Insomniac: New Ratchet will be a 'long burner' at retail

Insomniac is confident in their newest Ratchet game, despite not charting in in October's top 10.

Yeah, anyone that expected Ratchet to do huge numbers is nuts. The game has big international appeal, and will do a million easy by the end of it's life time. These games sell HUGE once they hit the greatest hits section.

1.1 - It was out for like three whole days or something, if I recall (for October).
People need to relax :) It will easily outpace the sales of the first R & C for the PS3.

Definitely - I didn't discover R+C until Greatest Hits on the PS2 versions of the game. I think that it's one of those series that (for some reason) people want, but not at full price. Shame, cuz I'm sure that that costs Insomniac (who do SUCH an excellent job in making the R+C games) a lot of money in lost profits.

1.3 - I think most people want it a a lower price simply cuz its purely single player
Beat the campaign a couple of times and you're done. Even though I gotta say the campaign is very nice.

I don't even think it was that. The game was released 2 days ago in Australia and I imagine that is the same for Europe.

Ratchet Games always have long legs and with a community that knows how amazing those Games are, is not surprising

1.6 - I know it will continue to sell for a long time
Most great singleplayer games aren't usually bought right away, and I can wait for them to go platinum. The only exception was Uncharted 2 because Uncharted 1 was at the time the best game ever made. I know it has multiplayer but that's not what I bought it for.

Some games I can wait until they got platinum are: Ratchet and Clank, Demon's Souls, Batman, Assassin's Creed 2 and other great singleplayer experiences.

I agree. I don't have any money left to buy this game but I know I will! I love the franchise (got all the other games) so I won't miss out on this one, only I'll buy it in a couple of months, or ask it for Christmas.

Ratchet & Clank do great before they become greatest hits. To be a Greatest Hits game the game first has to sell well. But all of these games do well while not starting off with huge numbers. I doubt Sony worries about that. Most games don't sell huge numbers but of course a lot of people on the Web call games failures if they don't open with a million or more in sales. Even most 360 games don't sell that much.

Are you buying any games? That's a huge list of great games to wait to drop in price. What you should do at least is after Christmas watch the Target and Best Buy ads. Most of those games will probably be on sale in January or February for around $40.

Keep spinning Insomniac. Killzone 2 and LBP went on sale at the end of the month and still posted huge numbers. Neither of them proved to be 'long burners' either.

LOL, using fake VGChartz numbers isn't a very good way of proving a point.

2.4 - This is spin?
Explain Uncharted and Tool of destruction.

Uncharted didn't even move 40k it's first week and went on to sell 2.6 million. Tool of Destruction sold close to 70k it's first week and went on to sell 1.6 mil.

Marcus, your an idiot...

Agreed. I hope Insomniac really does something that pushes their comfort levels a bit more. Ratchet/Spyro/Resistance are all great, polished games, but none of them really do anything that hasn't been seen before.

New ips are a good thing but they dont frequently translate in massive sales (what this article is about).

R&C is one of the few platformers around, and alongside with infamous, the only two options for PS3 owners. I hope Insomniac doesnt give up on platformers.

That said. I'm a really happy owner of R&C:ACiT. Game is brilliant. Come on, who is expecting ACiT to sell that much when UC2 (the most hyped PS3 exclusive game) only reached 500+K. People want to buy yet another COD.

6 - its all good
Ratchet isnt the game that you get all excited about and try to get it early so you can brag to your friends. Its a game that you want and you will get eventually. I love Ratchet, but I can see what Insomniac is saying.

It was out for what 3 or 4 days before NPD stopped counting sales? yet it had really good numbers...

Its just good its on PS3 because playstation owners love those types of games. While PS3 seems to be pushing shooters more, i think platformers and action adventures are still the heart and soul of PlayStation.

Yeah it may be the same ole gameplay but hell, I'm not sick of it yet. The R&C franchise has been consistently fun and visually stunning since day 1 on all PS platforms.

The new Ratchet reminds me of the old spyro games. The hoover boots are the bomb. My 3 year old son is freaking addicted to this game. Anyone who wants something else besides ratchet needs to look somewhere else. I love me some ratchet.

Wow! That is cool! Is that a female lombax? The body looks feminine to me, and I don't see a tail (I learned in R&C A Crack in Time that female lombax's don't have tails!)

Next to Mario, ratchet and clank offer the best platforming experience on consoles. I actually prefer R&C to Mario, mainly because of the story and humor found in R&C games.

Yeah, and after you earn 500 skill points in A Crack in Time, you can turn on rainbow projectiles. Rainbow projectiles + RYNO V is so cool! Thousands of bullets and rockets and missiles and rainbows flying about the screen, blowing everything to hell and playing that classical music! Epic indeed.

Most Ratchet and Clank games perfom on the market like that.

Come to think of it MOST first party PS3 exclusives behave like that. They'll start with modest sales and slowly increase over time. You don't want just a flash in the pan, you want a slow roast.

I think Insomniac has taken way to much crap over the last few years from gaming journalism (such as it is) and even gamers in general, but talent is talent and these guys have it in spades. Looking forward to all future titles from them.

12.1 - I'm sure that
If a company can get 1M+ sales in a few days to a month, as opposed to hitting that tally over the course of a long shelf life, then I'm sure that they wouldn't mind.

"despite not charting in in October's top 10."

The game was released on October 27, so to enter the top 10 it had to make 156,000 sales in 4 days...

15 - The thing about games like this
Is that you could easily get just as much enjoyment out of this game by renting it. In times like these, you really have to do what's best for your dollar, and games that offer 8-12 hour single player experiences and nothing else are hard buys these days.

Most people won't go back and play the game right away (if at all) after completing it once. Uncharted 2 at least gives a multiplayer option if you choose to play it.

Exactly. You play it once or twice, collect everything and you are done. Maybe Insomniac should have included some kind of MP like how Naughty Dog did with Uncharted 2. Although R&C series is perhaps one of the last great platformer series right now IMO on any console.

15.2 - It takes longer than 8 - 12 hours to truly finish a Ratchet game...
You'd probably have to rent it for weeks depending on how much free time you have.
