Don't fall for the BS FUD excuses the "naysayers" use to hype some other racer over GT5 acting like damage is THE thing that makes a sim a sim.

When GT5 is released you'll see the most realistic simed damage any sim racer has ever done on consoles. When you compare them later on you'll see that Forza's car damage looks very out dated and feels like child's play in comparison.

Don't listen to the haters, they'll all eat crow when GT5 releases. Maybe well see the updated damage collision at TGS though but we you do see it, you'll realize naysayers are full of $&%! As it stands now, the damage on vehicle in GT5 surpass any forza has ever done but you'll see better soon enough.

I am not really sure, there has been lots of GT5 video recently so I am not sure(I can't check now) but I think that .gif must be from this video:

@Chubear

You simply can't say that the damage in GT5 (at the moment) is ahead of Forza's. Here's what it is at the moment:

- Not all cars in a race will be affected by damage
- Damage involves knocking doors off but not scratching the paintwork or other minor damage (this is important as the main complaint against GT5:Prologue was that the cars were just "bumper cars" - still the case)
- Collision response is just the same as ever, meaning that it will still be possible to win a race by slamming at 140MPH into a corner and bouncing off. Only difference now is that your door will fly off.
- It's not any more advanced than anything else we've seen. It uses the same techniques of damageable/removable parts that we've seen in GTA3, Burnout 1 etc. It doesn't look realistic when I slam into the car in front and I'm damaged but he's not. It doesn't look realistic when I ram into (e.g.) the flimsy tape marking off the edge of the track on Eiger Nordwand, bounce off, and all I notice is that the door is flying open.

I personally am thrilled that they've included damage, but this is the kind of effort I expected them to be making back with GT3. It's clear that they haven't really thought about damage until late in the game, when the fans were begging them to include it, and GT5:Prologue shows this. Then they've been forced to fudge a solution which doesn't include all cars and isn't overly impressive. I know you will come back with the car manufacturers' arguments that they don't want damage for their cars in the game - well I'm sure that's a factor, but I think it's also partly an excuse which gets them out of doing a load of work on damage.

Also, you can say what you like about GT being "the definitive racing series" and all that, but for now it's about GT5 vs Forza 3 - the past doesn't matter. Forza 3's physics are superior to GT4's unquestionably. Forza 3's graphics are superior to GT4's unquestionably. So GT5 has to do something more. Graphics it has, maybe physics it has too, but damage is one area where it falls down at the moment. So is features... in some regards. I think I speak for many people when I say that I would rather have a functioning online system than 1 1/2 times as many cars.

I'll admit that from what we've seen GT5's damage isn't spectacular, but neither is Forza's. I remember crashing into a wall at 80 with Forza and getting some crumpled sheet metal, that's all. Took a few more crashes before I had any effect to my performance.

Also nice attempt at comparing a PS2 game to a 360 game. GT4 has just as good of physics as Forza 2 and you haven't even played Forza 3 but somehow know what the physics will be like.

You do know that mechanical damges have been implemented in GT5,right?and that is much more important than visual damage

Yeah well what I mean is, that the reason you don't slam into other cars, and the reason that you don't slam into corners at 140MPH in real life is that you would DIE or at least you'd wreck your car. If you drive too aggressively you'd get disqualified or have a penalty (Polyphony better sort this out as it was very flawed in Prologue, don't know if it's better now).

If Polyphony are going to do realistic damage it's going to mean wrecking your car if you fly head-on into a wall. It's going to mean rolling your car down a cliff if you break through the tape on Eiger Nordwand. Now that's one extreme. The other extreme is having bumper cars as we have seen in prologue. But it's actually closer to the latter still.

I believe that, unlike shooters where realism would kill the fun, racing games CAN be realistic because it's not as though you're TRYING to knock each other off the road and actual crashes wouldn't occur that frequently. In fact, in GT if you DO crash hard into a barrier and spin out, you've probably lost the race anyway.

Realistic damage and crashes would benifit GT immensely in my opinion. At the moment, due to the lack of rollover, it feels as though the game is gluing you to the track and there's no movement in that axis. Damage would add a thrill that you don't get from GT at the moment - you're making a risky overtake which could end badly, but you just manage to pull it off. You're heading into a wall so you brake HARD and pull the handbrake as well to avoid totalling your car. Cars in GT5 still look like rock-solid bumper cars, I am sorry to say. The bodywork of most cars will dent and scratch when you have a ton of metal crashing into it. Not so in the current build of GT5.

Mechanical damage (i.e. wear and tear) is a great feature and I applaud Polyphony for that. At the moment all we have is tyre wear, and it would be nice to see that other components can be affected by long endurance races or too many bumps. But it's very odd to crash into a wall at high speed and instead of dying (as you would in real life) your door flaps open and the "axle damage parameter" goes up by 20%.

So the truth comes out. Interesting.

EDIT: "Damge is great..."

Uh, bumpers, doors and hood... only things that get damaged. No body deformation whatsoever. Not the best damage and NOT realistic, imo. GT5 still looks great. Hopefully it delivers in everything else.

1.12 - crash damage more fillrate intensive than crash deformation
having removable parts like doors, bonnet, bumpers is actually difficult to pull off as you have to carry those extra polys and textures around even if they are not visible until the collision.
eg. When the bonnet comes off the engine is visible, before damage; the engine did not need to be rendered now it does whether you have a collision or not.
eg2. When the door is removed the drivers full body including feet is exposed. Previously this was out of sight and did not need to be drawn.

So the damage engine is more of a processor burden than mere deformation.

There's no camera momentum/inertia effects. So apparently, according to GT5, the driver's head remains PERFECTLY STILL the ENTIRE time, even when braking/accelerating/SLAMMING INTO OBJECTS, and the car doesn't rumble when you're driving at fast speeds. Uh, sorry. NOT immersive. In fact, that's probably the one thing that breaks immersion the most. If I don't feel like I'm in a real car, then it doesn't bloody feel like it's a sim.

If this is just a problem stemming from the game not being a non-final product, fine, put it in the final game and I will buy this, but otherwise no, because you cannot truly recreate the experience of driving a car if the camera doesn't move a centimeter in c*ckpit view.

Yes. N4G censors the word c*ckpit.

please admit that the partial damage is stupid, how ignorant can people get?? You either have ALL the cars take damage or have NONE!!
This has nothing to do with how well it plays or how good it looks.

Yes partial damage is stupid. It should at least be completely disabled for races where there are cars that don't support damage, BUT it should be there for ALL cars. I am sorry but the manufacturers can't ALL be objecting otherwise there wouldn't be damage in Forza.

A more important issue is: why am I going to pick a car that can get damaged when I can pick one that will remain flawless no matter how many times I crash it? If they're doing damage properly, it will cost credits to repair the cars if you crash them. This gives me even less incentive to use them - however if I want the best racing experience I want damage!

I'll admit damage isn't perfect, but that can be said about any other racing game, as for GT, any kind of damage is a good improvement and very welcomed since they're doing it for the first time.

But the thing is, that's the "only" solid point forza fanboys has over GT, that's why the can't see past it. When it was GT5P against F2, the number of cars was everything, but now, they don't care how many cars are there and damage is all that matters. funny people.

wouldn't you rather have less "real" damage but present on all cars, then "real" damage but on some cars?
It's basicly the only point I want to make here. Its just so odd this way.

I do, while I don't believe that will be the case in final game, the game still has dew months before release, and at worst, "destructible" cars wont be taking damage while racing against "no damage" cars.

The amazing thing is you're getting the same insane car reflections and lighting in gameplay as you do in the photo modes, which is amazing. The windows have such amazingly real reflections, and the way the light hits the cars to create just the right amount of glare depending on the angle... Man....

yeah the native resolution is somewhere 'near' 1080p...the PS3 outputs the game at 1080p, but the actual resolution (at least for GT5p) was somewhere just south of it...but still way above 720p...

gameplay is at 60hz...replays at 30hz...all confirmed for gt5p, and there is no real reason the full release would change that I would bet...

What the.... can you give an example of a game that DOESN'T use 2D textures?!!?? Textures ARE 2D (except in very rare circumstances). You get a 3D object, and wrap a 2D texture on its surface. Do you even have any clue what a texture is? Probably not. Here I'll help you. THIS:

http://www.sharecg.com/imag...

is a texture (for a person's face in this instance). Notice that it is a 2-dimensional image - that is, it has width, and height, but not depth. It's the same for almost every game in existance.

Damage is nice in all and does add to the realism but seriously folks it is not required. I know Forza has damage but visually is rather pathetic. Boom head on collision at 150 mph and my car has some nicks and a dent. Sorry but if all these racing games were to be realistic it would take a Crysis level machine to compute all the physics and graphical deformation (not to mention 15 other cars). How it affects performance on the other hand is quite impressive (in Forza) and I hope GT at least simulates that aspect for all cars. This is what truly adds the realism. Realism is not denting your bumper its tapping an opponent and having your steering alignment shifted, which then causes your tires to scrub, which then makes you loose traction and cause more potential damage. You drive like a fool you pay the price. This is what GT needs more than anything.
