What can Resistance 3 do to make up for Resistance 2's failures? (TheGamingLiberty.com)

Irish Gaming Website TheGamingLiberty.com write:

Insomniac's very own community manager James Stevenson has come out as saying that Resistance 2 was perceived as a 'failure' by the Resistance diehard's out there.

Rumours had been circulating for some time about the existence of Resistance 3. We've all seen the photos of the billboard which appears to be advertising Resistance 3 and although Insomniac and Sony haven't confirmed its legitimacy, let's face it folks, we all know Resistance 3 is a dead cert.

I know that most people preferred R1:FoM over R2, but personally, I loved R2. I loved the huge battles and the hordes of enemies.

But anyway...good article. Insomniac tends to get a lot of grief for their games because they're either "too much like the previous game" or "not enough like the previous game", but all of their games are a blast to play.

It's funny R&C FToD was criticized for having too much variety and was actually deducted points for that. Now, ACiT is being criticized for not changing it up and keeping things the same. Damn, doubled standard critics.

I've always thought Resistance had the respect such a franchise deserved so I'm surprised by all these articles that are flooding the internet (or N4G) just because Insomiac said that "was perceived as a 'failure'" not that they actually think or the game is actually a failure.

The game plays great, the Chimera are badass, GREAT weapons and the game also looks great. How the story unfolds in R2 is great, you don't get the feeling that you played a story from start to end and that in R3 you'll start all over again with whatever they come up with...it's neither a cliffhanger like in Halo 2 and tells you wait 4 years to find out how it ends (still waiting)

You don't see some cheesy scenes of extraterrestrials ligthing up cigars to humans like in ODST, when I think about great games on the PS3, Resistance is always there together with MGS4, Heavenly Sword, Folklore, Warhwak, Uncharted, etc

What all these articles mean with the franchise don't get the "respect" it deserves? that kids don't love it? nor kill their parents because they don't get to play the game nor more co-op after midnight? or maybe because there are no lunch boxes for kids with a Chimera on it? or perhaps because it's not mentioned as "evil" and a "threat" to society like GTA by some lawyer?

The game got great scores, the ones that deserved, you can't demand perfect scores for the game from all the sites either, those are for games like MGS4

But from the main sites Gamespot, Eurogamer, IGN, Gametrailers they got scores from 9 to 9.5...so I don't get it

looking forward to Resistance 3!

Although I would love to see how the story continues in the third iteration :)

I liked the first Resistance quite a bit more than the 2nd one, but I can't help but think about how awesome this series would have been if they had gone with a more realistic look like Killzone 2, rather than the cartoony art style they decided to go with.

@ Above:
I certainly wouldn't put Resistance on the same level as games lke MGS 4, Uncharted 1, Uncharted 2, Killzone 2 and the soon to be released God of War3.

1.7 - I think it'd be tough
Maybe one of the main reasons RFOM is remembered so fondly by myself & amongst others is because it's the best launch title the ps3 had.

It was exciting times for all of us who eagerly awaited getting our hands on a shiny new ps3 and standing in line out in the freezing cold (at least here in Minnesota) for hours on end on launch day.

And by the time R2 came along, we were all being spoiled by a barrage of other great titles.

But I believe Insomniac's best bet is try and make R3 more gritty and dark like RFOM to get that vibe back...possibly using a new or updated engine. And PLEASE bring back CTF!! Updated Somerset map FTW!

1.8 - I do not have high hopes for R3
I loved the first one, and the second one had great co-op but they ruined the storyline. How can you "fix" a storyline anyway? If the spotted billboard is not fake, then R3 will partially take place in New York. I thought the US was completely destroyed in R2. Also, what about other places in the world? The Cloven? The events that happened millions of years ago?

They need to add more cinematic elements and they need to make the storylines more personal. We knew little about Hale in the first resistance, and we got to know him even less in R2. How hard is it for Insomniac to get that? They didn't correct the (minor) flaws in the first one, they *aimed* to do so but failed miserably.

Not that R2 is a bad game, I enjoyed it a lot, but just not as much as RFOM. I hope R3 is neither like the original nor like 2, give us something relatively new.

How to make R3 great: Make R3 an improved R: FoM, not a game that borrows a ton from other games like R2 did.

R:FoM's health bar - It made the game REALLY suspenseful when you only has 25-50% health.

Weapon Wheel of course.

Split-Screen campaign co-op! i play through RFoM with my brother-in-law every time he visits (once a month). R2's co-op was impossible without at least 3 people so when I had a friend over we couldn't play co-op.

R2's multiplayer sucked! Grenade fest and skewed auto-aim. I especially hated how you couldn't earn XP in custom games. The one-hit games in RFoM were epic! I would play One-Hit Snipers in the Hanger for 8 hours straight! R2's matchmaking always out me up against WAY higher levels which sucked.

The Resistance feel - R2 copied from other games too much which caused it to lose the unique feel that made RFoM, RFoM. I loved RFoM's pacing how it was non-stop action which made the whole game so much fun to replay over and over but Insomniac sad they purposely changed R2's pacing because they didn't like RFoM's non-stop action WTF?!

Resistance 2 isn't a bad game by any stretch, it's just lost a lot of its uniqueness compared to Resistance 1. I personally felt detached from the story because there was no more narrative.

But IMO I still liked the combat and actual gameplay, it was still fun. But one thing they need to improve on is the boss battles. They were just too simplistic, all you had to do to defeat the leviathan was SHOOT. No clever way to take him down or anything.

What they should have done is have the leviathan on the same plain as you and you run around and shoot different limbs and parts in order to make him kneel. Then you run up on him Shadow of the Colossus style and shoot vulnerable spots and then eventually up to the head for the final blow. Something like that would have been much better.

What can Resistance 3 do?

Better story (ending was good in 2 but the story was a little more interesting in 1). Also make it look a little older. 1 felt a few years off of WW2. 2 felt like CoD4 with an occasional level with old cars.

And weapon wheel. That's it basically.

1.14 - just fix two things.
Let me hold onto more than 2 guns at a time and I'll be very happy.

Also, one thing that bugged me in R2 was that it did seemed rushed!
You'd finish a level at a certain city and yet, you felt like you didn't make a difference cause it's still a war zone and ur rushed in the helicopter for ur next objective?! WFT?!

other than that, I luved the game!
p.s those creatures that hatched out of the egg freaked the sh1t out of me lol!

Weapon wheel. Bring back the gloom and doom color palette from the 1st one. Bring the old multiplayer back from the 1st one. Narrator please. Change it up like the 1st on where you didn't have to always shoot. Bigger isn't always badder. Before, R2 was released, there was already complaints about it from hardcore players in the beta. More innovative weapons that Insomniac are known for.

Listen to your fans, Not the critics who want generic gameplay like any other shooter out there.

2.3 - They just need to return it to what Made resistance stand out.
The game was Gritty action packed and well paced, Bring back the Narration that made the first game's Story so cohesive and also present the story with cenematics like R2. bring back the weapon wheel, and the life bar hud, Keep The Co-op of R2, and keep all those huge set pieces from R2. and there is where you have a winner. I prefered the Multiplayer of 1 over 2, but loved the Online co-op of R2. i'd still love to have a buddy with me in single player though so i really Cant wait. R3 will be the sh*t, but bring it on insomniac.

Still R2 wasn't a bad game it simply more like COD than resistance.

Ignore R1's and R2's stupid xbot reviews and let insomniac od what they do best, MAKE GREAT GAMES.

Look at the flaws from R2 now compare them with R1's review complaint, R2 fixed what was 'wrong' with R1 and now everyone is complaining.

Maybe R2 was just too original.... who knows that's a problem with the PS3 being to original and not relying on a certain 1 or 2 games.

Wrong! As good as R2 was, it was actually worse than the 1st. IG made it like any other shooter. The first felt fresh and original with IG's own personality in it. R2 has Cod type gameplay and Halo like graphics.

They made Resistance: FOM which was awsome and tense.

OFF TOPIC:

I donno you may disagree with me but I think that if IW and insomniac teamed up,I think they would make the greatest fps ever, just think about it,I know it's a fantasy

Imagine the tons of pure epicness that will happen, insomniac work for ideas, aliens, the shooting mechanics(the detiction in R is better than in cod),bosses, types of weapons, lasers, shredders, zombi es etc and IW work for intensity\perfect pacing\unforgettable set pieces,online\perks\streaks,60 fps, smooth as butter controles with perfect aiming, the awesome feeling of firing a gun, animation, voiceovers and sound track

I want them to MIX

what do you guys think

4.2 - i think you're over-rating IW.
they do MP well, but that's it. their SP tends to lack a quality story and seems very much like an average FPS. (the sniper level in COD4 was a HUGE disappointment to me. just a "simon-says level" where i had to follow what the NPC told me to do) where they shine is creating a MP experience that MP players seem to love . i don't think this (MP) was necessarily the problem with R2.
plus, i don't think R2 was terrrible. it was a good game.......not just as good as R1. bring back the weapon wheel, focus on the story, and give us more "R1 type" battles (like the bus depot and defending the convoy; defending the bridge while your guys fall back....the battle leading up to the church.... oh! and that battle where you're fighting the chimera for control of the rope/plank bridge!!!! that was awesome!!! ).
i think R2 did a lot right.....and considering it's insomniac - i'm sure they'll be able to make R3 an excellent experience.........all without IW help.

and if you're reading this insomniac: GET THE STORY TO RUSSIA!!!! YOU ALLUDED TO THAT COUNTRY WAAAAAAAAAAY TOO MUCH IN R1 TO IGNORE IT COMPLETELY IN R2.........that really left me irritated. i was wanting to know much more about "the cloven"

For R3 just make the story like R1 with the British lady and mysterious feel. Also the multiplayer should be like R1 with weapon wheel,no power up bs,etc. The R2 co-op can stay because that is very fun. Other than that just improve from what i said by adding a lot more weapons that are innovative, matches, stats, etc

i personally think r2 was better than r1.. it just felt like u wer part of somthing bigger, bigger battles and such, the only letdown for me was the graphics and the AI. Besides that, everything was great :) .
For R3 i ask for a huge graphic upgrade and AI upgrade. Also make multiplayer even more rewarding and add more DLC, i know IG makes games every year so after like 2 months of release they are basically done with the game they just released... but yea my 2 cents

13 - My points
1. campaign co-op
2. MUCH better graphics
3. likable characters (again, R2 was missing these and had 'military stereotypes' instead)
4. weapon wheel which R1 adapted from R&C anyway
5. a real feeling of transformation in areas the Chimera have invaded (I found that the 'cold and snow' from R1 was reminiscent of the Red Weed from War of the Worlds)
6. Bring back the health meter. I preferred the health bar with the strategy of recharging an almost depleted section in R1 than just hiding around the corner and being 'alright' again that was in R2.
7. Don't be CoD/Halo when it isn't needed
8. Vehicle sections (the parts in R1 were brilliant fun with a friend)
9. Take the invasion to 'small places' again, the chilling feeling of villages and ports in England being invaded in R1 formed a kind of tinted nostalgia
10. Keep the radio signals from R2 in R3, those were excellently chilling
11. Don't bring the narration in again. Anyone who mentions that needs to come back is a total hypocrite. The majority of the people wanted that OUT of R1, after it got removed people, myself included didn't like it, the narrative needs an inbetween point.
12. Real skirmishes like in R1 where you ducked from plasma mines and normal mines, completing one of these sections made you feel like being involved in a little D-Day

I liked both of the Resistance games. But with all the added features of R2(coop, online split screen, and new weapons) I was not surprised by the way most websites knocked this game cause it was one of the BIG games last year. my only grip with R2 was the Titan battle that was just a run threw points instead of actually having strategy.

Bring back the Weapons wheel and allow people to have multiple weapons of the same caliber in multi-player. Maybe also add in more of a map variety for the Coop.

Bring back the online Lobby system from one, honestly its the best, text chat before games, In-game buddy list, clan support, now i can't remember if R2 has this but i don't think so.
But really one had the best lobby system ever, in-game achievments should be brought and in-game unlockables. Make the game less futuristic as it is now, it would be weird to see it go down a notch in tech, but i don't want to see it turn into a halo game. Also bring back a narrator, i like the cut scenes also but some how implement it in. Not so every scene is like that but from time to time have a voice
Get Killzone 2 devs to help, get permission to use there engine. Also bring back 1 health system. Make maps more like one also, im not digging the futuristic style it has. And man idk y but toward the end of 2, wen your like god, that would be sweet if they made a game like that lol. Felt like it was an open world style with those powers.

Oh and weapon wheel, that was the best, when i played 2 i was like wtf where the weapon wheel. Bring back classic maps also from one and 2.

20 - man, the media can't bash Uncharted 2 realistically, so
they bash Resistance? a game by INSOMNIAC, one of the hardest working, talented developers in the industry.

FACT: Resistance: Fall of Man was a GREAT launch title. and even to this day, it is still a unique, quality FPS in the face of so many "me too" war FPS titles. the alternate history setting and unique weapons give it it's identity.

FACT: Resistance 2 was a GREAT sequel. it expanded on the original premise by making the visuals better, the controls tighter, the Multi-player more involved, and the single player campaign larger in scale to match the growing threat of the Chimeran invasion. the alternate history setting and unique weapons were still there, so yes, even Resistance 2, despite it's visual changes, still had it's identity.

it's a fact that Europe looks NOTHING like the United States. especially in the 1950's which Resistance 2 takes place in.

i wasn't surprised that R2 looked different from R1 when, geographically, they are in two totally different locales with vastly different cultures and styles.

the game still felt like Resistance to me, just GRANDER.

how is that a bad thing? and what is with this wave of Insomniac hate all of a sudden?? it's like they're afraid that Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time will continue Insomniac's trend of releasing a quality game a year that they are trying to tarnish Resistance 2.

yes, Resistance 2 disappointed some fans, but it most certainly did not disappoint ALL of them. and, last i checked, it's impossible to please everyone all of the time, or even some of the time, so to somehow deduce that Resistance 2 is on the same level as truly medicore games like Turok, Blacksite, Conflict: Denied Ops, Frontlines: Fuel of War, and Legendary: The Box is just outright foolish, and an insult to what Insomniac has done this generation.

having been a relatively long time follower of their work, i see how they've grown and matured as a game developer, and truly believed that this would be the generation that they got their due, but as far as the internet is concerned, until they make a 360 game, they won't be allowed to ascend along the ranks of developers that don't try NEARLY as hard to create quality gameplay and worlds/characters, and yet they receive more praise than Insomniac.

it's an absolute shame.

we are constantly b*tching about mediocre games, and yet when truly talented developers create work, fanboyism, bias, and sour grapes lead us to tear them apart.

FACT: Bungie, Bioware, Lionhead, Kojima Productions, Sucker Punch, Insomniac, Naughty Dog, etc make GREAT games. they are amazingly talented developers. it doesn't matter WHAT platform they decide to support, their games are always quality. it's time we started acting like gamers and giving credit where it's due instead of hating on genuinely talented developers to the point where we'll start seeing less games like Resistance 2 and more games like Conflict: Denied Ops because the talented developers will have gone extinct because of the gaming media's insistence on fueling fanboy flamewars and shaping public opinion about their preferred console because they have an axe to grind with another gaming console.

it's PATHETIC. this generation is one of the saddest generations of gaming i've ever experienced when it comes to the behavior of the gaming community (specifically the fanboys and the gaming media). it's despicable.

24 - what's up with all this R2 bashing?
The only thing i didn't like about R2 was the way the story was told, the campaign bosses were a bit lame esp. the final boss, and lastly, the setting is too sci-fi for my liking(oh god please don't let resistance turn into halo).

Everything else is pretty solid, 60 player team deathmatch is an absolute blast esp. when playing splitscreen with my bro. All they need to do for the next sequel is to tighten up the story telling, bring back the weapon wheel for SP, tone down on the bright colours, lose the sci-fi thingy altogether and lastly MORE COOP PLEASE :D
