GT5 Prologue: Damage Modelling on BD, not on PSN
28
IGN writes:
"Sony has confirmed that European PlayStation 3 owners can get behind the wheel of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue toward the end of the year. This taste of Sony's first true next-gen GT is scheduled for release on both Blu-Ray and PlayStation Network.
While Prologue is heading to PSN, it won't be free like the previously released Gran Turismo demo and doesn't include damage modelling - unlike the Blu-ray version. However, both versions do include more than 40 cars, as well as offering the chance to go head-to-head with fellow speed freaks in 16-player online races"

It could if we assume the inclusion of damage-modelling takes a substantial amount of data size.

Which therefore means the damage modelling in GT5 is substantially deep and incredibly realistic. I can't imagine Forza's damage modelling taking up that much room on their dvd somehow

what's the big deal? If you want damage modelling (if this is true) then just get the disk and keep your HDD (or external) more free. _Bots might even say this is giving us "options". =P
Make no mistake about it -- no matter which version you get, there's nothing in the world that can match this game in genre. Period.

5 - Hmm.... interesting
I find it interesting that something like damage would use up so much more space that they can't make it downloadable.
Either way I am the type to buy the disk just to have the disk.
I have a feeling this will not be the last we hear of this though :).

6 - You must buy the Blu Ray Version!
This is the first GT Prologue I am going to purchase. GT Prologue always sells between 2-4 million copies worldwide. It's only a fraction of the 10-13 million the GT's usually do, but very successful. This will probably be the best selling Prologue because it is so revolutionary! You will want the Blu Ray pretty package to get the full game experience that saves over into the Mother, Gran Turismo 5!

It's understandable since damage modeling and textures will take a huge amount of space.

9 - Confusing
So how will both versions work in multiplayer? With one set of people seeing damage and the others not seeing damage. That's just weird.

That's a very good point, bubble for you sir. From what I can work out (in my tiny little brain) is that it will go one of three ways:
a) The players on blu-ray will have damage visible to all, and the players on PSN won't (because the cars will deform in real-time, no way of stopping the PSN players from seeing it)
b) Players on blu-ray will not be able to compete with players on download
c) Damage modeling will be disabled for online play
I personally reckon it will be c, if this is true

9.2 - Lost Prophet,
I think its neither.
BR players will see damage on 'their' cars, but nobody elses, even other BR players.
DL players will see no damage of any type.
When your car is damaged, the engine renders it and displays it, but doesnt send the information out over the net. It still sends the information that you were doing, speed, turning, braking, etc. Just not the damage information.
But who knows? There will probably be a statement tomorrow, so there is really no need in discussing it.

If you look at custom skinned characters in multiplayer games, only people who have downloaded the skin can see it on others.they have the files to view the textures. So people who have th Blu ray disk will be able to see damage on all vehicles because they have the textures for it while psn players will see none at all.

11 - Maybe they shouldn't bring it out on PSN at all,
if they can't provide the whole experience that someone else does get on Bluray. I think it's bit strange.

maybe they will put damage on the PSN version later with a bunch of patches. then again I'm not really sure what patching can really do.

well patching can basically do whatever the developers want...there can be add-ons...or content that can totally change parts of the code altogether...alterring everything...
however this most likely is an issue with disc space...I don't think there is a size cap on the PS store as of now...but for download speed and time issues, we haven't seen anything over 1.3 gigs yet that I can think of...damage modeling in a game like this would ramp up the game size extremely quickly...the space taken per car model is already extremely high...let alone once things start flying apart...
I don't know though...I am now going to start building my new driver's seat/chair thing out of an old weight bench...just waiting to see what Logitech comes up with for their next wheel...there are some nice wheels out already, but we need an even newer gated 6 speed...with a clutch pedal...

15 - so.. wouldn't this be a much bigger story hidden in this?
if this is true that would solidify that gt5 will have damage modeling which hasn't been officially announced as far as i know.
that would be huge.
somehow i'm not convinced yet.. even tho its from ign.. the story should have read 'GT5 OFFICIALLY HAS CRASH DAMAGE!!!' if they know that for sure. they shouldn't have just stuck that little teaser sentence '..what's more, the downloadable game doesn't include damage modelling - unlike the Blu-ray version.'
very strange imo.

15.1 - then i see this little preview on the same site where they say..
"Will customization be reflected in a car's physical appearance?
Down the road, yes. Right now, no. Yamauchi said that one of the main benefits to developing this title on the PS3 is that the system is powerful enough to craft detailed cars with realistic features inside and out. Cars are built piece by piece, which means changing individual bumpers and hoods is something -- like vehicle damage -- that they can see in the future as part of a system update."
so yeah.

16 - clearly
That would be good news, if damage-mode will be included on the disc ( shame for online though ) but then it will be included later eventually.
And I thought with all the in-game previews that they showed on N4G never on one did I see any sunken metal of some sort ( Ferarri F430 in-game crashed on the barriers and also hit one of the cars, but did not get damaged ) was definitely one of the online "demo".
Do believe this would be one of the most "highly" anticipated games for the PS3 with the "real" GT5 included.
