That's awesome! Who'd have thought you'd be getting game demos off the extras menu of a movie. Who'd have thought the demos would be DMC4 and RE5!!!!!!! That's great :)
No, it WON'T

A profile 1.1 player needs to have 256mb of local memory to store bd-java on and a secondary video decoder so profile 1.0 players can't be updated to profile 1.1. Unfortunately, Blu-ray is not finalized until profile 2.0, which requires 1 gb of local memory and an ethernet port so no profile 1.0 or profile 1.1 players (presently available or in the near future) will be able to update to profile 2.0.
The ps3 has more than 1 gb of local memory and a network connection so it will be able to update to profile 1.1 and later to profile 2.0.

Yawn ... who the hell really wants PIP when watching a damn movie? We, or at least I, want to re-create a theater experience in the home. That's why I have a projector. If they started playing PIP in the theater, I'd climb the seats and strangle the projector operator, even though it isn't his fault!

It's a special feature option. If you never listened to director commentaries or watched storyboards from DVD special features then you probably won't watch the pip features but there are many people that are very interested in these features.

This doesn't go for all Blu-Ray 1.0 players. Since it isn't mandatory to have an ethernet port on Blu-Ray players many can't be updated and a software update can't compensate for the extra hardware needed for 1.1 discs

even though it is not mandatory most of them have it....they could also put the firmware upgrade in the BD disc, just look at the Resident Evil: Extinction movie... its coming with demos for the PS3..who knows what they could put in the disc...
and if im not mistaken you just need 256mb of memory for PiP..so basically all BD players can do it...

Even though that is true...
I think that manufactures would want to make sure all the hardware are updated, to avoid the hasle of people calling them all the time....
because some people would not even know that it has to be updated to do some funtions...
I would rather the idea of the BD update

10.6 - Not that easy
The changes, agreed by the Blu-ray Association, mean that from October 31 all players should include full support for Blu-ray Java, the language high definition players use to control all menus, navigation and special features such as picture-in-picture (PIP).
Some of today's models can be upgraded through firmware both others lack the 256MB non-volatile memory needed to store the full program.
Additionally, players with an internet connection must have 1GB of memory for storing and buffering online content. The Playstation 3, which can be used as a Blu-ray player, doesn't currently support all aspects of Blu-ray Java, but its large hard disk should make it easy to upgrade.
No Blu-ray movies currently have PIP features, HD DVDs have had mandatory PIP support.

256mb of local memory and a secondary video decoder is required. This is hardware that doesn't exist on any profile 1.0 players approved before Oct 30th. A firmware update cannot create 256mb of memory and a second video decoder.

All the blu-rays I have came with an insert inside saying if your player won't play all the features call some number. So I'd take it as if you call that they will send you an update disc in the mail.
Some players won't do PiP but all movies will still work in all players.

13 - What the hell?
This is a Blog site. The guy is just posting rubbish. The blogger doesn't even know proper grammar.
Now before you push that disagree txt button on me, get to work and send an e-mail to Sony support and flood them with one question. Will the PS3 get a firmware update for PIP?
I have been doing just that and I keep hitting walls. Don't you think if this was true then support would know that the PS3 will support the 1.1 spec and not give me a candid answer avoiding the question? I don't want any other details as far as release date, size, or any other confidential info. I just want reassurance that the player will support 1.1 in the future.
Here is my response from Sony...

Hi, I have case #5019075
Thanks for e-mailing me back. However my question was not answered. I would
like to know if the 40GB PS3 will get a firmware update to support Blu-ray
spec 1.1 (Picture in picture)? The new spec will be needed to use future
features added to Blu-ray disks that come out Q1 next year. I would also
like to know if the PS3 will support, via firmware update, Blu-ray
spec 2.0 which is the final version of Blu-ray.
