Hands-on PS3 Version of UT3: Lag Free Online Over PSN, Fair Sixaxis Controls

For the most part, UT3 for PS3 will feature the same campaign and much of the multiplayer experience that you'll get on PC. In fact, if you're inclined, you can synch up either a USB or Bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo and smite Sixaxis-wielding noobs with great efficiency. However, during the event, each kiosk was furnished with a controller. GameSpy's got to admit, it works fairly well.

Steering the Redeemer with Sixaxis should be fun but I still prefer M&K for UT. I've always played UT games with Mouse and Keyboard but this time my PC won't be able to handle this game so I have to go with the console versions.

No lag over online play with PSN. Awesome, can't wait for some online deathmatchs.

My friend is getting the PC version since his system can handle the graphics so maybe we could play only, I'm also a flak canon crazy :)

I'll definitly get UT3 for PC sometime when I upgrate my system because I HAVE to play UT on PC. Really sad that crossplatform didn't make it. But who knows? Maybe a future patch makes it possible.

Keyboard and Mouse in this game is the reason I got a PS3 instead of upgrading my PC. It was either spend €500 on a 60gb PS3 or probably €1500 on a new PC

If you can only get 1 of the following; Haze, UT3, CoD4, or Uncharted the choice should be pretty easy. UT3 simply because EVERY kill is satisfying! CoD4 and Haze are pretty much tied (and I know I'm going to loose bubbles for this) but Uncharted is just too slow in comparison to the other 3 to be a strong contender as an action game. Then again I mainly play FPS's so take that into consideration and you'll realize why UT3 is so high on my list (If you haven't played Unreal Liandri Conflict find an origanl xbox and play it, best Unreal ever!)

I have to admit, when I get the PS3 version I'll miss being able to go into the graphics options and hear the guy say "Holy Sh*t!" when you turn all the options up to their max, it's the little things that count!

5.2 - Can someone explain to me why PS3...

...network has no lag and Xbox Live does?

I'm in New Zealand (NZ) and when I play against anyone else in NZ or Australia (AUS) I experience no lag on Xbox Live. When I play against a host who's outside these countries (NZ,AUS) I experience some lag (depending on the time of day).

How will the Playstation network improve this at all as my signal would still need to go via our international connections between NZ and the rest of the world?

that's a tough one Close Second. I really don't think that PSN or Xbox Live has much to do with that but I could be wrong. Mainly depends on your internet source IMO. Certain ISP's have trouble communicating with one another, I'm in the States and have had no lag with my friend in Ireland but me and my buddy across the street can hardly play together because of his/my ISP.

8 - oh the Lag is Free on the PS3 on the 360 I had to pay $50 for lag lol just kidding!

I talked to My cousin the other Day and when I told him online was free for the PS3 and the Wii he was trying to figger out why he had to pay for live. I tried to help but I couldn't think of anything.

It's mainly for the friends list and having things like private chat and the like, plus if you compare the amount of free content over all three networks it becomes painfuly obvious which has by far the most. I mean you get free TV shows over live all the time (wether you pay or not for live) and that comes from those of us that do pay for the service. I've honestly payed $200 dollars for my 4 years on live and haven't regreted it in the least, then again I'm online every night (I generaly get on PSN during the day, PSP is the best online handheld bar non...)

Agreed. I've suffered lag on warhawk and I've got a good connection. You will always get a bit of lag, no matter how good your connection is. I've been playing pc online gaming since it started(doom on pc) and you always come across some lag here and there.

only game I have experienced lag in on the PSN was Vegas...its pretty obvious too how bad the online code for that game is...360 or PS3, both versions look like like absolute junk online...and look great in single player...

I ping Warhawk's dedicated servers at around 80ms...I only have a 3mb down DSL connection available in my area (or 3mb down cable...overpriced for the same speed)...and have never nocited any lag on my end at all, except for in vegas...we used to have a 360 with XBL hooked up to the same connection...and didn't really notice much for that either, again...except for Vegas...

XBL is only p2p...and a p2p environment will have latency issues at times more or less no matter what...Some PSN games are only p2p also (pretty much any 3rd part online game...everything 1st party has dedicated servers, except motorstorm)...which is 100% superior to p2p...imo that is a huge advantage of how Sony is running the PSN...but both MS and SCE have done a pretty good job, as well as the devs, of making p2p work with little lag most of the time...the main thing for it to work the best is how good the online game code is, and not allowing anything but broadband connections to the network...p2p wise XBL and PSN are very similar...but the PSN has far more games already that have 60+ dedicated servers...

10 - I hate lags

When I play Warhawk I haven't experienced any lags so far, that is why Warhawk is a perfect experience for me. I rented Formula One for the PS3 a month ago and that game has too many lags even for a Sony first party game, I just hope Gran Turismo 5 won't suffer that fate.

2 questions for you guys: Any lags for Forza 2 or PGR 4 on the 360? Any lags for COD4 on the PS3?

Perhaps in a few years lags will be a thing of the past.

Warhawk is awesome with its lag free self.Any game can be lag free online if they set it up right.One person told me they didn't experience any lag with the PS3 version of COD:4 but I haven't got to see for myself quite yet.

yeah both Warhawk and CoD 4 are two of the smoothest online games I have ever played...Resistance was/is very smooth as well, but even that has some bizarre death animation hiccups at times that simply don't look right (you kill a dude, and he falls over...but then stands back up for a second or two, only to fall over again...and then you get the kill points)...

CoD 4 is ridiculous considering how good it looks, how its only P2P, and how smooth it is...at first I thought I was lagging a bit because it was forcing me to "lead on" players when I was firing at them...a common thing that is needed with a lagging connection (despite the bullet projectile having no trajectory, you still had to lead them on because the oponent was farther along then he was being displayed on your screen)...I then realised though that CoD 4, like Warhawk, has trajectory timing on every shot fired...no cheap "rail gun" like bullets that are instantly across a map (probably my only real complaint with a few of resistance's weapons)...leading a player on in this sense is a lot more realistic...and truely impressive that all that information is crammed into the streamed code...

both games are awesome imo...can't wait to see what DLC comes to them...

Free lag free online = Win. To be honest though I've only experienced lag twice on PSN and that was playing someone from Romania in Tekken 5 DR, he lagged us all though and when he left the game returned to normal. I'm still picking this up for both PC and PS3, for the moddening, see you all online.

For finally providing the quality games that we were all looking for. Now I have to take some of the cash from my child's college fund to pay for these games! 18 - PS3 version almost lag free at the expense of being smaller in scale and 20% slower in game play vs the PC version.

It's a sacrifice that was worth it for PS3 players I'm sure, otherwise you wouldn't have gotten the game.

I wonder why it had to be slowed down 20% vs the PC version? Any excuses, I mean ideas?

18.2 - the reason for the 20% is

you try to play at the same speed with a controller then a game with a k/m . You can't ... your reactions and such with the controller can not be the same as with a k/m. They lowered the speed on the consoles to adjust for the controller.
