EGM: KillZone 2 Dumbest AI..... and Halo 3 Best AI

In what looks like the "dumbest" comparison, EGM have decided to side by side compare Halo 3 - due out on release in under 3 weeks, with the alpha build of Sony's KillZone 2 that was previewed at E3. Despite the game being almost a year away from completion, and despite the developers noting that the A.I was not yet complete, the journalists at EGM wanted to include the game in their "Best Of.." section of the magazine and it seemed like the only category best suited for KillZone 2 was the "Dumbest AI".

This is a direct contradiction from the latest hands-on by IGN and Game Informer, whom actually chose to note the positives of the early version of the game in relation to the "aggressively good" intelligence of the game.

1 - The only dumb thing here is EGM in this case

When the game is released and it is given a low score for bad A.I. then I can accept that. But to even to attempt to preview an alpha-build and award it with this "Dumbest AI" tag is rather insulting considering that the game is almost a year away from completion. The only aspect close to a finish regarding the game were it's graphics - yet it was ignored and instead they focused on the artificial intelligence of the characters which were obviously no where near finished, according to the developers.

You can say what you will about the game but this is a cheap shot, and further fuel for those who claim a media bias towards the PlayStation 3. Afterall, did EGM preview Halo 3 September 2006 and give it a derogative award based on that build?

P.S. I'll remember those who failed my story after I asked them to wait until I provided the link of the scanned image. Don't doubt me again.

Hey thats EGM for you. First they compared "Home" which is unreleased to live, which has been out here for over 5 years now.

And, now they are comparing a game which isn't even in beta to a game which has gone gold ?

Also, totally agreed with Merc3nary. They compared Live with Home (Which should have been Live with PSN) and still forgot about most of things that made Home great.

I think after this they'll say Super Mario Bros has better online features than UT3.

I think magazines like EGM are just struggling and need to publish outrageous eye catching comments in order to draw interest to their magazine.

The fanboy situation is the biggest problem in the gaming world and they want to take advantage of it. All the magazines do. That's why the review scores are always so controversial.

3.2 - GOD MODE and AI?

All of the killzone2 GP footage we've seen is in God mode/medium difficulty. So we're not seeing the AI as it would be in normal mode.

The DEV also explained that the AI is aware of all the physics objects and knows what part of the environment is destructible to shoot the player through.

Who knows how aggressive the AI is on hard with god mode disabled?

Killzone One AI ain't so bad. In Counter Strike and Battelfield 2 Online I saw people with more retarded AI lol.

Also. Good thing I did not listen to Biased Reviews of Lair like EGM. I love it Sixaxis is fun to play with. While it took me some time to get used to it I feel like a real Dragon Rider. Whooooshhh.

13.3 - I don't think Halo has good AI

People are basing Halo AI when most people didn't even played the single player. Halo has dumbazz A.I..The best A.I. I seen so far is Resistance: fall of man. They will shoot and flank you and when they are close to you they don't just sit 3 feet away shooting at you they will come and melee your azz. Halo all the 3 foot purple aliens do is just run in open field like idiots and the elite just stands their shooting at you waiting for you to melee him. Try doing that in resistance, you will get melee more times than any other game, I guarantee it

The first time they show the enemy in this video they do jump over cover but all the other times, the AI is actually smart. Even the dev talking said they will flank you and that's exactly what the do. While they shoot at you, you can see them moving towards the side or for cover. I think so far the AI is decent but not the dumbest AI.

To be true here I think Halo 2 AI is not that smart, but actually, I think they dont need to. Halo is a game with its own style so if dev put AI like those in FEAR then the game will lose its sensation as Halo game. (think about the purple alien hid behind a rock and only shoot when you look away, not so fun right?)

Anybody else feel that this year, game journalism went to the crapper?
Scores have incredible standard deviations, there is console bias, and every corner is filled with ps3/xbox fanboys... what on earth is going on?

I think video reviews are a good solution... and multiple scores, like GI.

On another note, specific console magazines (like PSM/XBOX) should at least tap into what their specific console owners like. I expect them to review games based on the particular console and fanbase.

I still cant believe PSM gave warhawk a 6.5. Talk about not knowing what your mission in life is.

The thing you guys have to realize is, journalists already ignore so much of the weak stuff in alpha/beta/demo versions they view, that that's what we have to blame when games which are expected to be triple A suddenly turn out to be coasters. Take Black for instance - the game received a ton of hype as being the next big console shooter while anyone looking at footage pre-release could guess that there was absolutely nothing to it beyond the visual effects. And yet, based on the notion that it would be "unfair" to criticize weaknesses before the final release build, journalists pretended not to notice anything wrong, and continued to hype the game as an AAA shooter.

Then the game finally gets released, and suddenly everyone expecting good things was surprised with mediocre or plain old poor reviews citing the simplistic gameplay, lack of mission structure, lack of challenging AI, lack of level design, etc. I played it briefly when my roommate rented it, and it was definitely not worth a purchase. Granted, I saw the mediocrity coming a mile away, so I was not surprised, but anyone who believed what the magazines and websites said prior to release would have been hugely disapointed.

And this sort of stuff happens all the time (Killzone 1 for example). Sure, when it's something really obvious and superficial - like the unpolished graphics of the Halo 3 Beta, then everyone notices and points it out, but when it comes to actual gameplay issues, people don't pay attention, and journalists don't bother to mention it. To the discerning eye, it's there, but everyone is usually too busy hyping a game and talking about its visuals to notice.

Well, I think it's time for this trend to end. I think journalists need to be honest and attentive to a game's shortcomings even before release. If the developers can't get gameplay aspects up to par for demos, then maybe they should try working on that first and worrying about the over-rated graphics later...or they should at least come clean and admit that there are things missing, and promise to work hard on it before the final release. I'm tired of journalists pretending a game is absolutely perfect all the way up to release, then suddenly coming out with all these glaring issues in the review at the last minute. The kiddy gloves need to come off, and that means the whole "omg I can't beleive u criticized a beta" mentality" needs to go.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, however the real problem is the fact that this form of reviewing is one sided this generation. every game for ps3 is criticized from day one. xbox360 games are generally hailed and shortcomings are ignored for the most part.

i own both systems, and it gets really annoying to decide what games [on either console] to buy because of the slant.

- xbox360 games shortcomings are ignored or overlooked, so their scores are inflated and i dont know what im going to end up with until i rent or buy the game. gears of war was a great game, but no one said anything about the short, linear single player campaign. no one mentioned how glitchy and laggy the multiplayer was. i would have bought the game regardless, but if im going to read your review i would have at least liked to have been better informed.

- ps3 games are graded with a -1 handicap. so a great game like oblivion; which now that i've played on both systems, i realize the ps3 version is a good deal more superior, but it STILL received lower scores on nearly EVERY single review out there. the justification for the lower scores is "well, theres no downloadable horse armor". YES! "horse armor". thats the only complaint. who cares about horse armor when you get the patches, additional content, much better graphics, much better loading time? despite all of these extras, the game still scored lower?

if there are flaws in a game, i want to know. i dont want fluff reviews for either system. these sites could at least stand to be consistent.
