Blu-ray outpaces HD-DVD 2:1 in U.S.

According to Home Media Research, during the first half of 2007 a total of 1.6M movies were sold on the Blu-ray format. Rival HD DVD sold less than half during the same time period, with a total of 795,000 movies sold. Since the launch of the formats, Blu-ray has amassed sales of 2.2M movies compared to just 1.5M on HD DVD (which includes data collected through July).

True. But a big war is ahead of us before chrismas. Blu-ray has two heavy hitters, namely Spiderman 3 and Pirates of Caribbean 3from Sony and Disney along with Fox's Live Free Or Die Hard & Fantastic Four 2 ROTSS and Disney's Ratatouille. The only big HD-DVD exclusive is Bourne Ultimatum and all of them will be getting Harry Potter, Transformers and Shrek The Third.

Honestly the market is big enough for both formats.

Even if Both formats stay I would imagine All Next-Next Gen systems using a Hybrid Drive.

Putting Blu-ray is ps3 was a smart move for the format. Toshiba should find a console that uses HD-Dvd as its standard.

SpiderMan3 and Pirates of the caribean 3 exclusive on Bluray is really going to hurt Toshiba and HDDVD. Both those movies did better than 300 in the box office. Unless HDDVD gets some more exclusive titles, Toshiba is going to have a very rough holiday.

Lets say PS3 blue rays + retail players are aprox 1.6 million.
I think total retail players of HD dvd are not even 500k. With over 1 million more and only doing double in Movie sales tells me this war is not over until someone Really Really wins the Retail War.

I do agree that the recent insane amount of Bluray/HDDVD stats is really getting out of hand, but what i quoted you on is comepletely false. Not everyone buys consoles for games, as a matter of fact the majority of PS2 owners during the first months of launch bought a PS2 b/c it was regarded as a "cheap DVD player" (just like how the PS3 was regarded as a cheap BluRay player). This whole "secondary if not negligible" function of playing movies is what gave the PS2 the early lead which led to a bigger install base, more games, which ultimatly ended with Sony winning the last-gen console war. If the consumers main focus was solely on games then you'd be telling me that millions of people bought a PS2 for 300bux JUST so they can get their hands on games like fantavision, ridgeracer and summoner...
So, IF BluRayDisks become mainstream or the successor of the DVD format (i'm not saying it will or it won't), it can become a VERY key part in the success of the PS3.

Other than that i can see why you would get annoyed by all these constant stats on Disk formats, it is annoying for sure but it is important (for now atleast).

I believe it was 40% of PS3 owners even know about bluray on their mechine, and only 50% of that use it. So you would be one of the vast minority, being 20% of PS3 owners, that enjoy watching your movies.

HD-DVD could deal a deathblow to bluray this year, if there is a massive price drop, say to about $100 for a cheap stand alone HD-DVD player. Might as well go for broke with the price advantage, because Sony is already taking heavy losses to stay competitive, and $100 HD-DVD players wouldn't be making money right away, but it would provide a price that bluray simply cannot match.

I still cant believe people are buying HD-DVD players and why Universal is still hd-dvd exclusive. Blu-ray has more space alllowing more video data to be saved so blu-ray is truly High definition. We will see blu-ray with a more higher lead this christmas without a doubt.

18 - Pointless War

The war won't end for a long time. Think about it, really. Only a small number of people with TVs have HD. The war won't end until a majority of people choose a side, and the majority won't even have interest in choosing for a long time.

Too many other good formats will be out before anyone wins.

HVD players will likely be out and be affordable enough for some people to buy.

However, I think the PCD will probably actually be affordable before that. It's very easy to make proteins, if you know what chain you're making, and it's supposed to be able to hold 50 TB of information.

The format war is for a sinking ship. There are too many major advances in the forseeable future to information storage for this war to mean anything before the masses decide the winner.

You have to wonder where Blu Ray would be if they never included it in the PS3. It was a brilliant move by Sony to do so. I doubt the format war is over, but it will be interesting to see down the road. What is killing me is the prices of the movies. Amazon is still the best place for me to get movies at around $19-25 a title. I have the fifth element(remastered) and Brothers Grimm coming in Blu ray, and the Heroes Box set shortly after. Either way it goes I'm covered. I just wish the studios would wise up and start lowering the prices of the movies more.

20 - Also the bluray players are better quality...i am talking about the hardware...

lets face it a $499 PS3 is a steal for the best bluray player. It will load a bluray disc in less than 12 secs...this is not possible on any HD-DVD player...some are over a 1 min to load a HD-DVD disc. Alot of people in the HD-DVD camp cover this up...but it is fact. They might get better in the third generation HD-DVD players...but not even the low end HD-DVD players support all the features of HD-DVD.

Toshiba has 3 HD-DVD players
HD-A2 720p/1080i and dvd upconverstion to 1080i $299 after instant rebate (yep this player does not support 1080p)
HD-A20 720p/1080p and dvd upconversion to 1080p $399
HD-XA2 720p/1080p, dvd upconversion to 1080p, 12bit color and hdmi 1.3

Remember the PS3 has all of this (bluray) better than the top of the line toshiba for $499, and it will play games...and has better upscalling of dvds than the toshiba and it will play a bluray movie in less than 12 secs after you press the play button.

I agree and disagree with you on this. The PS3 is nice since it can do both movies and play games. As for stand alone players I think BR is missing out. They do not have their BD-J implemented in their current machines, and out of all of them the PS3 maybe able to do so with a firmware version. Meanwhile everyone else with an earlier BR player is going to be forced to getting a new one if they want any of the movies that will have any interactive features. HD DVD players all will function with the HDi movies including all gen 1. As for loading times Gen 2 HD DVD load just as fast as the PS3. Gen 1 does take a bit longer. Comparing a PS3 to a stand alone player makes no since. Standalone players were not meant to play games, but movies. It is apples and oranges. Now if Toshiba had a player that played games, then by all means do a comparison.

The 1080I or 1080P is a wash in my book. I have compared both and I am hard to find any difference between the two. Reviews on movies that are released on both formats with the same encode have had the same VQ scores. The resolution is still 1080 between the two. Either way your getting a damn great looking picture with either technology.

PPL dont just buy conseles for just games! If that was the case then why did MS come out with the Elite when they have said it isnt about enhancing ur games but it is for mutil-media purposes!

All u ppl that want to say the PS3 is just a blueray player are silly fargers!

This is next gen and MS and Sony have both said they want there system to be the center of all ur entertainment needs!
