PS3Center: What Resistance 3 Needs

Dustin @ PS3Center writes:
If you haven't already seen it, a Resistance 3 billboard has been spotted on a movie set recently. This of course gets many people excited as the gameis finally on the way, but hopefully this means changes to make it the best gamer ever? Resistance 2 didn't do as well as Resistance Fall of Man, many people didn't like the changes, so here is what we want to see in Resistance 3.

Resistance 2 was a great game, but I feel like Insomniac took the generic shooter route with it. Hopefully they go back to the roots with R3.

1.1 - being that in this generation story seems to be as important as gameplay
RFoM was incredible with a deep story that you just wanted to know more..

R2 felt so shallow compared to R1, no explanation to many, many things that didn't make sense in part 1.. i loved the brown atmosphere in part 1 as well.. part 2 was waay too colorful.. and Nathan Hale didn't feel like this awesome character anymore.. felt like just a regular and even weak guy..

Please insomniac.. RFoM was amazing, there is NO SHAME at all in going back to the game's roots..

imo weapon wheel and health packs are last gen and should not be in R3..

I want: a incredible Sci-Fi-game with massively scripted Action sequences. With epic battles on earth or possibly on the enemy planet! They should look at independence day, war of the worlds and star wars.. I just want a sci-fi-uncharted2 ^^.

Resistance 2 was a good game. Resistance: Fall of Man was a great game. I love the series. PS3 owners should try both. I highly recommend it.

I hope Resistance 3 will include Nathan Drake as the ultimate-Chimera-bad-ass and we get a massive boss fight againt him. Also hope that Insomniac Games returns with an epic Resistance 3 that in storytelling and gameplay will rival the first game in the series.

By the way, I will surely support Insomniac Games by buying Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time this year too.

1.5 - I still think that Retribution is the best in the series.
But I think Insomniac did every well with R2. As developers, they seem to be getting a better grasp of how a FPS should play. I'm sure they have heard all the complaints about R2 and made the necessary changes.

Unfortunately, Insomniac caved and tried to make Resistance 2 like all the other generic shooters instead of embracing what made Resistance different. It didn't work and it pissed off the people that loved the first Resistance. They need to get rid of the crappy storytelling over the radio and bring back the narration. While they're at it they better include Co-op campaign, the weapon wheel and vehicles. Without them its just another generic above average shooter.

What Resistance 3 needs is a better single player experience with a good story. Insomniac got Multiplayer down so they don't have to worry about that.

I just want the Sp Campaign to be better this time around, Resistance:FOM had a better SP along with story and with resistance 2 the story and interest fell apart. But I liked the ending though. I think for the next one I hope they keep Nathan as the main protagonist (even though he...)

Yeah... I miss the 1951 setting. I really liked how the human resistance forces really looked helpless against the Chimerans back in RFoM. They used archaic weapons, wore old army clothes, cheap helmets and apparel. In R2 everything seemingly jumped to the modern era, all the retro things present in the game seemed to have been flushed out because the game really became a generic sci-fi shooter. And yeah, I have to agree with R2 being really colorful.

R2 is good nonetheless, but Insomniac have to revert to the same formula which set RFoM apart from other shooter. And I hope they could bring back offline campaign split-screen coop.

Resistance 2 is my second favourite console FPS on PS3. Not because of the singleplayer, although this was still pretty good if you ask me, but the multiplayer - It is awesome, especially the online co-op.

What they need to do:
New types of epically huge enemies
Improved graphics - hopefully up to around Killzone 2 level if not better
Keep and expand on the online co-op
Mod'able weapons (add scopes, stabilisers, sepressors etc)
Improved AI - make them value their lives more, and work together to flank you, lay down supressing fire etc

There are more things they could do, but thats a start.

1.11 - in terms of story,
I think many fans of the series prefer the narration style in R:FOM than R2 and so do I! Insomniac took what were making R:FOM a great, unique game with the absence of regenerative health bar and weapons wheel and most importantly the narrative story! the story of R2 is OK but not as great as R:FOM and eventhough bigger bosses are also featured in R2, they feel too scripted thus taking away the tense and feel of accomplishment for beating them!

I also don't like the 1-hit kill invisible pricks in R2! they feel cheap! I would rather have them acts like the flying bots that shoot grenades in inFAMOUS - they fly around haunting and shooting at you with unpredictable patterns and cloak themselves (need to zap them to make them visible again) thus making them annoying but more fun to beat!

but after all that, the ending of R2 is EPIC! makes you wonder how will they advance the story from that point! I can't wait for R3 and I hope they will combine the great things from R:FOM and R2 to make the ultimate Resistance experience in Resistance 3.

Resistance 1 had much much better online that R2, because it made more sense. In R2, the chimera and Humans were exactly the same, they could use any perk they wanted, it ruined the uniqueness of Resistance. Just go back to R1 online.

Yeah now that you mention it...

But I really liked the feel of FOM. It really set itself apart from other shooters with it's environments and graphical style.

It just seems like R2 is a completely different game.

2.3 - Well, it is a completely different game.
But I think anyone who has played both understands what you mean. I loved the scale of R2 but I think it lost some of it's grittiness. It's kind of the same thing that happened to Gears of War 2.

I think that when they went to these more epic set pieces, they lost the more intimate close-quarters combat of the first.

I think a return to the grit for R3 would be great. And adding a little Killzone heaviness wouldn't hurt either.

I really don't understand why everybody craps on R2. I mean, the critics (for the most part) liked it better than RFOM (it has a higher metacritic than RFOM anyway). But all the gamers I talk to take a dump on R2 all the time. I just don't get it. I'm with the critics on this one. Both games were good, but R2 is my preference. The co-op mode was so addictive, and the graphics were a huge improvement. I know that it was popular for a while to compare the graphics to Gears 2 and make fun of R2, but I never understood that. I think R2 had easily the best graphics of 2008. I really do believe that. It was absolutely gorgeous, particularly the Idaho and Chicago levels. That's my opinion. Everybody seems to disagree, but I don't get why.

Do less and make it more. R2 should have toned down its size considering the development time. Great singleplayer comes first - add what you can after.

R2 is a good game. However to most fans it was too different from what made the first great. It was not the graphics or MP. It was simply the campaign.

For me personally it was the removal of the weapon wheel and the narrator which affected the story choesion quite a bit.

One of the best thing about R1 were the weapons. I enjoyed so much having access to them when ever i wanted in R1. They were freaking cool. Also I.G should have never ditched the narrator. With the narrator in R1 the story was coheisive and it made perfect sense what was going on. With R2 the story was told through the comms between the team members while fighting for their lives. Most of the time i wasn't listening because i was too busy trying to survive. It made the story disjointed which is a shame because it has an amazing story.

Also Hale was much better being a silent hero. It was a bit weird with him talking so much more in R2 when in R1 he never said much.Again this has to do with the absent narrator.

I really do hope I.G return to R1 roots in R3. They should not listen to idiots that didin't like R1 because it was too brown, or lacked gore, or the pacing was too slow compare to other tirigger happy games like Gears. That was the problem. I.G tired too much to be like other shooters. They should have known better in that 3.5 million people bought R1 and most loved it for being a unigue shooter from others.

5 - What Resistance 3 Needs
Seriously. What they need is to embrace that M rating. Have that scene where the girl is trying to seduce me thus getting naked only to start changing into a beast, and the only way to kill her is to shoot off both of her alien nipples while she attacks like a savage.

We both know that would be classic so hit agree :)

What i missed in R2 was the crazy weapons that the first one had the Splitter was my favorite gun in R1 I felt the weapons in R2 was rushed out in development. So hopefully R3 will have crazy/fun weapons to use, plus I miss the ability to carry all weapons I mean your up against an entire army of Chimera atleast give us the ability to use more than a crappy Carbine or Bullseye. Plus I miss the GreyJacks you know the tall skinny Chimera that would pummel you into the ground.

R2 was a good game. i wasnt blown away by it though. the guns felt really weak. i havent touched the game in months.

im probably gonna skip on R3 unless insomniac does something really amazing with it. with games like killzone 2 and uncharted 2, then MAG and possibly Kilzone 3 on the way, R3 will have its work cut out for it.

skip on R3? That sucks to hear. Resistance is one of PS3's flagship franchises and for someone to abandon it because other PS3 exclusives that were made after R2 are better. But hey Im sure 360 fans are the same way when they talk about their Halo games, Gears of Wars etc.

R2 improved on FOM in everyway, but lost its personality. Tbh, FOM didn't have a fantastic story. It was explained better through narration, but I think they both were about equal.

IMO R:FOM's single player campaign was way better than R2's. It's honesty one of the best single player experiences I have ever had in a game. The fear factor in some of the levels was so intense, especially the northern command bunker level.

WOW when R2 came out everyone was praising it. Yeah better games came out after it but that doesn't mean R2 was bad. PS3Center.net gave the game a 9.5!!!!!!! And this article seems like they didn't like anything about R2 lol. WOW. Yeah Insomniac needs to improve with R3, all franchises aim to improve for there next game. I say chill guys R2 was a beautiful made game, its just Killzone 2, Uncharted 2 and many others that were released after R2 were better, which is understandable

is it did its job as a shooter. to me it just felt meh even when it first came out. it just didnt feel special. i cant really explain what it is. i couldnt get into the online. i only spent about 10 hours with it compared to killzone 2's 200 hours.

I think Resistance single player/story was great, if anything on par with the Halos, Killzones etc. FPS's arent well known for there single player stories, people always tend to be disappointed in the end (Halo 2/3) plus most if not all FPS's are very short. Resistance brought a great story and I think for R3 they'll bring a much cooler and much needed hero

19 - Simple
What R3 needs is to be more like the original R1. They can keep the addictive amazing fun co-op from R2 though. R2 disappointed in story,it needed the British lady like part 1 and some of the directions it took was bad. The multiplayer sucked because everyone spammed the annoying electric powers and they tried to make it like cod 4. They need the story similar to R1 and go back to the R1 muiltiplayer. They just need to do that and improve from there. Add a lot more weapons that are creative, etc

21 - Resistance 2 was a big disappointment.
I sold it right after i completed it. The story was weak, i didn't get attached to any of the characters (who pretty much looked like the main character) and the graphics were pretty bad too. Though some sections looked brilliant (like the background of San Francisco being obliterated) I could easily find many other sections with absolutely no polish.

The glitches were killer, too. I actually lost a boss fight because a turret from across the level was able to see me through the various walls and shoot at me. Insomniac had a lot of ambition, but they need to slow down their release dates and actually put out a polished sequel this time around.

i hope hale remains dead, but if for some reason he is not somebody should sew his mouth shut because as soon as he started talking in r2 i stopped liking him as a charecter. he wasn't funny and was just a pain. game charecters shouldnt talk unless they have a well thought out personality, like nathan drake. he is the best charecter in any game funny, heroic, and he is somebody everybody can relate to (he is an everyman)
