Next-gen Mortal Kombat coming for PC as well as PS3 and Xbox 360?

Epic Games, the creators of the Unreal Engine 3 which Mortal Kombat series creator Ed Boon has stated the next game in the series will make use of, has add the tentatively titled "Mortal Kombat 8" to their upcoming games listing. According to this information, the game is being developed for Sony's Playstation 3 console as well as Microsoft's Xbox 360. However, the site also says the game is in development for the PC, a platform which the Mortal Kombat series has been absent from for a number of years. Many fans have requested a PC version of previous games to no avail, but it seems possible Midway may finally deliver.

I hope they announce MK8 for arcades as well. Nothing beats the old MK2 and MK3 arcade battles.

As for PC, only MK4 and MKTrilogy have come to PC before as far as I know (And maybe the terrible spin-offs like Special Forces) but it would be awesome to have a great fighting game on PC after decades.

6 - Mortal Kombat

used to be an awesome franchise. Part 2 was the best in the series. When they made part 3 Midway added the auto-combo system which ruined it. Although the run button was a cool feature.

Part 4 got even worse with the transition to 3-D on the Zeus arcade board. But the fighting engine was at least still intact even though it had the cheesy weapons and the horibble motion capture.

Everything after part 4 has been garbage. There is no more "core" fighting engine. And the stupid stances. Where you switch in bw them mid combo was just garbage. The fighting mechanics of the old MKs were based around sweeps, uppercuts, roundhouses, and air juggles, and even corner traps...esp with Kitana in MK2. The new fighting systems are complete garbage.

If Midway would make the new MK like part 1, or 2......it would sell. If they make it like the newer ones it will be garbage on the PC or anywhere else.

I probably wont buy this game. Call me stuck in my nostalgic ways but Mortal Kombat died out when 2D fighting games started to become obscure. Like Bloodmask said, Part 4 was in 3D but the old engine was still there.

Even though people say 2 is the best one, UltimateMK3 was my personal favorite. I still play this game on my 360 to this day. Just to let you know Bloodmask, MK 2 is pretty good online on PS3. Not to say it's a reason to buy one, but it's a damn good incentive if you ever do get it.

I'm a fan of 2D fighting games so I will give this game a chance because I'm a fan. But I'll more than likely shelve this game because the only 3D fighting games I play is VF and Tekken.

However if Midway ever decides to go back to their roots and make something of a psuedo 2D/3D hybrid, I'm there!!!

6.2 - Mk2 was the prototype of UMK3 and UMK3 is the best 2d MK game to date

MK2 is a very broken game which is why the game could never be played competitivly unlike UMK3 (arcade version) where every single character is balanced. MK2 was very unbalanced, slow, CPU was dirt cheap, no running, no combos, got boring pretty quick, bad replay value, and so on. When MK3 was released the game was pretty much rushed (which is why none of the ninjas like scorpion or reptile are in it and the fatalitys are pretty cheesy) and then later on they put out UMK3 (which is Ed boons favorite mortal kombat game to date) the way they wanted MK3 to be. But to say MK2 is the best game in the series makes no sense at all.
BTW only trilogy had the auto-combo not UMK3 or MK3.

6.3 - I do agree with you guys that UMK3

was good. However the autocombo system just seemed lame to me. It would have been OK if it didn't do damage while you blocked the hits. I just remember the original version of MK3 where Subzeros Iceclone move....quarter circle back and LP..was incredibly cheap. You could jump kick someone and do the Iceclone move in mid air to bounce back, and even if they were blocking and touched it they would freeze.

Midway later revised it so you couldn't use that move if you were too close to your opponent or in the corner. Kind of like if you were too close to the corner you couldn't use Scorpions teleport move.

Plus in MK3 the fatalities started to get uber cheesy(animalities...etc). My favorite character has always been Scorpion....but the best "new character" in part 3 was Nightwolf. And the cheapest new character by far was Cyrax.

The ice clone unmasked sub-zero had in MK3 was very broken since it was unblockable. But Cyrax cheesy? Usually everyone says Kabal when I play on xbox live but I guess its different for everyone. I have to agree the fatalitys in mk3/umk3 were very bad. Mk2 had the best 2d ones. After Mk4 my interest in the series has went down.

I hope they wont mess up these games as they did with the last two!!
I'm hopeing that the characters won't move like robots and combos will be more fluid. I also hope that they keep the character selection from Armageddon because that was the best thing in that game...all those characters!

You want a FPS, you can use the Unreal engine.
You want a racer, you can use the Unreal engine.
You want a fighting game, you can use the Unreal engine.
There's really not much this engine can do...

Wondering when the next PacMan will come out, built on the Unreal engine!

Any engine is awesome in the right hands. UE3 on the wrong hands results in Hour Of Victory while in the right hands, it becomes Stranglehold, R6 Vegas and BioShock. Even a game without UT3 like Jericho looks really good.

Hope Ed Boon and MK team can make good use of MK.

Haha thanks man, I just remembered the commercial for MK1 and my friends were like "oh man you're in trouble now", got the genesis version for the blood code and played for such a long time. The last MK game I played was Shaolin Monks because it did what I wanted the Subzero game to do. Did they take out the "dial-a-combos" from the core fighting games that were introduced in Deadly Alliance? Because while it looked cool to have an 18 hit combo spanning 3 styles, I hated being "locked" into that. If they can offer up more freeform mechanics then I just might be playing again.

The MKs that I played for ages were MK2, UMK3 and MK:Deadly Alliance.

As for "dial-a-combos" in Deadly Alliance, they introduced the "Breaker feature" in later MK:Deception and Armageddon which allows one to break such a huge combo and get out of lock.

Shaolin Monks was awesome IMO. A truly underrated brawler / beat-em up. The game was too short though.
