12-year-old Boy Breaks Guitar Hero Record

A 12-year-old Washington state boy may make his way into the Guinness Book of World Records. He did it by playing the popular video game "Guitar Hero."

Watch his nimble fingers move on the fretboard. You may be surprised they belong to a 12-year-old boy.

Dylan Phifer says "I never expected to break a world record on something that is kind of important. maybe something kinda small but not this big." In the video gaming world, Dylan Phifer of Everett has reached rock star status.

Andrew McGillivray, who works at Game Crazy, says "he's incredible. I've never seen anyone play guitar hero like him, it just baffles me how good he is."

Maybe he should play a real instrument.

He tried. From the article:

***But in case you think Dylan's talents might transfer over to a real guitar, think again.

Dylan says "I tried it. I just couldn't get it for my life. There are all these strings on it and you have to strum and hit notes."***

You know musicians that have complained about the game are going to groan at this, but at least the kid tried the instrument out. Many kids would never have picked up instruments to try them out without Guitar Hero and similar games.

The sad part of the interview was how he considered this a 'big thing' in his life. I'm a gamer and it would be cool to be the best at something in a game, but it would be far from a 'big thing' in my life.

I was 12, playing tons of sports with tons of friends and even some D&D. To me, that's bigger than wasting hours in front of the TV mastering a game rather than actually being active during my childhood.

I'm not saying he didn't accomplish something, but to say that this is a 'big' thing in his life, not just now, but for the rest of it was his inference, is sad.

LorD - I'll answer for you with my own personal story. When I was 12, I had already been playing music for several years, could sight read music, & played in the school band. Those are skills that blossomed as I grew older, and have given me a lifetime of enjoyment. By the time I was a teenager, I was an accomplished guitar player, and played in metal bands. I guarantee you it required a lot more discipline, skill, and most importantly intelligence than being the best at a video game.

Now I am not saying playing games is bad thing. But it is nothing to hang your hat on. I would think even a kid playing little league, who is not very good at baseball is doing something more impressive than what this kid did.

Anyone who becomes the best at anything clearly has more skill, discipline and talent than anyone else intelligence has nothing whatso ever to do with either guitar playing or sport, clearly you think you have achieved something more than he has, but he is the one being recognise for achievement by the world for being the best.

I used to play football every day played for teams was quite good but i'd never dream of turning round and saying football took more skill than a world record holder at anything as they can prove they are the best where as your just another guitar player like millions of others

nirwanda - You are trying to imply that it takes the same intelligence to be good at Guitar hero as studying music? I don't know what to say to you, other than I hope all that game playing gives you a huge IQ boost.

I don't mind coming accorss as arrogant, because I also play games as well as play music. I can speak from experience on both fronts. I gaurantee you the discipline is much more challenging at playing a real instrument. You are not being rewarded with a fun experience most of the time when you are training as a musician. It is more about sacrafice, and not instant gratification like playing a game. To achive great skill, you must work really hard without gratification most of the time. But the payoff is immensely more rewarding when you can share that skill you learned in front of an audience, and they have a great time hearing your music. That is why it enriches your soul tremendously more than merely being recognized as getting the high score in a video game, which is a fleeting thing.

Being recognized as the best at something, is actually offpoint to what I am talking about. It is a shallow thing compared to a deeper life experience of doing something that can be shared with others outside your house, away from your couch & TV set.

Here's a light hearted new report to fill some time otherwise used to show picture and videos from Iraq and Afganistan where 1,000's of innocent people and equally innocent soldier die... but you don't want to look over there just in-case you question more than

'Is a FREE health service fair?'

damn that kids good lol. GH can be really F'ing hard. I should post a video, I play that game the most unorthodox way...I CANNOT for the life of me get hammer ons and all that stuff. I literally play every note and strum every time. I didn't even know any different for a very long time. Lol I always amazed people my fingers moved so quickly...I can beat through the fire and flames on expert that way, don't ask me how it made my fingers hurt haha.

16 - This is a garbage article with no details or specifics on their claim
Was this a spam article? "Firstcoastnews.com" ?

They don't cite any specifics about the claim to be the best. Guitar Hero records are nothing new and rather well known; with millions of players, anyone can claim to be the best.

But only guys like Danny "GuitarHeroPhenom" Johnson and Chris "iamchris4life" Chike have proven to be the best by winning endless competitions and posting videos of their skills and being on national TV several times.

At the very least, whoever wrote the article doesn't know the first thing about Guitar Hero. To even suggest the idea that being good at Guitar Hero would somehow make this boy able to play a real guitar, shows how utterly clueless this reporter really is.

I don't think there's a single GH player out there who thinks his GH skills translate directly to a real guitar. But there seems to be an endless amount of ignorant non-GH players who think that.

20 - That's great but....
He should spend more of his time learning to play a REAL guitar than a plastic video game guitar. If his fingers are so nimble he should really learn how to master the real thing. That skill is 100000x more valuable than playing guitar hero.
