Jak & Daxter & the Naughty Dog 3.0 Game Engine

With plans of a new Jak & Daxter game slowly building momentum, gameplayer takes a look at how the action could translate into the new Naughty Dog game engine.

"Far more exciting though is the prospect of a platformer of Jak & Daxter quality built upon the phenomenal Naughty Dog 2.0 game engine."

it is hard to even imagine how awesome this will be. a platformer with uncharteds attention to details and graphics would be radical

1.1 - you said it johnny!!!!!
i LOVE the j&d games. i'm getting "the lost frontier" for ps2 when it hits in november.

and of course, i can't wait to see what the 'dogs do with "jak". i'm drooling at how amazing it will look (with the "uncharted" engine). i think what insomniac has done with "ratchet" on ps3 is a good indicator as to what ND will produce with the j&d games.

oh, i love this description of UC2 from the article (it's the best UC2 description yet!)
from the article:
"Uncharted 2: Among Thieves topped our 10 Hottest Gameplay Experiences of E3 2009 feature, but is also a contender for the best looking console game we’ve ever seen. It melts off your screen and pours into your eye sockets."......that's kick @ss stuff!

I hope it is more realistic looking. i don't mean like GTA or something, I just mean more detailed textures and worlds. ratchet is still a bit bold and colourful to truly transcend to adults.

I dont see how. If you want a more realistic looking and mature platformer why not to stick with UC2? Jak & Daxter is a lot about colors, futuristic tech, robots, I dont see it looking "realistic".

i do not know how to describe. i just mean more detail, proper lighting and shadows, all the physics mumbo jumbo and diverse animations. intelligent combat.

and then i want all that transported into the jak fantasy world. so not GTA realistic, but not super kiddy

i'm turning 45 next month.........and i love "jak" and "ratchet" as much as KZ2 or MGS4!

i know people who think playing ANY games is "kiddy" behavior............not that i agree.

Solely based on that, I have to come to the conclusion that you haven't played R&C:ToD. And if you have, it doesn't sound like you were paying much attention to the details.

(And, FWIW, I'm too-near 40 to agree with your opinion about that sort of game appealing to adults. ;) R&C is definitely an exception.)

1.8 - beavis I said similar things on here today regarding R&C
A quote or 2 from my post earlier today:
"What is it with people that tag platform titles like the ones mentioned above and Ratchet and Clank type titles as kid games?"

"Most of my adult friends like those "kiddie games" more than most of the kids I know do. We grew up playing those types of games. What's wrong with still enjoying them today?"

And like you said I too know a lot of people that don't game that feel it is a waste of time and or they consider it childish. I personally could care less. My life, my free time, my hobby and I could think of a lot worse ways to spend my hard earned cash and spare time.

R&C and Jak & Daxter are my two favorite platform franchises.

BTW I didn't realize there were actually people as old as me on here (although you have a few years on me ;)). I thought I was completely surrounded by youngsters.

Look at the latest R&C and then substitute Ratchet with Jak. Or even better. That would be Jak & Daxter ND3.0 (or 2.0, good enough).

2.1 - if you read the article, it doesn't sound like they're speculating at all..........
it says:
"It used to be just E3, but nowadays the year is scattered with significant game shows which play host to a number of extremely impressive game announcements. It just goes to show how massive our industry has become that there is enough gold information stored away in publisher’s vaults that they continually drop our jaws at all these big events. Currently, the GamesCom event in Cologne, Germany, is a bustling hive of code monkeys, game nerds and rockstar journalists (of course) and news has been gushing out of the place. Here is a bit of a breakdown for you:

Note: We’ve already covered the exciting news about the PS3-Slim and the slashed price of Sony’s console – check it out here.

News: Naughty Dog, developer of the Uncharted series, announces plans to bring the legendary platform series Jak & Daxter to the PS3."

it says "word for word" that ND has announced it. and since i REALLY enjoy the series, i hope it's true.
i do know what you mean. sites sometimes take a few liberties in what they "think" they hear.

will want to switch to something less serious than Uncharted after Uncharted 2. Its high time they bring my fave platformer from last gen to show up on current gen. Alot of kids and also not so young kids will get their PS3 soon and its time for Jak and Daxter.

6 - I am afraid to type this but
I am not a fan of Jak and Daxter.

I loved the first game but the second game was such a change I lost interest in it. It had two of the things I hate in games. I hated the racing missions and the timed missions which they seemed to have a lot of. Another that I just remembered was that if you failed a mission you have to start back at the beginning. I found it a little unforgiving at times.

I bought the third game but I never got into it and just played the first few hours. I have yet to go back and finish it.

why should you be afraid?. hehe. The thing i love about Jak and Daxter is that i am able to play it with my nephews like RC. Its a game for everyone. As an adult these game is important to share with younger loved ones and it is always good to have some sort of old school platformers that mario started i grew up with. They never get old.

I agree. I played the hell out of The precursor legacy. Got all 101 power cells and every single of those orb things (it was over 1000 I think) but Jak 2 was just too different. I couldn't get into it. I really hope they go back the Jak and daxter style of the first game.

I love the full Jak franchise, I like the way as I matured the sequels of the games matured. I also believe that Jak was one of the only platform game franchises to actually show the character age throughout sequels. I'm used to Jak changing his hairstyle every game and Jak becoming more reckless than Daxter was in the original.

I loved the mix of GTA-lite action and platforming in Jak 2, Jak 3 was also very enjoyable and Jak X was a really solid mix between Burnout and Wipeout and actually was a real spiritual advanced sequel to CTR even in controls.

Cajun,

Yeah I fully agree, and I think that you are one of the few people on this site that share the same love for the Jak franchise as I do, and I loved all 3 Jak adventure games equally, and I loved the new direction that Jak 2 and 3 took.

If there's a new Jak game for the PS3, I hope that Naughty Dog keeps the same "darker" and mature tone that was in Jak 2 and 3. It would be cool if Naughty Dog went with a more "realistic" look and feel for a Jak PS3 game, but I'd be just as happy with the same look and feel as the past Jak games.

I agree with you lol the first game was inspired loved it the 2nd and 3rd felt like they were trying to mutate it into a gta platformer >_< appologies to fans but i tried to get into them and couldn't.

So for me its a hope for back to basics or a new IP for ND.

Really? I found 2 and 3 to be far more superior than the original. Like in Jak 2, when you beat a mission, it feels so rewarding through the hard difficulty. The thing about Jak 2, imo, it's hard but doesn't feel cheap.

I personally thought that, of the original three games, Jak II was the weakest. The aesthetic didn't compare to the of the original; dark, degraded city and sewers versus fantasy Precursor buildings, while I though that the vehicles (the hover bikes/ cars) were only okay at best. I found the third game to be a better sequel by mixing the aesthetics of the first two games together, while introducing new, better vehicles(the dune buggies). As for Jak X, I personally found it disappointing, particularly after CTR(the races themselves felt boring, and most race types weren't very fun).

Why do people think there's going to be a new jak game? you do know that it was trilogy yeah? and jak 3 wrapped up that story line.

Naughty dog is like that, they made crash 1,2 and 3 then just abandoned it

Crash was owned by Universal, technically Sony never owned Crash Bandicoot anyway, same case as why Insomniac still don't have Spyro. they were ridiculously expensive for Sony to buy. When ND was bought by SCE after CTR, they had to abandon the Crash franchise because of these reasons.

If you want to blame someone for the death of Crash, blame Radical who took it away from the rather respectable installments by Travellers Tales. Also, blame Sierra for ruining the franchise by allowing the core gameplay of Crash to be removed and trying to cash in from CTR.

wwII was over...........they moved on to a NEW storyline. same with halo.......trilogy is over and now there is ODST coming with "reach" due next year.
what about GOW3? do you really think kratos comes to an end? i don't think so.

and do you honestly expect ND to "give up" on a successful and popular franchise? i doubt it.

CoD is still CoD though, just a different timeline and new guns.

Crash bandicoot was ALOT bigger than the jack franchise, I think the crash 1,2 and 3 sold over 30 million copies, jak 1,2 and 3 only sold 2-3 million each. Yet we all know what naughty dog did to crash

Mooks,

Naughty Dog didn't "abandon" Crash Bandicoot. If you haven't noticed yet, a lot of Sony's own in-house studios usually move on to NEW Original IP's after each generation.

I bought all of the Crash Bandicoot games that Naughty Dog developed and loved them all, but seriously, after 4 Naughty Dog developed Crash Bandicoot games, what else new could Naughty do that wasn't already done before in the game? Nothing much really.

Funny thing is, now Activision own Spyro and Crash, seeing that Activision were acquired by Vivendi. They've yet to release a game that Activision have been involved in, with this year being the first year since 1996 without a Crash game, and the first year since 1998 without a Spyro game(that's not counting any mobile phone games). I don't want to imagine what Activision will do to theses two franchises.

I think this will happen and I for one, can't freaking wait for what shall officially be Jak 4.

REASONS FOR;

1. The PS3 has dropped in price. (DUH)
2. PS3 needs more family friendly franchises.
3. PSP Jak means that Sony have not forgotten Jak as they have Sir Dan, maybe this is to jog the memory.
4. I think the new Ratchet and Clank saga will soon be over on the PS3, so Insomniac had their time with the main PS3 cartoon'y/action/adventure series, instead of when ND and Insomniac released similar games in the same time frame eash year. Which means, time for Jak and Orange Lightning, za, za, zing.
5. I don't think the 3rd Uncharted will be out 2 years after Uncharted 2, also, even if Uncharted 3 IS...
6. ...Naughty Dog ALWAYS have a fourth wildcard game (Usually Karting)
7. Me and other PS3 fans are gagging for it, the fanbase is still huge for those anticipating a new Jak in the same way Ratchet was first shown on PS3.

Maybe the PSP game'll sort out all this 'Mar' situation for a fresh new saga on PS3.

Just bring it now!

I believe that as designers/modelers get through with building assets for Uncharted 2,the early building blocks, they can then turn to another IP Jak for example. So while one game continues on to the next phase another can be started.

A team like Naughty dog can rotate/shuffle and move devs from one IP to the next as certain phases get finished. The better a game like Uncharted 2 does will make it all the easier for a dev house like ND to go out and add talent...

When I hear anything ODDWORLD,Jak,Ratchet I stand up and just say bring it on!

A game like Jak with it's style and creativity,caricatures/toon style fun platforming can really shine with the extra power behind it,even moreso than with past systems. The A.I and effects,to eye candy, gameplay canbe much more complex and expansive, involving story-wise....

I have a friend I worked with on a couple projects a while ago that works with ND as an artist, and I have asked him a few times in the past Months,"will jak come to PS3?"....I always get a blink of an eye,and a "keep the faith" answer.

Here is to hoping...
