Unreal Tournament III: CVG Preview

CVG writes: "When our straining ears picked up the first whispered rumours emanating from Epic that Unreal Tournament 3 was coming to PS3, we couldn't sleep at the prospect of getting our mitts on the game. Not a huge fan of FPS games but one game has always caught my eye in this genre and that would be Unreal Tournament. Since the original on PC and on through 2k3 and 4, I cannot WAIT for this title to grace my PS3.

I guess you are going to play with mouse and kb. Its somewhat hard to understand transitioning to controllers if you played UT2K3/4 on PC.

I'll give the controller a go but I can see myself changing back to keyboard. I really don't see the redeemer being too great on Sixaxis (even though I see myself as fairly good with the controller)

The best thing about the Unreal games is their fast paced non stop action. It all comes down to reaction time instead of any real strategy imo. This is a definite must buy for me. I may have to invest in a USB keyboard/mouse though. :)

fast paced non stop action is great but what I think makes UT better than anything else is the mutators. Allowing an infinite amount of variations between games.

3.2 - The "real" strategy in UT is much more visceral than other overt titles

There are -hundreds- of little strategies that you pretty much have to learn by instinct. Reflex alone will make you panic and get you killed.

yeah UT3 has some game modes that put a large focus back on strategy...but the pacing of these games has always been so fast there is no standing around figuring what you are going to do...

shoot first...ask questions later...plenty of time to get the objective when you are wading through piles of meat...

6 - The things that makes you good at fps

The first thing is to not move around youre aim to much, keep it in same height so you can just pull the trigger to get a nice headshot. Never relax and never panic, just keep focused, if u panic u will die before you even can see the opponent. Another important thing is to learn the maps, if know the maps u know were the enemy usually shows up, and u know were u can find youre favourit wepon. And last but not least, if youre about to die throw all youre grenades away. There´s no greater joy than getting the bastard who shot you and blast him to hell =)

8 - it looks amazing to say the least. and this year it's prolly the most graphics intensive game on the ps3

i will definately be getting this game when it drops this year. i can tell you this game will prolly steal warhawks online premise when it hit's. i cant wait. i've never been this big of a first person shooter fan in the last gen. after playing the excellent half life and resistance i fell in love with it. it rocks. and unreal games all rock. at leats the ones made by epic. gears of war. and now this

You can use a wireless USB combo. I have a wireless Logitec Mouse/KB (well, I have a Bluetooth KB, too, but need a BT Mouse - which doesn't work in Linux, though). But both work without cables from the couch.

this game cannot be played on a console... it's too fast paced and requires perfect reflex aiming which is impossible to master with a controller even with max sensitivity

i don't really like FPS's so this game would have to have features that totally blow away anything i've ever seen for me to get it.

but my buddy works with Midway so i've been getting Midway games for my psp for free. he said he'd get me ps3 games too so if he does, i'll definately be seeing you guys online.

I already played it, and the game is awesome. In fact it was the highlight of Leipzig (that and the strip clubs I went to ;))

I'll be getting it on PS3 though and not PC as I dont have the money to build a new PC atm to play it.

The people at the UT3 booth said that they would have servers for M&K players only and other servers for SIXAXIS only, with the Sixaxis ones having slightly slower gameplay to accommodate for the controllers.

I'll be using my M&K though no doubt.

19.1 - More diverse owner base

The xbox is well known for its large fps fanbase.

The playstation has a diverse owner base - just like its games - and likely to have nowhere near(percentage wise) as many FPS fans.

So UT3 will do respectable sales but will do much better on the xbox 360.

That's questionable. Especially with Playstation starting to make a name for itself with online gaming. And besides this is a timed exclusive and people don't seem to have any sort of patience now a days. Oh ya forgot to mention the diversity of the Playstation franchise is what leads it to sell 125M units, so there could be just as many FPS gamers on the PS3 as there are on the X360.

23 - PlayStation 3's Version

The PlayStation 3's version of the game is pretty much the same with some maps left out. You'll be able to use a key board / mouse or a SIXAXIS controller. Also you can't forget about the mods and there was going to be cross platform play. The only reason I'm hearing they didn't do that because of the herdals like cheating etc. So once it's released they might have an update to add that in.

So if you decide to get this on the PlayStation 3 you won't be missing anything but a couple of maps. The XBOX 360 isn't allowed mods because of it's online service. Only Sony's console as the openess to allow such things like the mods to happen. With the blu-ray the maps and all the content isn't a problem. The XBOX 360 might have some problems with that alone and with the mods I don't know.

Where do I put those mods?

Plus with bigger 2.5 SATA Hard Drives (laptop hard drives) soon that can go up to like 500GB - 1TB things will be interesting. The XBOX 360 only goes up to 120GB and the PlayStation 3 can go up to I think 200GB - 350GB right now. Plus the PlayStation 3 hard drives are more cheaper with more memory so it's all good.
