Ratchet and Clank HD Pixelation Issue - Insomniac Responds?

There has been some discussion about the recently released demo of Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction for the Playstation 3 on the well known gaming forum Neogaf.

A very select few have been having some visual troubles with the game, resulting in a pixelated mess on their HDTV's. This is surprising, since most who have experienced the beauty of Insomniac's game can see that it is very sharp and pretty damn special to say the least. So what is going on here?

MANUAL UPDATE: Images of the actual problem have been added as well as the actual link to the Neogaf forum containing supposed response from the Insomniac employee.

The poster on the Neogaf board has been confirmed as an actual employee of Insomniac. Well known to the board, and featured in several of Insomniac's Podcasts.

I have played both of the demo's, on disc and downloadable, multiple times now and have never ever had this problem. I don't know why people try to pass this off as credible.

played the demo disk from gamespot and i downloaded it off the store to compare the two and even though the demo disk has sharper colors the psn demo was very crisp and no problems at all

it's an xbots rebuttle to the 640p halo. i have played the demo countless times just to appreciate the beauty of the game. this doesn't occur.
it's too bad some loser is spreading bogus info. if this is happening, someone should make a video of it. and if it's only one person, maybe their tv has issues. but the game? i doubt its the problem.(if there is a problem)

First off, no one is blaming Insomniac, it has yet to be confirmed as a game or television set issue. The Insomniac member who supposedly responded on the board did not admit to it being a game issue and simply asked if the individuals having the issue could provide more information about their TV etc.

I agree, but it sucks for people that are are looking to post information about BOTH consoles and could care less about the fanboy flame wars. If you look at my posting history, I have not favored one console over the other...ever. I post what I feel is interesting information. Period.

This site deserves better than the fanboy contributors that are ruining it for everyone else.

The article attempts to be informative and suggest a cause, it is speculative and should be taken as such.

As for 704p...it should be made very clear. This is nothing like the 640p case. Ratchet is still rendered at the quality of 720p and sent to the television as a 720p signal...excpet it has a very slight (and I mean very! 8pixels above and below) border above and below...just like you'd see when you watch a blu-ray film except hardly noticable.

Ratchet looks stunning on my TV...it's very sharp, and has some great anti-aliasing. As the article says, it's a problem for the very select few. And what should be taken from this, is that Insomniac are willing to try and fix it for any obscure HDTV out there!

It is sent to the tv as a 720p signal and if you have a 1080p tv...thats the signal sent to your TV from the Xbox 360.

In the case of Ratchet being 704p...The Ps3 doesn't upscale it to 720p. So what it is is what you get.

Personally all that 640p and 702p talk is irrelevent. If the game looks good...thats all that matters. And in both cases the games look good.

Halo 3 looks fantastic on my 1080p tv. And my son plays his copy on a 1080i tv and it looks great there too. Same with Ratchet....it looks nice on my TV at 720p. Developers use different techniques to make their game run at a steady frame rate and add different graphical touches. As long as the finished product looks good. Thats all that matters. 1080p doesn't guarentee a game looks good. Same with the other resolutions...its all about art style and graphical fidelity. HDR lighting...ect....

No. Its not the same. The PS3 doesnt have signal upscaling built in. As such, it relies on the TV to do the scaling itself. That is why you have Insomniac asking "What TV are you using?"

The thing that Halo 3 was criticized for is EXACTLY what is taking place here, the Halo 3 was "640p" R&C *IS* "702p".

But in the case of the Halo 3, the Xbox 360's built-in upscaler sent out a 720p or 1080p signal.

In the case of the PS3, it is sending out the 702p signal and causing these problems.

Not only is the situation the same (not HD!!!1! 640p/702p) but it is result is *WORSE* on the Playstation because it is sending out a non-upscaled to 720/1080p signal and causing pixelation and buggyness on some televisions.

I have got to say this and I own all three systems the ps3 no matter how much you want to hate on or dope you smoke to make the 360 look good clearly has a huge graphic advantage and to clairify there is not one game on 360 that you can clearly see passed 20-30 ft in front of you.

This game is amazing my kids love it I was wowed by it. enough said go buy a real tv that can display 1080p!

Why can't the PS3 owners and fans of this game SEE that this story is not meant to be a knock on the game! It is however, meant to show that IF that is indeed an employee of Insomniac that they are SO down to earth and considerate when it comes to their fan base that they would ACTUALLY care to help the SMALL amount of individuals having the issue!

Looks like a TV issue more than anything. The 704P thing still has me laughing though. PS3 devs can't exactly lie about the native resolution of their games since the system doesn't upscale PS3 titles. If they claim it's 720p...it's 720p.

Don't jump to conclusions DJ. There are lots of upscaled PS3 games. If you read the article the PS3 is not upscaling the image at all...the TV's overscan will make it fit the screen. It is only specualtion, but it is found out by the same guy who discovered Halo3 is 640p.

704p may be misleading. More accurately it should be described as 720p with 8pixel black borders above and below.

**edit**DJ: All PS3 titles (except maybe Tony Hawks and Conan) are HD - that is 720p or higher. There are a few titles that are upscaled to 1080p eg. GTHD. Ratchet is still 720p quality...it's not upscaled. Well 704p can actually help with certain things...I'd need my friends at B3d to help me out here. Anyway it is specualtion...and not much of an issue anyway, it looks amazing.
