait to see what year 5 looks like.but until then,getaway and 8 days need to show themselves early next year for video.

this game is SERIOUS. it has everything that makes a great game and it shines like the sun. i've never had this much fun... ever and i'm only 30% through the game. eyecandy is amazing. music is amazing. voice acting is amazing. gameplay is amazing. this game is totally UNDER-RATED and deserves way more hype and high scores cause nothing will be able to touch a game like this in a long, long time. people just need to swallow their pride and sit down and play this game and enjoy the experience.
