Crave Preview: Sony's 3D PlayStation 3: Hands-on photos
37
Crave:
We heard Sony was showing off a 3D PlayStation 3 here at IFA. Curious, we headed to the enormous Sony stand where we discovered a young boy -- DualShock controller in-hand, 3D glasses mounted on his visibly excited face -- playing the PS3's Wipeout racing game on a massive 3D television.

"But over the following two or three years, we were told, it wants to build the picture-processing technology into the PlayStation itself. That way, gamers will be able to enjoy 3D gaming on any high-def telly"
Interesting, I know many people are put off by having to buy a new TV so that would be fantastic. I wonder if it will require a hardware revision or whether it could be done purely through software.

I'm one of the ones put off. I don't see 3D tv's taking off any time soon. I was at Fry's Electronics last month and got to check out a 3D monitor. It was not good. It made you sick.

1.2 - If it was through software
I would hazard a guess and say that current games wouldn't run on it. Most games are using the PS3 as best as the developers can to get the best quality they can, by stamping in a post-processing effect this would cause problems.
An extra piece of hardware seems more likely

What are you talking about @hitthegspot? @Fishy Fingers is stating a good point about future PS3's supporting the 3D technology through software or hardware revision and then you come with that nonsense? XD
But yeah, I agree. These 3D tv's makes me sick. =(

At Fry's they had a 17" PC monitor set up with a 3D version of a WOW type game. You have to put on glasses. It did not look good, it made you sick. I don't know if it was the motion, the glasses, or what, but it was not playable. I hope Sony does it right.

"At the end of 2010, Sony plans to release this 3D Bravia for use with its games console. But over the following two or three years, we were told, it wants to build the picture-processing technology into the PlayStation itself. That way, gamers will be able to enjoy 3D gaming on any high-def telly. Plans to incorporate the system into Blu-ray players, and even Vaio laptops, also exist."
if its built into the ps3 itself It will work with any HDTV!!!!!

I wouldn't mind buying a new HDTV just for this, I have plans for the one I have now to go into my bedroom.
Curious to see how much more these 3D capable Bravias will cost.
Good to see they want to expand this to any t.v instead of just their brand.

1.8 - Actualy there is a chance people will get sick...
from watching 3D TV, or 3D Movies. It has to do with how our eyes focus on real world objects. When you look at an object in the real world your eyes focus on a given point you're looking at, and things behind or in front of that point tend to shift out of focus until you shift your focus onto a new point. The problem with 3D Movies, TV, and in this case games is that the focal point is not dictated by your eyes, but by a camera, be it real or artificial. Thus when the viewer tries to focus on a section of the image that the camera has deemed to be out of focus it could cause eye strain, headaches or even nauseous feelings in some individuals. Many of the studies have also shown that the longer an individual is robbed of their own ability to focus their eyes the higher chance that they may experience these issues. That being said most people typically don't experience issues with films less than 2 hours long, but there is a percentage of people who can't handle it for more than a few minutes.

If Sony actually pulls this off on any HDTV as the article says, then I will kiss your feet Sony.... This is like the next big thing in gaming. But I don't want to shell out another 2000-3000$ on a new 3D TV (I just bought a 42" HDTV last year).... Please make this possible on any HDTV.

It's things like this that make me think this generation of gaming may be my last. Call me old fashion but I like my standard controllers and games. All this 3D talk, having to wear glasses, vertal reality stuff just doesn't interest me. It makes me sick just thinking about it lol. I know we have to advance but this is just to much in my opinion. Not to mention I'm getting ready for grad school lol.

This technology is allowing you the option to play games in 3D. Not forcing you, if you prefer the "norm" then stick with it. Although I totally agree with the pad, I'm not overly keen on motion controls and if that's the way consoles end up going, my gaming will be done on the PC. Still, they have said the pad wont be going anywhere so I'm not worried.

Until real 3d appears where you don't have to wear stupid glasses i can't see it taking off. Sitting in a cinema watching a 3-d movie gives most people headaches after an hour or two or worse makes them feel sick. And do you really think people are going to sit in front of their tvs wearing stupid glasses?
The advent of the new 3-d being touted in cinemas was only introduced to combat dvd and piracy in the hope of getting people back into the cinema. With home 3-d its another way of companies getting you to upgrade your tv yet again.
Im all for new technology. I went to the Avatar preview and thought it looked nice but after about 10mins the effect wore off. I would rather they hold back in the home market until true 3-d arrives, not this cardboard goggles sh!te.

I witnessed a 3D TV that didn't require glasses in the emerging technologies section; however, it was limited to a 30 degree viewing angle. That being said it was by far the most impressive Non glasses 3D TV I have seen to this date.

The only way I can see 3d tv working if it was the size of an entire wall so that the whole picture is coming at you and not just a rinkydink window sized screen.

Again the Sony proves that the PlayStation®3 is leading the industry with its true next generation technology, giving gamers and multimedia enthusiasts alike the chance to use the 3D technology in their 200HZ televisions while M$ still insists on using its lower than DVD9 format ;-D !!!!!

Sony is just scared because the immense drop of HDTV prices and the enormous cuts in their profits. They now try to push some 3D stuff and get the prices up again and hope they can it push down the consumers throats.
But no thanks Sony. 3D movies in special theatres are fun sometimes but make me sick looking at them too long. Just a nice HDTV at home with no graphics reaching in my living room please.
EDIT
@ Fishy below
Nope. Philips for example has a prototype but clearly says: we first see if there is any demand for it and if consumers want it.
Its clear, the prices for HDTV's with the recession dropped too fast and the profits have dissapeared. They want to push new stuff.
@ Saaking
Call it what you want, but it shows that there isn't much of a profit margin anymore. Some 'innovations' aren't made because it gives more choice, but just to push down the throats of people for a lot of money.

It's called giving consumers more options. Something many people apparently don't like. If YOU don't want to 3d then don't buy it. Sony is still making normal games so they're not forcing anybody to buy a 3d tv.

bumpy, gtfo with your damn 1 post every 12 hours. what i mean by too late is that many ppl are buying hd tv's now and tv's that have the 3d input are on 09 models ppl are not buying 09 models like they are buying 08 left overs at really good prices.
and it could be too early cause there really isnt sh!t out to use the 3d input thats one of the reasons why i skipped it. i think sony has like 1 game that might use the 3d. i really wanted a tv with 3d but the cost just didnt make much sense for me at the time.. so i will wait till next gen consoles and upgrade when i i can get the last year model..
now scram bumpy...

MGS4 would probably not work since it is not a constant 60 fps. I'm pretty sure that the game has to be 60 fps for the 3d to work properly.
