PS3UK Review: Folklore 6.5/10

RPGs are a common thing nowadays, but Folklore has taken basic RPG elements mixed them with a strange gothic background and is finally something different and original. Using the Genji: Days of the Blade engine at Game Reppublic Folklore has stunningly beautiful and unusual environments, but certainly isn't a graphics showcase of Playstation 3. Lots of people fell in love with Foklore after playing the demo when it exploded onto the Japanese Playstation Store, but does the love stay, or was the demo meerly a hump and dump?

I think it is expected to get mixed reviews for this kind of game. It is not the usual type of game which appeals to the majority of gamers.

Folklore could be put in the same genre as Blue Dragon for example, which also had mixed reviews.

As for poor reviews for PS3 exclusives generally, then I can't really say, as the exclusives I've played have been really good, and comparable to the best 360 games I've played. Resistance is better than Halo 3, Gears of War is better than resistance, Motorstorm is better than anything except Forza 2, GT Prologue is better than Forza 2, Super Stardust HD is better than Geometry Wars. I just picked up Eye of Judgement, and a few PSN Eye games, and they are great to play and a lot of fun, and there is nothing to touch those on the 360.

Thats is just my opinion and you may think different, but we could look at some really great 360 exclusives if you like. Anyone for a game of Yaris?

Your opinion of "what it deserves" isnt of much value in the face of the industry review average. Sure, its just your opinion. But this 6.5 is about right in with the rest...

I may have approved the story, but its a poorly written review.

I have this game myself, and both me and my wife have played and enjoyed it.
Its a niche game for sure, and certainly doesn't blow you away with its technical prowess. However, its really differnet to anything else out there, and has interesting game mechanics as well.
Rather than follow the formula and produce another 'me too' game, this is a good example of a game thats only going to appeal to small subset of the PS3's owners, but for many, it will be an enjoyable and refreshing experience. Its of no suprise then that I've seen scores from perfect 10's to 6's for this title, as it will certianly not appeal to all.
Its having a diverse selection of titles appealing to all sorts of tastes that has always made me enjoy Sony's previous machines, and I can see the trend continuing with the PS3 which has plenty of titles that can polarise opinions - this being one of them.
If you fancy a slow paced and quirky trip through a farie invested world, you could do a lot worse than give this title a try. If you live to frag, or are expecting an RPG along the lines of others or want something to blow away your friends - then this will disappoint, but dig a bit deeper and theres plenty to enjoy here.

I really enjoyed Folklore... I'm not a huge RPG guy, myself... but it offered me something most run of the mill RPG's didn't... It was different. I loved the game and the graphics and art directionw ere top notch. Let's put it this way... I actually was so interested in the game, I beat it. I can't say that for Final fantasy or any other run of the mill RPG. They're all the same. Folklore isn't and that's why some people bash it. Some love it. It's a catch 22 with this game. Try it out and see for yourself, folks. Don't listen to reviews.

6 - I couldn't get into Folklore

No offense, but I can't help but wonder if people like the game for what it is, or because of the art direction? I found enjoyment in Kameo, despite the lame characters, and this seems to be Kameo dressed up in Alice in wonderland clothing, with no platforming (or at least no emphasis on it). It's 2007 and I can't stand games that give me a fixed view rather than give me a camera to adjust my sights. This must be a Japan Studios thing as their launch game Genji suffered from the same problem.

I agree, it's not for everyone... I didn't even think it was for me, but I got it as a gift and thought I'd try it out. I'm glad I did. I also really, really, loved Genji 2. I think everything about it had quality written all over it. To this day you're hard pressed to find a "much" better looking next-gen game. It's beautiful to say the least

Folklore is AAA in my book and thats what matters to me.

Ratchet and Clank is the same as I love that type of game.

I played some AAA games and I hated them that I sold them so if its a game I enjoy every minute of its AAA to me.

Since when does metacritic designate which games qualify as AAA? The definition of a AAA title in any field (film, games, etc.) is something with a large budget. But beyond that, if you think a game is good, who cares what metacritic says? Also, WTF does this have to do with Folklore? You, sir, are a AAA idiot. Have fun with no bubbles.

This game is worth a little more than this. I have been playing it from release and whilst it is not the most original game is more than competent enough in the graphical and gameplay department. The story whilst not the most original keeps your interest throughout. As well there seems to be d/l content coming out very fast and whilst you may feel that maybe it should have been part of the game, but they seem to add something to the game beyond a novelty.

The only bad points I see in the game is the resident evil-esque collision detection on background objects and no multi-player (but this sorta game is normally single player anyway).

I would say this is a 8.0-8.5, not quite greatness, but worth a play non the less.

This is not the first time (nor will it be the last) that reviews have seemed a little harsh to the PS3. I am far from saying every game is perfect, but some of the criticism seems a little too picky for my liking. At one time I awaited a review before a purchase, now I make my own mind up without reading a review.

12.1 - Lex this is like the only Game I seem to be interested in

since I got the PS3 2 days ago. reminds me of Kingdom Hearts game play.

The game looks great, except I hate not having controls of CAMERAS.

I'm an avid RPG lover and Video Game Music junkie and I liked the Demo.

What I liked about the DEMO.

1. The way the story is narrated and how the cut-scene is done.
2. I like the Music Score, doesn't take much I can tell it's good.
3. Voice acting is quite good.

Anyhow I'm not going to read the reviews for this game, I'm thinking of getting it since my first impressions were good. I'll keep it that way.

PS3uk looks like it's basically one guy who registered a domain name and started his own game review website where he does all the reviews under different names. It's funny how desperate xbots are that they jump at the first closet Xbox-fanboy-pretending-to-be-a -PS3-fanboy-so-he-can-more-conv incingly-crap-on-PS3-games website.

Not only is this a proper review, but the entire site is filled with amateurish mistakes. He didnt even both to use a spell-checker! lol

All his web-sites combined bring in only 2500 hits per day. That's lame.
