PS3 UT3 to have less maps
93
From the IGN Unreal Tournament 3 preview with Mark Rein:
"Mark Rein said that they are shooting for a November release and did say that the PS3 version would have "most" of the content that would be found in its PC brother. He said that there would be a couple of maps that would be left out of the PS3 version simply because the system didn't have the resources to produce a smooth gameplay experience. But rest assured, the classic Unreal Tournament modding could still be performed and uploaded to your friends"

1.3 - It will be interesting to see what maps would not work...
Currently, minimum PC specifications are CPU: 2.8Ghz RAM: 512MB As usual, the beauty of the Unreal engine is that it doesn't take that much power on a PC. Because you're running a heavy O.S. (even XP), and you have to get your engine running on different CPUs, sound card, graphic cards, etc, lot's of power and memory is lost into overhead...
Now, the beauty of a console, is that all the hardware is always the same all over the world. So you can tweak your engine even more because it does run on specific hardware... With the O.S. being a lot smaller than XP or Vista, only one sound processor and one graphic card to worry about, it's quite easy to get the engine working on half that CPU power and memory... That's how they can run it nicely on a console.
Now, if you're running 64 players online, on a huge map, sure enough, you may hit bottlenecks... We may only have to drop it to 32 players (not so bad), or maybe drop a few parts of the map, or some fancy texture to make it work... It will definitively be interesting to see how maps will evolve in the future... It may even be possible that some of those maps may not even work with the minimum PC specifications afterall. The engine fully support Dual-Core and 64 bit processing...
We will know soon enough I guess!

Console versions will never catch up. At the time the SW on consoles improve, the PC market will release more powerful HW. But, I am not willing to pay $1000 more just for that little bit more visual power.
- I prefer the easier usage of the consoles (Disk in and go - no installing)
- The fixed feature set. You know that your game will run, no matter how old it is.
The only reason for a PC are (IMO) strategy games, but I am wondering when the consoles will have that, too. I see no reason why C&C can't run on a hi def screen and support keyboard and mouse (as an alternative to pads).

I don't know how true it is but I've been hearing that the maps that they aren't including are just the 64 player maps. Is that really that big a deal? Before Xbots all chime in, just remember he also said some time ago that content would have to be cut from the 360 version due to disc space, so only PC gamers get to laugh... and its at both camps. So lets all try to keep the flaming to a minimum.

Where do you live? In the US I can build a gaming rig that will play anything coming out in the near future with power to spare for about $600-$800. Just have to go to newegg.com and buy pieces and put it together yourself. Its more effort but you save a bundle

5.1 - I thought the same thing.
This makes me think the UT3 community will become divided from the PC community.
The PC community will be busting out uncanned mods, and uncanned maps (all for free mind you), and one of two things will happen.
1. The PS3 is compatible, in which case these missing maps wont matter, because we'll just hop on a server and download them anyways.
2. The PS3 isn't compatible, and half the content released from the PC camp will be useless for the PS3.

We'd all really hate PC fanboys if they showed up. They own us in every way.
Our only shot would be boasting some great exclusived, but then the pc boys would just say "I'm not worried, I'll play it using an emulator in a few years."
Let face it, our consoles just can't compete with $4,000 worth in the latest hardware.

Mark Rein is saying they ran out of RAM,lets face it the Developers can use the XBOX360 RAM better than the PS3 RAM and UNREAL is going to be the perfect example. Gabe Newell stated the same exact thing about the PS3 hardware, and that is why he picked the 360 over the PS3 when it came to ORANGE BOX.I would not be suprised if HALF LIFE 2 ran or looked like Shlt on the PS3 because of the RAM.

what GG is doing with KZ2 is very clever, they use big levels and detailed models with low res but varying textures(also I havent seen that many materials like in Unreal) combined with motion blur and really good lighting. So dont use Killzone 2 to mock Epic devs, UT3 may not use SPUs(as it is mainly a PC game) for great lighting and motion blur but other than that its much more detailed. Of course Crysis is beyond these two despite what fanboys say.

UT3 is an open source game so you can not optimize and use clever tricks to mask the PS3 limited RAM like Killzone 2 did. Its either you have the hardware to run UT3 in all its glory or you don't.

@BADBOYEK4
i didnt know thats ow they made it...thats stupid, i thought the ps3 had an integrated map editor, EPIC is just money hungry...hey if u have a friend who has the game then ur lucky then i guess...but thats still pretty gay, they shouldve at least put a map editor in the ps3 version...

Epic is trying to make money 2 ways off the PS3 fans, In order to make your own maps you would have to Buy the PC version of Unreal along with the PS3 version, and then you got to have a PC that can run Unreal.PS3 owners can download maps made by the PC players and put them on the PS3.

the modding for the PS3 will work just like the PC, according to Rein...you will be able to download mods/maps for free from the UT website...and there will be selected mods available on the PS store...they said the game layout on the xmb will be slightly different, with a "folder" in the game utility that will be opened...allowing maps to by copied into it...then the running game scan that folder for content...so it basically works just like the PC game...
but you are right...the PS3 game doesn't include the modding tool...only the pc game does...so you get kind of stuck there...but I can't wait for this game...

you cant just take stuff from the PC and put it on the PS3, to use Mark Rein's exact word you have to "cook" it for PS3 using a tool in the PC editor where the map or mod is being created. The cooked file/package can then be distributed to PS3 gamers who can transfer it to their PS3s to play it.

"I build computers - I know how SW works". Well, I know why we don't hire these guys, then :) (No offense, but that is not enough, sorry). Breaking "resources" just into RAM is simplified. Even if it would be RAM, they could stream levels instead of filling up RAM.
No Epic uses the Unreal Engine. To be honest, I am not a huge fan of that engine on the PS3. I haven't really seen any good game using Unreal Engine, yet (best example being Rainbow6 Vegas and Strangle Hold - which all have the same visual appeal, IMO). Unreal will be the best implementation of Unreal3 on the PS3, no doubt about it. But it is still a PC centric engine. It can be optimized to utilize most of the unique PS3s architecture, but - well I don't know the internals - but I would guess, to really utilize the PS3 fully, they would need to rewrite that thing (e.g. does the render back end utilize deferred rendering ? What about post render filters ? Usually physics in U3 is used thru plugins, AFAIS, a lot come with Havok. Havok runs pretty good on the PS3, how well can that be integrated, how does U3 scale to SPUs with running physics/AI. etc. etc.).
Just to say "resources == RAM" is simplified, I'd say.
None the less, I think Epic did a good job on UT3. The visuals I've seen so far are really looking amazing. I think this is a great game, I am eager to experience the after touch SIXAXIS controls (I love those in Heavenly Sword, totally cool concept. I hope it is as intuitive as it is in HS).
I still haven't heard anything about UT3 single player experience or story. AFAIS, it has one, right ? Would be nice to hear about that, too.

seriously, lol at Dpa and the Sony haters. This article is more about hands-on report @ TGS.
"The next map we loaded up was the destroyed city level that we've detailed for you before and the level played just as well as it had in the past. The massive Darkwalker was still the focus of the level and wreaked an insane amount of havoc each and every time it was piloted. There was a bit of a bug in which the framerate would drop substantially when the screen filled with its primary mode of fire (a massive fiery laser). Mark Rein was on-hand to explain that it was indeed a bug and not a performance issue. His favorite line of the night was, "If there were no bugs we'd have shipped by now!"
oh, and good news for content down the road
"Rein even told us that there were plans to allow for players to release mods for sale on the Playstation Network and that the most popular mods and maps would be compiled and sold in an updated Unreal Tournament 3 package later down the line. We'll have much more on Unreal Tournament 3 as its holiday release date draws closer."
See how misleading the title is? I'm surprised its approved so fast, but I guess the current headline will get more views.

Just fyi i am no 360 fanboy, if anything its the other way round. I own both a 360 and a PS3 (bought on european launch day) and although i play my 360 most out of both i prefer the PS3 as it has way more interesting games on the horizon. I posted the article because i thought it was important to let people know so they can make an informed decision about whether they will buy the PC or PS3 version. I would have done exactly the same for an article about a 360 game.

14 - this is nothing but positive news..PS3 has an Epic game in November...hmmmm
PS3 has an "Epic" game coming in November! Uncharted: Drakes's Fortune, Ratchet and Clank: Future Toools of Destruction, and Unreal Tournament 3 are killer apps that will keep PS3 safe this Holiday. Many people would rather play these three games paired with the Assassins Creed's, Call of Duty 4's, and Rock Bands (which is wireless for PS3). On top of Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Eye of Judgement, Singstar (first reviews are 9+), Lair and Haze. This is the best Christmas line-up for Sony's first year ever, they might not win, but they will be damn safe! Also people buy consoles for the immediate spring titles as well. They think out what will give me the most killer apps in 2008!. Everyone knows the heat Sony has coming early 2008. Epic fans who may be looking for a PS3 this fall will buy it with Unreal Tournament! These top 3 titles are all action packed, fast paced, and system sellers!

15 - The most important part of that statement
"He said that there would be a couple of maps that would be left out of the PS3 version simply because the system didn't have the resources to produce a smooth gameplay experience."
Personally, I always thought when developers are back on MAPS/CONTENT, when they have Blu-Ray at their disposal, seems kind of ODD?
That just re-enforce my belief, the PS3 have many Weaknesses and Limitations. Fanboys flame about having more content because of "EXTRA SPACE" but here is one case where the PS3 just couldn't "cut the mustard" regardless of it's Blu-Ray medium.
After all PC will by far outshine anything on a console in like 2 years. Console will never be able to keep up, well quite frankly, they are not "SCALABLE". Your a fool to think that if a Console game that looks awesome was done with the same amount of time and support on a PC, that the Console would win every time.
Consoles have will always have CPU, RAM, GPU limitation. It's not just about having Gigs of space, it all have to work together.

I think that you make a good point. The flaming fanboys always talk up Blu-ray and how it is going to allow developers to make bigger games and larger maps, but here is a game where that extra capacity does nothing to help the problem.
As for performance, is Epic porting to the PS3 from the PC? Or did they build it from the ground up for PS3?

Keep in mind that consoles don't use RAM like a PC does. A PC is a multi-purpose machine, so it needs RAM and CPU cycles for ancillary tasks that consoles do not. Modern PC operating systems are a huge overhead burden, so a large portion of a PC's RAM is taken up dealing with that.
The 512 MB of RAM that modern consoles have is not a limitation like it would be for a PC.
