Joystiq: Quantum Theory Hands-On

Aping a popular franchise's mechanics and style may be seen as a safe business proposition, but in terms of critical evaluation, the copy-cat game is likely to face stricter judgment. After all, if you're going to copy the good stuff, you've got to get it right.

Tecmo's PlayStation 3 exclusive, Quantum Theory (just Quantum outside of Japan), certainly succeeds in evoking memories of Gears of War -- at least, if you remember Epic's shooter being a technically unsound and completely unappealing disaster.

An amusing preview, hopefully they fix some of the issues before the game get's released.

I don't know why but this game sort of reminds me of Ninja Blade, even though one is an hack and slash and the other a shooter.

There's time to fix the game yet and far from criticizing it for copying Gears( a great game but one built entirely around the cover system Epic and Cliffy stole from Kill/Switch)people should just point out what they feel is both good and what's lacking here.

I think the enviroments are looking a lot better than they were and that most of it's issues are with the kind of things that will get polished out. They won't ship with the kind of tech issues it has now, that's for sure AND PS3 exclusives very often get a nig boost in the GX dept in the last few moths polishing pre release anyway.

If they make enough use of the moving enviroment and the co-op style moves with the two characters while smoothing out the bumps it could still be a very good game which fills a glaring whole in the PS3 library. I'm not expecting a Gears killer but doubt bery highly that the game won't be considerably better at release-some parts were already looking better than it does now a while back so I'm guessing a lot of it is gettinga FPS they're happy with all thriough the game and other decisions like that so I'm, not too worried about it just yet.

Anyway, better [problems now than when they can't change anything.

Gears didn't steal anything and if thats the case make sure you apply that to any of your favorite things in which what you're saying pertains to. Gears USES the cover system in which it has expanded on to become what I think with uncertainty is the best one out there.

From http://www.gamespot.com/new...

"Bleszinski said the seeds of Gears of War were sown by three titles."... "The second game was Namco's 2004 shooter kill.switch. Though it had much less success critically or financially than Resident Evil 4, Bleszinski felt "it had the best cover system at that time." He felt that incorporating a similar cover system would really change the pace of Gears and set it apart from other shooters."

So Gears copied Kill Switch's cover system. Wait for Quantum Theory to come out and take it for what it is. If calling other games copy-cats make people feel better about themselves, then whatever. But don't cry when your beloved games have been shown to have taken inspiration or copied aspects from other games, when you think they're so original and the best games ever.
