9 And LittleBigPlanet: Coincidence?

Jordan Lund notes the suspicious similarity between 9 and Sackboy.

Excerpt: "Way back in April of 2005, film-maker Shane Acker released his short film 9 which introduced us to his interesting character named… well… 9. The short went on to be nominated for an Academy Award and while it didn't win (hey, Pixar lost that year too), it did earn enough attention to be transformed into the full length feature film of the same name. You can watch the original 10 minute film here. Now I'm not accusing Sony or Media Molecule of anything, that wouldn't be fair, but I do find it somewhat curious that Media Molecule came into being in February of 2006 and the Oscar Telecast which featured 9 as a nominee aired March 5th, 2006."

1.1 - "Media Molecule came into being in March 2006."
So that is how it happens! All this time I thought to make a successful business took planning, strategy, hiring the right people and finding the perfect "Office Space."

Instead, people just walking down the street randomly walk into a building and start creating games and then BAM! a company is formed.

the quote was actually : "Media Molecule came into being in February of 2006 and the Oscar Telecast which featured 9 as a nominee aired March 5th, 2006."
so it's the other way around. Not that I necessarily agree with any of it, I haven't even read the whole article, just clarifying the quote.

Sackboy and 9 are just variants of voo-doo dolls.

They've been around for at least 100 years.

Why now? I'm not sure this article ads anything to a discussion gamers have been having for over a year - besides pointing out the obvious. I'm sure we've all thought they were similar at one point or another.

As has been previously mentioned, the 9 short-film wasn't the first time anyone ever saw a canvas doll with a zipper running down the front either. I'm sure Shane Acker has heard of the comparisons and if Sony/Media Molecule had ripped off Acker's design, then sold millions of dollars in gaming software, there's no doubt there would have been some sort of formal lawsuit.

As it is, there just isn't much to the design itself - it's what people have done with the design that makes both projects unique and totally different experiences.
