Killzone 2 at E3 – Cost $20 Million To Date

Killzone 2 is going to get the full E3 treatment, with its own party in a swanky sushi bar in Santa Monica and everything. It's on at the same time as the Microsoft conference and E3 party, no less! Take that Microsoft!

Apparently Killzone 2, developed by Amsterdam-based Guerilla Games, is the most expensive entertainment project in Dutch history, with a whopping great budget in excess of $20 million (£10 million).

I didn't think it was that bad of a game. If your talking about the looks, its actually a really good looking game, once you get past the first two levels(the first two levels are really boring looking). As for the gameplay I thought it wasn't too bad, not amazing, but it was ok.

If you look back at it now,it did a few things first. A few games today copied it to an extent, Gears of War copied the look of the sprinting, both Gears of War and the Riddick game copied the animated melee kills.

You dumb or what? Crysis is looking like that cuz its running on a system with a vga card more expensive then the ps3 itself. If sony wanted their console to play games and cost $700, then instead of bluray, they should have included an expensive vga card in it so that it cud come up with crysis like graphics. But they wanted to push their video player instead.

Wow that is so evil, why would Sony do such a think.Well, I guess that's how the buisiness is then. Anyway, I think that Microsoft might also try to do something like at the time of Sony's Presentation, but the only think is that they really dont have anygame that would justify missing a Sony Presentation. The best they have is Halo 3, and we all saw that already. The thing is that Sony and Nitendo have a lot more that would amaze you than Microsoft.

Each Media (site, journalist, etc) dont usually work solo. This means that they can be in two places. So for example, Ziff davis (1up show) will send a couple people to get the scoop on KZ2 and others will attend Microsofts event.

Personally, i hope the release media either good or bad on Killzone. I hope they are not bound by contract to be silent. That would suck.

That is def. a lot of money for a game.

But then again, "Water World" was also once the most expensive movie ever to be made.

The NY Yankees have had the highest payroll in Baseball and haven't won a championship.

Killzone 2 may have a lot of money put in it but it does not have any solid foundation to stand on. The first one was HORRIBLE (yes I did play it) and all part 2 is, is a continuation of the same game.

dude like 16 years later...All of Cameron's action movies are some of the best...True Lies was great...The Abyss is still one of my all time favorites...and who could forget the orginal Terminator followed by Aliens...oh yeah and Titanic was the greatest action moive EV4R1eleven...er, w/e...

Only action movies to compete with T1/T2 (the third one was a disaster)...is the original Die Hard...that one is tough to beat, despite being totally different...haha I still have all my T2 collector cards and action figures from 3rd grade...

Anyone remember T2 the arcade game...where you gun thing...It never got a good port (I had it on Game Gear, oh man it sucked)...but that was one of my favorite arcade games of my childhood...

1. So when MS put a huge 360 sign at a PS3 release in France was mature? It's not about maturity, it's about business. "He who laughs last, laughs loudest."

2. This may very well be. Yet you have to think of it this way. Sony has been EXTREMELY tight lipped about KillZone, and they are ready to release the flood gates on what many media outlets want... The 1st to publish anything new on this one game.

I am not saying that MS won't have something equally important at thier conference, but I am willing to bet this KillZone party might be a bit bigger than you are giving credit for.

It's called competition, and is completely natural - and arguably essential - for large, competitive companies who are fighting for the same market, to operate in such a manner.

It's absolutely no different than Walmart opening up beside a less dominant retailer, a television network broadcasting a much-anticipated program to coincide with a competitor's airing or a popular show, or...

Microsoft lowering the price of their 360 precisely following the launch of the PS3's introduction to market.

(XBox 360 ELITE, anyone?)

They're not bashing MS; they're simply putting on some razzle-dazzle which "happens" to be going on at the same time MS is giving their shpeel;

No one's gonna point a gun to their head, and be forced to attend Sony's event instead of Microsoft's.

I vividly recall the 360 being promoted at a number of big box stores, at a significantly lower price than usual during the launch of the PS3, because I remember thinking how many non-tech-savvy parents were going to automatically opt for the 360 for their kids' Xmas gift specifically because the price drop was so enticing.

As for the Elite: Make no mistake to assume that a soon-to-follow Elite version would even exist, had it not been for the release of the PS3.

Black, HDMI ((once-claimed unnecessary not long ago), bigger hard drive...a mere coincidence?

The excess price is relatively little and irrelevant; it's the reasoning - and timing - for the emergence of the Elite that matters.

It's worth it. I am sure it will be an amazing game, but come on, seriously. Try to convert a pepsi drinker to Coke (which tastes better anyhow :P), it'll never happen. Will it kill Halo? No. Do we REALLY care? No. In the end, it's gonna be Halo fans (pepsi) vs. Killzone fans (coke)... And who really cares? Is it that big a need to rub something in someone's face if one game is better than another? I mean, were we all hugged far too little when we were young? Do we ALL have to suffer from penis envy? Whatever. Halo 3 will kick A$$...as will Killzone. Respect for both devs for putting out kick ass games. That's my word. Screw the hype, bring the GAMES.

Okay, I see your point, and I agreed. I just think it's rather immature for everyone in the world that has a ps3 to be screaming about how this game is going to do so on and so forth...I mean, seriously. I was VERY guilty on the fanboyism before the ps3 came out, because I believed the hype...and I am constantly caught with a crow sandwich now. I bought a 360 6 months after my ps3, because alas.....it was just a better system (right now, not saying this isn't going to change....I still have faith). I just hope that either way, at some point in time, everyone can grow the hell up, and just say...."Dude, I wish I had Halo 3," or "Damn...I wish I had killzone 2," while owning either game. I blindly hated Halo, but I just played the first one, and it was good...the second is playing out good as well. I own Killzone, and it is fun too. I can honestly admit I like both. I wish others could do the same, because I am tired of being the Chimp in a room full of Orangutans.

MS paid 50mil just for extra content, so Killzone 2 cost 20mil so far big deal. If MS paid 50mil for content who knows how far they will go, E3 should be good.

The extra content didn't cost $50 million to develop.
That was just the price to get them to do it. Just like when Sony or MS pay a company to make a title exclusive.

The $20 million for Killzone is however for development so far.

The difference is Sony spend $20M to assemble a huge team of talent and fund an ambitous project that might end up being something special. M$ has spent $50M pretty much just to give a thumb to the eye of Sony and win a stage in the pissing contest. That, and just because they can. They already have the same game. The price they have paid for bonus content which only a percentage of the original buyers of GTA4 will get/buy means they will never make money on this game. They will have to sell so many copies just to break even.

At $60 per game, you have to sell around 850,000 units to hit $50m. GTA III sold somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 million units on the PS2 alone.

So is $50m worth bonus content? You betcha. Because if GTA faithful decide they'll buy the 360 version instead of the PS3 version to get that content, and it influences only 10% of the buyers (850k/10m)... then they've made their money back. And won market share. And stuck a thumb in Sony's eye.

You do realize that Microsoft makes nowhere NEAR $60 for each copy of the game sold, right? They make the largest chunk of profit, yes, but that money goes to the developer, distributor, the store who's shelf it's sitting on, the guy who shipped it there, advertising, etc.

They would have gotten the game anyways. They would have gotten the DLC anyways. They paid $50 million to make sure no one ELSE could have it. If you think that the difference in number of users buying the 360 version and DLC will equate to a $50 million jump from what their present install base would do...I'd have to disagree there.

Yes, I know MSFT doesn't get all the profit for each game sold. I was making a point that they'll get their money back, and could likely get market share, by doing this. And besides, sometimes you make an investment to win market share. GTA was one of the main reasons that MSFT cites for losing last gen. They're putting a checkmark next to that box with this investment. Besides, $50m to MSFT is like $50 to most of us.
