Best Buy Offering Free Games To Prevent PS3 Slim Trade-Ins

With the PlayStation 3 Slim starting to show up at Best Buys around the country, the national retailer has kicked off a plan to try and cut-down on the number of people returning a recent PS3 for the newer PS3 Slim, sourced tell Kotaku.

An internal memo, verified independently by a number of employees at different stores, shows that Best Buy is offering people who come into the story to exchange recently purchased PlayStation 3's for the newly released PS3 Slim a choice of a free PlayStation 3 title in lieu of the new slimmer, larger-hard-drive sporting console.

Wow that would be so unfortunate if you bought a PS3 and found out a few days later that the slim was announced. Oh well, I guess you should have done some research and seen all the rumors floating around.

Anyway, its cool that Best Buy is trying to do something for the consumers who got a little unlucky with this deal.

I intentionally picked up a 160 gig Fat PS3 the night the price drop was announced. I liked the look of the older model, and preferred the guaranteed reliability of the older model vs. something that's thus far unproven.

It's likely the Slim will have no problems, but in the end, I decided to go with the older hardware. So far, no regrets.

A bit more on topic...I actually got my PS3 at Best Buy, so maybe I should advantage of this unofficial "deal". A free copy of Infamous would actually make the 160 gig bundle at $400 a much better deal. Of course if they don't get the memo and actually accept my trade-in, that would suck.

The slim although added better sound support removed the alternative OS support that the phat has. I don't think going to 45nm will have significant impact as the 65nm is quiet as a whisper already.

I also prefer the phat instead of a further cheapened PS3 version. It seems with every iteration Sony does to the PS3, it has less features and now also looks cheaper. I guess we can't complain, since we asked for a price cut!!!

Yeah, the returns for a slim version will hurt both Sony and the retailer. That is a great idea, but does it cost Best Buy that much to ship the product back to Sony or is Sony supporting this with those games? Great idea though on whoever thought this up!

My PS3 is pretty recent too, and boy am I glad I bought one. I don't want to badmouth the ps3 slim, but I don't like the design very much, compared to the old model. Don't get me wrong, it is a nice looking console but there is something about the fat Ps3 that just makes me want to scream "THIS IS SO AWESOME". But then again, the slim is smaller and it would come in handy when I want to take it somewhere :P

Actually it doesn't hurt Sony at all. Best Buy is one of the retailers that purchased all of their stock before they sell it.

Circuit City is an example of a retailer that does the opposite. The get a product from Sony, sell it, and then pay Sony for that product. The problem with this is that when they went bankrupt, they were over $100 million in debt to Sony alone

I intended to get the slim when it came out, but after putting further thought into it, I decided I liked the regular version as well, so I got an 80 gig. Looks nice!

GTFO
slim runs cooler,
consumes less power than all other models,
cost less,
processes some audio stream people were asking for,
has a larger HDD
AND has integration with Bravia tvs

I'd take all that over loosing a Linux boot option ANY DAY.
Besides that, I've heard that the Other OS option is STILL available BUT it has to be done externally, like on an external HDD

And it's not "ugly" either, go to a gamestop and check one out in person, the thing is nice.

randomwiz

Wow, that SUCKS.

On Topic:
This is a good deal but what if you bought your 160Gb bundle at $500 just a day/week before the announcement? A $60 game hardly covers that.

Sorry, FamilyGuy, OtherOS is *gone* in the Slim, even on an external drive.

Though as you say, the Linux option only appeals to a tiny fraction of the market. Almost certainly less than the number of people who own Bravia TVs, really.

I'm glad I have a phat, because I'm one of those weirdos who put Linux on their machine, and I don't have a Bravia. For most people, I agree that the Slim's a better fit.

Sorry, but the list of things you listed are just natural progression. The only new thing is the new sound capabilities that as I said only a fraction will use. I would take the Linux option any day, but that is arguably as little used as the newly added sound options. Although I think the Linux option adds a lot more possibilities on the PS3.

I will never use the sound option as I don't have the equipment nor do I want to invest into it.

What irks me, is that with EVERY ITERATION OF THE PS3, THERE ARE FEATURES TAKEN OUT. Now they are even taking out features that is just in software. Why? It doesn't cost them anything to leave it on there, after all it is already developed.

well yes but there were that many rumors it was hard to tell if it was true/when we'd see it. my ps3 broke about a month ago and i replaced it the next day. there were plenty of slim rumors but i didn't know exactly when it would release and if the rumors were true.

theres that many sites trying to get hits it's hard to take everything you hear on the internet as fact

They need to push the advertisement pedal. Really, the slim is new, it can do a bunch of things and it's a VERY POWERFUL MACHINE and is now pretty affordable. Sony realllyy needs to be aggressive with their marketing. I have noticed though that most recently, they have been doing all the right things. It's like they learned from their mistakes and have had a to-do list like

Reduce the price - Check
Add more games to greatest hits - Check
Enhance firmware - Check
Add more spaces to Home - Check
Manufacture a slim - Check

I hope the list keeps going on and on :)

3 - Don't know about USA
But I know that stores such as Gamestation and GAME no longer and for a long time now allow customers who have purchased a console to just bring it back cos they didnt want it. So am wondering can customers in the USA do that? As I was aware that with games they cannot return them at all?

Also I own the original PS3 60gb and to be honest I love how shines all over and the memory slots and bc that is offered along with 4usb ports and internal power supply. I totally dislike those tacky buttons on the new slim along with its new design and logo etc.
The only thing about the slim that is interesting is the HD audio.

4 - who would do such a thing?
The fat is the best of the bunch (IMO). In fact I just ordered a 320gb seagate 7200 16mb cache 2.5" hdd for my fatty. $70 at newegg.

Plus the fat just looks so nice and shiny in a home theater center. The slim looks like it belongs in the kids room.

Yep and that is why it is going to sale like hotcakes. Looks more like something I feel more comfortable letting little Jimmy have in his room without fear of it breaking.

you should've gotten the 5400RPM. look up articles regarding a 7200 and the PS3 and you'll see why i say that.

I get what ur sayin. Maybe it is me but I know what is under the hood and wouldnt really trust the quality of such a machine in the hands of my gamecube/ps2 scale of kids. Those systems are expendable if necessary. PS3...not so much.

The look and price are matched for each other. Now sony needs to get a hold of their marketing dept if they want to sell to the wii crowd. The thing is, the wii is THE thing to have regardless of performance. Those who didnt get one last xmas will most likely get one this xmas over the more value proven ps3 or even the 360.

Just a hunch I am all to worried will come true again.

@joy...I read a few articles and what interested me most about this hdd was the amount of cache it had. Most of the other models I looked at (be it 5400 or 7200) had 8mb of cache. I am figuring the more cache the quicker it would load common stuff like going back and forth between games to the xmb. 5400 would certainly be quieter and create less heat.

Physical buttons? The touch surface buttons made me freak out over how awsome the ps3 was. And why on earth is it not shiny anymore? I can understand doing that for the PspGo because your touching it, but you aren't going to get fingerprints over a stationary console.

Oh the fingerprints... and the scratches... True that. The PS3 phat looks awesome, but I stress each time I have to grab mine... it gets scratched SO EASILY, and then there's fingerprints all over the place. But hey, it's shiny :D

@darthv72

you didn't research enough. there is little to no performance improvements when going from the 5400 to the 7200 because the PS3 can't utilize it. it was designed with the 5400 in mind. but hey, your console. i wouldn't take the chance of it overheating, but then again i have an original 60gb model that's virtually irreplaceable now.

oh, and here's a quick source, i just googled "5400 or 7200 ps3"
http://boardsus.playstation...

EDIT: there are some false accusations within that forum thread, but what i've said is accurate. apparently there is an IGN article addressing this as well. one user said:

"If you read the IGN article, they said 7200 RPM Hard Drives are actually slower than 5400 RPM Hard Drives in the PS3."

My ps3 is the 80gb motorstorm edition. I have not opened it up to see the exact model but lets say it is a 5400 rpm 8mb cache drive. Wouldnt it be more beneficial to not only increase the speed but also the cache capacity?

Going from 5400 to 7200 would generate more heat/noise (although this is a newer model of momentous drive so it is supposed to run cooler and quiet) yet it also has 16mb of cache. Other drives I have looked at from hitachi and fujitsu seem to have 8mb standard for the same price as this one which is faster and more cache.

Some of the articles I have read are also posted from the late 06 and 07 time frame. I am sure drives have been improved to require less power while improving performance since then. Just a thought.

Thanks for the info.

there is a real world performance increase of ppl i know who have tested 7200 and even some ssd have reported some things can get alot quicker as far as heat goes i would only worry if ur ps3 is already on the noisy side otherwise it will be fine.

There's no way in in the world I would trade in my 60GB for the Slim.... I just love the overall sleek and sexiness of it over the Slim.

Even though I'm not a huge fan of the PS3 Slim design, I still think the redesign was a pretty good decision on Sony's part to appeal to a wider audience at this new $299 price.

The Shiny, Sleeker looking PS3 just looked a lot more high end, and expensive, but the more "Subdued" look of the Slim just looks like something that would appeal to a slightly younger crowd that has already been buying PS3's up to this point.

10 - PS3 Slim...
Despite it's bland design, I almost wanted to replace my 40GB PS3 for the Slim version. But looking at my rare Silver model, I decided to hold back.

Damn the Slim's charm......
