Ubi: 'There's always hope' for Splinter Cell on PS3

Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat has cryptically told VideoGamer.com "there is always hope" for PS3-owning fans of upcoming action-fest Splinter Cell: Conviction, despite the game being a "true Microsoft exclusive".

Mallat was speaking to VideoGamer.com last night after a London screening of Assassin's Creed: Lineage, the short film that fuses live actors with computer generated images.

Splinter Cell: Conviction, due out exclusively on Xbox 360 and PC in February next year, was described by Ubisoft in a "dev Q&A" as "a true Microsoft exclusive title". In the June post, the French company insisted "there are no plans to have Splinter Cell Conviction on other platforms".

1.3 - The Splinter Cell series is a great one......
and if Conviction does in fact find its way onto the PS3, and the port is handled better than Double Agent, I think it would be a welcomed addition to the PS3's already stellar lineup of games. (Wow now there's a run-on sentence for you, lol)

To me a statement like "theres always hope" doesn't say much about a change in plans. Actually it just sounds like a guy tired of the question, like a Dad being asked by his kid the possibility of something he told him being very unlikely, but because it seems he has hope and keeps asking if it possible, why kill it "theres always hope" is almost just like saying, "OK whatever you want to believe son". Also, in Ubi's case it just keeps more attention focused on the game. That said, I love this game and if ps3 only gamers get to play it later on ps3 then great for them.

Also, many of the timed exclusives that ended up on ps3 were mostly jrpg's from Japanese devs, which makes sense, since micro needs them to at least appear first on 360 in japan to have any hope of selling them on their platform day and date with ps3, some games were timed exclusive by default, ps3 hadn't launched yet or was just out, then theres Bioshock which is probably the only example I can think of a western dev game changing their minds, other than that I haven't seen much basis for western 3rd party dev games where the dev's claimed them being exclusive changing their minds, games like Gears were predicted to ps3 didn't happen http://www.computerandvideo...
L4D didn't happen
http://www.left4dead411.com...
GTAIV was long rumored to have similiar ps3 DLC, still hasn't happened
http://www.cinemablend.com/...
Mass Effect hasn't happened, in fact anything thats not 1st party to microsoft AND sony has these rumors attatched, but so far that doesn't mean it will, but again if it does thats good news for ps3 only gamers, and for microsofts benefit just means that they will need to both push out more 1st party and get more concrete exclusive 3rd party deals.

There is no such thing as a true Microsoft exclusive.

We've learned this time and time again.

- Timed exclusives disguised as "true exclusives"
- Paying for multi-plat game ads just to include only a 360 logo
- Thinking having a game on multiple platforms makes it exclusive to your platform (PC releases)
- Thinking DLC is the equivalent of an exclusive game

Those are all Microsoft tactics.

It sucks when one console start to lose its exclusives because it kinda lose the need to own it... Thanks god Sony has Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Sony Santa Monica, etc. working for them exclusively so they don't have to rely on third party that much. That's why MS is still a baby when compared to Sony or Nintendo.

X360 fans are getting screwed from left to right.

That doesn't make any sense. As a gamer, I'm not waiting 15 months for a game I'm interested in to come out on the console I own which was the case with Bioshock and Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. In both instances the additions weren't significant to justify having to pay the full retail price for a game 15 months old. If you only own a PS3, timed exclusives are disheartening and frustrating. While GTAIV, Tekken 6 and Final Fantasy XIII will be released day and date with their XBox 360 counterparts. If you own both console and you're content to wait the 12 or 15 months in hopes that the PS3 version offers more content, that's your choice but how many times has that been the case? And how many multi-console owners would? So who's really getting screwed? It seems to me fanboys don't use a lot of common sense because XBox 360 fans aren't the ones getting screwed. It's the other way around.

Edit @ disagree: Okay, I know there are a lot of PS3 fanboys here as evident by the number of disagrees my comments receive, but contrary to popular belief, I'm not an XBox 360 fanboy and try to be as pragmatic with my arguments are possible. If you're going to disagree, please at least leave a comment as to why you disagree so that we can debate the merits of each others' points. I know that's asking a lot but I'm actually hoping there are mature individuals at N4G who can make sensible arguments for their points of view.

1.14 - well StanLee,
I wouldn't say anybody's getting screwed, but I get your point, I have never really heard anybody who was really excited or interested in a game willing to wait 12-18 months for it, reviews, and sales so far haven't shown the additional content is enough to make it attractive for gamers, so obviously the people who do buy it, aren't really huge fans of the game in the first place and just sort of pick it up between exclusives they are really looking forward to, dev's have to know this and therefore aren't going to put a whole lot of extra's(bigger budget) into a late release when they know almost all of the people who really like the franchise already own it. I wouldn't say that that is getting screwed but it certainly doesn't hurt 360 platform much, because those who really got excited about the game already own a 360 or it was enough incentive for those on the fence to go out and now buy a 360, if you see a 360/pc exclusive and think its possibly going to the ps3 so, "I'll wait", you really prefer ps brand and very likey have no intention of buying a 360 anyway, thus microsoft isn't losing a sale, timed exclsives have done their job by grabbing the fence sitters attention. Seriously every game made by 3rd party dev has these rumors, less have actually been true than true so far like the ones I mentioned above, remember Ace Combat6 http://www.gamegrep.com/pic...
hasn't happened either, I think if its safe to say a Japanese jrpg is almost a given that it will eventually put be put it on ps3, because quite frankly even the worst jrpg's will make a profit on ps3 in japan.

Thanks a lot for your comment and I do agree with you. I always have a very simple way of looking at timed-exclusivity; Mass Effect 2 will be released in January on the XBox 360 and PC. Those who own an XBox 360 can pick up the game if interested, those who own a PC that can run Mass Effect 2 can pick up the game if interested and those console owners who own both an XBox 360 and PS3 can pick up the game if interested. The only ones who cannot and those persons who only own a PS3 and have an interest in the game. If the game is eventually released 12 or 15 months later on the PS3, the only one who will care are fanboys. By then those who had played and enjoyed the game would have moved on.

i agree with you. but those of us who only own one console HAVE to wait. due to the fact of MS paying for timed exclusives instead of making their own games.

only proving my point that MS could care less about GAMERS.

so i wait, cause sony actually cares and puts out games ALL year. so it's not like i'm actually waiting. when they release i'll buy them.

i see your point about not having enough content to get it. but if you don't have it and you want it, it doesn't matter how much more content it has. i think it should be 10 bucks cheaper but what ever.

BUT ninja guiden had PLENTY of extra content to warrent a 60 dollar price tag.

i think 3rd party timed exclusives are retarded and it only hurts gamers. and gives fanboys "bait"

"If the game is eventually released 12 or 15 months later on the PS3, the only one who will care are fanboys. By then those who had played and enjoyed the game would have moved on."

I disagree. There are single console owners there who are not fanboys, who would still enjoy the title. For example, NG2 was not enough to get me to buy a 360, but I purchased and enjoy the PS3 edition. I'm not making a stink about it on message boards, because I didn't spend all this time "waiting" for it. I had so much else to play, it was just another game on the list. Why do some people treat it like during a "waiting period" for a title, there is NO OTHER GAME in existence? I find that a bit silly.

You know what you're right. I'm sure a lot of PS3 owners who only own that console will enjoy the game if/when it eventually makes its way to that platform. What I should have said is; "Of those who have played the game, the only ones who will care if it's eventually released 12 to 15 months later on the PS3, are fanboys."

But with the tinted stain of Microsoft and their silly exclusive strategies on this game, I have no interest in it. In fact, the exclusivity of it all makes me glad it never hit my radar. Besides, this version of Sam is just plain dumb. I say bring back the old style and get back to the way things used to be for this series.

Somebody that is tired of the question would not make a remark that encourages even more, more fevered questions on the matter.

Someone tired of the aggravation would not answer the question in a manner that quadruples the current level of aggravation.

A person that answers the question in that manner is someone toying with the idea and considering what the actual interest and possible revenue would be on such an endeavor.

360 fans can pull their hair out if they like but that comment didn't close the door. Rather he kicked the door wide open and invited even more speculation. If he doesn't recant himself in the next 72 hours then the 360/PC title is in serious consideration for the PS3.

GRAW was garbage. Even on the 360. The damn ps3 version didn't even have voice chat. Ive been a ps3 owner since day one and I remember who screwed me the most in 06 and 07. Ubisoft has the biggest collection of garbage on the ps3. Rainbow six vegas and its bullet lag and connection issues, Graw and its no voice chat, crappy splinter cell ports (maybe its just that it was a crappy game?), I could go on but Im done with Ubi.
