MGS4 E for All 07 Interview, Payton says Blu-ray needed for MGS4

Gametrailers interviewed Ryan Payton about new features, user feedback and blu-ray necessity with Metal Gear Solid 4. The most interesting segment being when they asked Ryan Payton if Blu-ray was needed for MGS4. He replies: "The fact remains that we couldn't do what what we're doing on MGS4 without Blu-ray because we really eat up that capacity".

so Kojima is basicly saying that MGS4 is much much bigger then Crysis, even though it looks only half that good?
Or maybe, like in MGS2, he stuffed the game with LOADS of movies, wich off course take a lot of diskspace.
Be honest people, The only reason you would need all that space is because you don't use (or barely use) any compression what so ever.
I'm NOT saying that MGS4 will suck, hell no, it looks very promising and has loads of potential, but using 50GB would mean that the game would be EXTREMELY huge, as i'm sure it isn't. Take 20hours of single player time (wich is very decent) and that will be it.

5.2 - Kojima does not use CG Movies

It's all done in-engine, which requires relatively little space since animation files are in the double digits; 720p video, at high quality, can eat up into hundreds of megabytes. It looks like while they are still putting a lot of emphasis on the hollywood-quality cinematics, they're also trying to tell a lot more of the story during actual gameplay.

6.1 - This could easily still come to the Xbox 360 with compressed data, but are you paying attention?

This needed BR for the ps3 b/c of Hours and hours and hours of video he said (ps3 doesn't compress well), and that's the crap that p1ssed me off on MGS2, I hate having to watch all that unneccesary video. Some you can push a button and it's skips it but some your forced to watch.

He didn't even know if 25 or 50 gig BR, so don't take his comments as credible.

I will say the game looks better than it did 3 months ago, I hope it's not all bottlenecking when released as it was last month. ps3 can finally smile when this games released, but only if it's faults are fixed including the horrible looking online I saw last month.

I feel like this game is taking forever to be released, it's like old abe lincoln one said "4 score and 7 years ago".

Seems pretty clear to me. Why do people always think developers can compress an unlimited amount of data? This simply isn't true on consoles, especially on one that has a core version without a hard drive.

Perhaps they could bring it to the 360 one day, but it wouldn't look, play and be the same game we are seeing today.

Wow... are you trying for the stupid award or something? A compression algorithm is about crunching numbers. And if you check - it is something the Cell CPU's SPU's does better than anything else. And then you try do drag the PS2 game MGS2 in as supporting evidence. Wow. Just absolutely wow. I programmed for years. If you ever apply for a position as a programmer - don't repeat these statements... cause you will really have a hard time finding employment.

We're talking about a game that has been conceptualized to be MASSIVE and sprawling in it's concept and scope - from the very beginning.

Such a thing is simply not possible on the 360 because of the disc space issue. This is a fact.

This is not the last time you will hear this either. It seems to be becoming a weekly occurrence.

Not to be mean or anything but thats the problem if it was dont on Blu ray we wouldnt get to see all the nice textures and true sounds like it was ment to be, and if were built from the ground up on 360 and put on DVD9 it wouldnt look like its true form but rather dumb down like most games on the 360, for example R6 Vegas, can anyone tell me why the background of the game looks like that IE paper mountain and non moving sky, or why each building look like they put 3 pieces of cardboard boxes to make it look 3D and why most of the city is flat with pasted pictures of whats suppose to be the ground? Now you see where im going right, when it comes to space PS3 is where its at, no need to cut corners in small or BIG ways.

10 - Lets not be hasty.....

Though I own a PS3 and and have been a Sony supporter since the PS1, longer if you count all my TVs, companies really say anything they want when they want. As unlikely as it might seem, multiple disks is an option for this game if given enough time, does Konami want to do that? Who knows. They could also release a Twin Snakes type deal like they did for the GameCube, maybe an extended and enhanced edition of MGS 3 for the 360.

My point is, that once there is money to be made, there is nothing certain. Though I am a PS3 owner, I am not one of those who share the mentality that only exclusives are worth buying. As a gamer I fell like a good game should be available to all the game loving public, and in all honesty, I am sure most gamers 360 or PS3 are decent. The fanboys we see on here make up but a small but more vocal percentage of the total gaming population (Thank God).

Regardless, this is one of the reasons I owned a PS1, 2 and 3. This series defined what a game should be in my eyes, its like the Prestige (An excellent movie, dueling magicians never get old, "Great Danton") of video games. Always classic stuff, always worth going through multiple times, even MGS2, and most importantly, always entertaining and innovative (Fighting the End was one of the greatest moments in video gaming history).

MGS games are always lengthy, I am not surprised that they like the extra space provided by BluRay. BluRay disk capacity is like car insurance, day to day you don't see the use, but when you get into an accident, your glad you have it.

In the video, Producer Ryan Peyton says: "were are not compressing the sound files."

Given the amount of dialog and everything in the game, the raw uncompressed sound files will probably be many many GIGS.

But doesn't uncompressed sound tend to be better? If they are going for the "Theater" feel that the PS3 was compared to by Kojima, sound would be a huge part of that, and if that means having most or all of it uncompressed then I think its worth doing. There is nothing worse than a game with inconsistent components, if your going to do it, do it all the way.

I agree with you that he does give sound as an example in the video. But honestly no one on this site know what all is going into MGS4 and even IF they did compress the sound, how much space they would still need for everything else plus the sound files. Because correct me if I'm wrong he also said there is "hours and Hours of movie" I would think even with compression that would take up a large amount of space. Then again I'm not a dev or in the industry so maybe I'm wrong

I believe things are read better when compressed, thats what I've heard but I'm not programmer so please don't jump on me.

I truly feel that many PS3 exclusive titles go out of there way to use up as much space on that disk and for no reason. Simply to say 'Hey you see, we needed it.' Heavenly Sword which is a great game had 11 gigs of audio, that sure didn't make it a longer game and my ears didn't hear the difference. I think that most PS3 games could fit onto a DVD9 if the developers needed it to. Some maybe not, but a good deal could.

As someone stated above, the Orange Box has 5 games on one disk! It's all about learning to make the best of what you have and that goes for both blu-ray and DVD. Developers will always find a way, now if more devs actually used that extra space on blu-ray to make huge sprawling worlds that took up hours of game play, that would be putting it to good use.

uncompressed sound is the closest you get to a true theater experience. Which is the reason several PS3 games use it because it makes an impact they could compress it but then you get your regular surround sound and for some one that has the equipment and has the space its not acceptable.

To be able to tell a difference, one needs a decent audio set up. It would be similar to the difference between listening to a song in a MP3 (compressed) format and listening to the same song on a CD (not compressed). It can be hard sometimes to tell the difference.

I see. I guess we will have to wait and see. MGS games tend to be on the long side too, so it might be a combination of a few factors that make BluRay a bit more desirable. However, its all speculation I guess, we will all have to wait and see what Kojima has in store for PS3 owners.

In the end, I guess what we can take from the statements in the video is that whatever vision Kojima had, BluRay seems to have facilitated him executing them. Regardless, I am sure their track record is an indication of good things to come.

This is becoming very annoying. This guy said this. That guy said that. Come on! Play the games. When the game comes on 360, if an extra disc is needed, so be it. This isn't a sandbox type of game. I'm sure it has looooooooooots of cut scenes. The question has always been; is it worth for gamers to pay extra for a system that at it best matches 360 on visual quality?

I own both 360+hd dvd, Ps3 60 gig.
