Far Cry 2 Under-Rated?

When I went to my local EB Games a couple of weeks ago I was looking for a game that would last me a while or at least until the holiday game release madness that is soon to come upon us. While I was there I picked up Far Cry 2 for a great price. I had been wanting to buy Far Cry 2 for a while now, but seeing the bad reviews of the game from when it was released I didn't bother buying.

Far Cry 2 was awesome for the first maybe 10 hours. After that, the driving gets extremely boring and tedious, the enemies are annoying because you can't get from point A to point B without running into a group of angry Africans, even if you're working for their faction.

this game sucked. Exploring the open, 20 sq. mile world was boring because theres nothing out there except diamonds, animals, and grass/trees.

Too much driving, and no fast travel unless you travel a huge distance to get to the bus stops, which almost defeated the purpose.

Exploration was limited because you couldnt climb on top of rocky formations due to invisible walls everywhere. So much for getting a better sniper spot right?

Horrible story, and no feral/predator abilities like the first Far Cry. It was awesome to have animal-like powers like smelling people, clawing them with your fists, and jumping really far and still be running around with guns and driving vehicles.

Far Cry 2 took away all of that, and made it boring. The only good thing that came out of this game was an awesome map editor, but Far Cry Instincts Predator for the 360(a Re-release of the first game) had the same editor, Far Cry 2's just has more features.

@shepherd

The travel to the bus stops so that you could fast travel was horrible. I agree. And probably ruined the game for me (well, that and the game ending bug I found right after opening up the southern part of the map. Needless to say, I never finished the game.)

I understand the need to create a "living world" but adding things like instant fast travel, a la Oblivion or Fallout, won't take too much away from the feel of the game.

But one correction on your post. The original Far Cry (PC Only) didn't have the feral abilities. It was more like Far Cry 2 in that it was a more reality based shooter--except for the introduction of the genetic mutations towards the end of the game.

The feral abilities didn't show up until Far Cry: Instincts for the original Xbox.

The story wasn't anything special. What was worth every penny (for the rent, at least) was the Map Editor. I had loads of fun making and downloading maps.

I just wish they would have had an option that stated when you completely obliterate a checkpoint no bad guys return and rebuild the place for 10 days. Instead I could drive up the road a few hundred meters and return and they had transported down from their starship. It gets old quick. The weapons degrading while novel is wholly unrealistic in a game that was trying to pimp realism.

I agree Panda, the faction thing really got on my nerves, but not as much as the fast respawning enemies.

With that said, planning and executing assaults on enemy bases in the middle of the night gave a certain thrill.

Far Cry 2 is not a game you can sit down and play like a normal fps, because it's simply not fun that way.
You have to know how to play the game to enjoy it. It may sound a bit silly, but that's how I eventually figured out how to get the most out of the game: Dodging patrols, finding shortcuts, exploring and scouting the mission to find the optimal plan of action, ect.
When you stop rushing, it actually becomes more fun. Less hectic and more elaborate. Something that to me sounds like the makings of a great game.

As for the story, I quite liked the dark political undertone and ideas. Something that does very much represent, to some degree, the situation of many 3rd world countries in africa.
If you played through the game without at some point or another recflect upon this, and say the story is crap. Then maybe this game was not meant for you.

This game had a great feel to it. I only wish that there weren't respawning checkpoints. The online portion was solid.

I re-created Foxhunt from Socom 2 on the map editor. Its a shame that there aren't more people online for this game.

4 - I Wouldn't Say it Was Underrated
I had the same problem with Far Cry 2 that I had with Assassin's Creed the year before: I loved the first couple of hours then it's just the same missions over and over. Though to be fair FC2 did have more area to explore and the occasional unique mission to undertake. Either way I thought it was a decent game that deserved most of the reviews it initially got. If you find it in a bargain bin for $20 or less then absolutely go for it.

Agree completely. This game isn't underrated, it was actually ok, however it should be known that there's essentially 3 types of missions in the game which ran along side the main story (Cell Tower/Assassination missions, Destroy the Convoy missions, Buddy missions) - and after the first one or two missions its quickly apparent that the formula is rinse/repeat. No doubt the game LOOKed great, and IMO had the repeating junk been reduced a little it would have flowed a little better. It was artificially long. The multiplayer was a joke. With such an awesome map editor capability in the product, it was disappointing the way multiplayer felt - almost like you're trodding around in quicksand requiring entire clips to take an enemy down. $20 or less, pick it up and venture around - the Savannah and a couple missions are worth seeing for that.

Yeah I forgot about the lousy multiplayer. Then again this game released shortly before CoD5. Talk about bad timing for any game with a multiplayer component. I never did play with the level editor so I can't much attest to it's quality but I'm all for any kind of user generated content. Maybe it's something Ubi will expand on in future shooters they release.

Everyone seems to agree, after playing for the first few hours, you've pretty much played the whole game.

I actually played for a good 8-10 hours before I realized how boring it really is. I didn't want to waste my rental, but it was just meh.

4.4 - Here is my opinion
I found the story to be boring and forgettable. Missions got tiring quickly after 50% of the game.

Game mechanics were awesome. It was realistic, it allowed you to be a stalker, and was one of the few games that made it feel rewarding to actually plan out your attacks without boring you with meticulous technical details of execution.

But the best thing the game had above any and every other game is the environment. There isn't a game with an environment that's more alive. I don't know any other game that makes it fun to snipe from bushes or go through buildings/corridors shooting in CQC. You can actually hide in bushes. This goes from single campaign to online play. The world/environment is so amazing, I can't get over it. I've played every other AAA game on both 360 and PS3 but none of them offer the same dynamic environment (even if they offer better gameplay or weapons).

The biggest fault in the game was Ubisoft's lazy developing skills. The game remained buggy for almost a year (single player) and the online play still kicks out players at the end of every 3 games you play. Before the recent patch, everyone would get kicked out of the lobby at the end of every game. I personally think Ubisoft was way too lazy. They had a great environment, great world, great mechanics. They destroyed the game with stupid bugs and a non-compelling plot. If the story was more interesting, the open spaces a little smaller, more bus stops, and A LOT LESS BUGGY, the game would have had a strong online community easily.

Trophies took way to long to unlock

Game was repetitive, mission after mission.
While the game tracked time of day nicely, night, day, game save by going to a hut --- it got repetitive really quickly.

Driving sequences were way too long

My biggest problem was that there's virtually no story, I had no idea why I was going around shooting guys other than to complete a mission.

Also, the characters are one-dimensional – I don't give a shít about them. And why do they look like creepy-ass zombies when they're injured?

And why am I always blowing up my own Jeep? Damn that's annoying!

The only reason I might play this game again is to try the experiment where you get one life. No reloading. Play it like real life. That'd be pretty cool. With my luck I'd just burn myself to death in a grass fire started by the blowback from my rocket launcher.

far cry 2 totally sucked
come on, the missions were all the same till the end of the game. go
the world is a strong point, really well made, but come on, no fckin fast travel? those bus stops were a joke and so was the excessive driving.
i think it's WAY overrated and repetitive, just like 80% of ubisoft's games
assassins creed, naruto: rise of a ninja and the last prince of persia comes to mind

I liked this game. The combat was fun, so even though a lot of missions were similar, it is all the kind of stuff I like to do in a fps game. The one thing that was annoying after a while is the armed checkpoints every few feet. If only they had more fast travel options, and militia didn't respawn within minutes after clearing a checkpoint, this game would have been better.

Its the same issue with every open world game Ubisoft has released in this gen. Great graphics and beautiful sandbox world but nothing to do in it. Yes i am looking at you AC, PoP and FC2.
Plus far cry 2 could have been released under any name, it had nothing to do with original far cry or anything. The game bored me to death.

Ubisoft's games are always pretty with interesting and engaging stories but lacking in gameplay.

I enjoyed both PoP & AC because i have a thing for games with great stories. But as for Farcry2, the story sucks and it has a 10hr gameplay stretched to 20+hrs.

13 - FC 2 had good points and bad points.
I'll totally buy FC3 6 months after release, considering it took them 6 months to fix the save/load glitch in FC2.

FC 2 was fun though. I enjoyed stalking around at night with silenced weapons picking off stragglers on my way through the missions.

I didn't know you could catch malaria that fast.

And the ending sucked ass IMO.

I for one loved it, the first playthrough i was expecting more action, but the driving to different places just adds to the open world feel of the game, i enjoyed the game alot more on the second and third playthrough

and when your playing at 1680*1050 max settings for everything and 8*aa it's damn nice driving scenery anyway

The gameplay was awesome, and the weapon upgrades made the game so much fun. The realistic story was another one of the game's good points.

i can understand why people were bored, but the story was good in my opinion. Finding all the jackal tapes and the extra tapes from the bonus mission added alot to the game, the graphics are truly amazing and the second best graphics of any pc games i've played (counting crysis and crysis warhead together as one). The weapon customisation added alot to the replayability....i never used a grenade launcher until me third playthrough....how foolish i was, that gun OWNS!

Farcry2 was by no means a bad game, by my standards it was actually pretty good, but with a little more polish, time, and effort it could have made it Fantastic, there was potential for true greatness here people.

As it stands it's just a fairly competent shooter with current gen graphics!

The classic case of beauty without brains. Man as most of the above comments have said, it was damn repetitive. Dont know why they needed to make such a huge map with every junction filled with respawining enemies. I mean the actual game might have taken 8-10 hours to finish and it would have been ok but they added 12-15 hours of driving or bus rides which did not do good for the longeivity of the game rather made it tiresome and boring.

ANd dont even mention the Godawful MP. I recently tried it again after borrowing the game and made myself play go get one of the achievements but all for what? The controls were like you were holding a canon, which while turning suddenly turns into plastic gun so you over shoot the target. It was like driving a car at full speed and then suddenly oversteering and then understeering to make it straight. ALso just random kick out of game or lobby and u end up on the main title screen so you need to navi back to MP tab... Jeezus talk about lazy devs..

It wasnt the graphics, it wasn't the gameplay.

For me it was the characters, i could not careless about them, the most important thing in a game is characters, if you can't relate or don't like the look of, you won't get hooked.

And i think that's a main reason it got boring.

For everyone that thinks 30hours of gameplay = a great game. It does not.

I'd rather 10hours of Uncharted. Because it's quality time spent.

It is a good game with great mechanics. MP and it's map editor on the consoles are awesome if you have the patience and imagination to be creative. Seems to me the only people I've come across that didn't like it just plain sucked at playing it which is usually the ADHD COD kids that just want instant gratification and not enjoy the hunt of stalking prey. Just because it doesn't have the twitch auto aiming controls where you actually have to use the sights and not get easy kills with cheesy crosshairs these kids hate on it. For me I like COD FC2 KZ2 and most all other shooters but that's because I have patience to adjust to each of them.

Is one of those few games where, you have to input a lot of the purpouse of it.

The only story really is you ( as a gamer ) wanting to survive, get weapons and get through the story.

The story is just an excuse to give a context for the open world.

I found the game very fun, and my only draw back is YES, it does get repetative, especially after the 2nd play through, but thats when you need to get creative.

And if anything, it has one of the most beautiful open worlds ever made =) beautifuly crafted game, just unfortunately a little too...over streched =)

No underrated though, it got the grade it deserves as a over all game. Its just a personal favorite =) Its a "either love or hate" game IMO

like many open world games this gen, on a technical level it was impressive.

I am sorry, but i thought it looked way better then any unreal crap i have seen. where it failed is like most other open world games, content.

I remember i defended this game at first when it came out, but now..

The story was rubbish. ya it didn't make sense even when your working for one group, they will still attack you anytime your driving. You clear a post out and drive by it 5 min later and they are back.

They seemed to be able to see you a mile away, even when your hiding in a bush or something. I didn't feel you could plan anything with the attacks. you could plan who your first target was, but once you fired the first shot that was pritty much it. it took a miracle to loose them.

when i finally finished the game i could not believe it, one of the worst endings and least rewarding i have played in a long time.

The only positive thing i had to say about the game is the graphics. for the size of the open world and with the lighting etc etc.. in my mind it was very impressive and i got the feeling there was a lot more to be got out of both consoles then we have seen so far. however, great graphics at the expense of great game play will still lead to a crap game. thats why games like halo etc are so successful and played by so many. You can keep the graphics, i would take gameplay any day of the week.

Man, i really wanted to like the hell out of this game. My dad got it for my b-day at $30 and now i can see why... all the things i wanted to say was pretty much already said here and i HIGHLEY agree. Sure there was some awesome things about the game like healing yourself in real time, gameplay was a mixed bag of shi* and flowers, guns were cool, the grahpics was awesome on my eyes but ive been saying this ever since i started gameing and im going to say it again, grahpics do not make a game!

Well i still want to finish it still for some reason. I never did, but one of these days when i got nouthing to play then ill give it a go ahead on more time.
