Beyond Good & Evil Sequel In Trouble, Says Ubisoft President

Remember the sequel to Beyond Good & Evil that even had a trailer posted on the Internet? Well, in an interview with IndustryGamers, North American president of Ubisoft Laurent Detoc said that it's possible it may never be released. After being asked about the risks of a new IP, citing the cast of Assassins Creed, he answered

Yes, that worked out, but it doesn't work out every time, and sometimes you come back to an IP that didn't work because you still think it could have – like Beyond Good and Evil, which was leaked, so now people know we're working on a new one. Whether or not it comes out remains to be seen anyway, but we didn't want to abandon that IP because it has a cache and authenticity about it. There's something very pure about that game and it's too bad that we were not able to build it as an IP at the time.

I am not sure what leaked the teaser trailer for Beyond Good and Evil 2?
Because if so it was shown at Ubisoft's Ubidays 08. So you would think Ubisoft would have known what they were going to show. My guess is that this is another teaser or hint that there will be some new stuff on Beyond Good and Evil 2 coming up soon. This way Ubisoft can down play what people think they will get to see from them. So at Ubisoft's next big game showing they can knock people's socks off with a brand new BGaE2 game showing. At least I hope so. Because I liked the first game and really want to play the second.

I'm fairly certain he's talking about this:

And, from the bottom of my heart, I hope this game comes to fruition. I enjoyed the first one on both PC and PS2 and would love to play more in the world of Jade and Pey'j.

1.2 - Along with *Last Guardian* this is my most anticipated game...
creative talent....? I know 3 people that have worked on the game thus far.Reliable co-workers I have worked with in the past. 2 of them have done pre-viz/concept art,and another modeling/texturing for the game.In fact he is still working on it as I type...What I do know,is that it is in full production, this is not a "test",or proto-type...

This is an old fashioned tease or hype build up attempt!

This game drips with style and creativity...

Because it's such a fantastic game, on par with ICO and SOTC among the best PS2 games (at least for me).

I bought the first one again not to long ago just to play it.

Don't know what happened to the first copy I bought....still though this game is amazing, could never get enough of it.

God I just hope they don't cancel the sequel.

5 - I dont get it
Heres a line from the article:

"He denied that it a new game had been confirmed in any way".

WTF is that. BG&E2 IS confirmed, Ubisoft themselves showed a trailer. Whether that gameplay teaser was leaked or not, *everybody* is already expecting BG&E2 because it was officially shown just last year.

Maybe I'm getting it wrong... somebody tell me what he means.

Perhaps testing the waters? See what the public/gamer reaction is to the news of canceling a game we know nothing about?

Seems strange they would create such a high quality teaser trailer, claim it was 'leaked', and then claim the game may never be launched.

Something fishy I think...

7 - I'm Probably in the Minority Here
But I thought the original Beyond Good & Evil was absolutely average. I think it's a classic case of hype surpassing the actual product. The game was quirky and campy but the story and setting never really grabbed me like I expected it to.

Your opinion is respected, even if I don't agree... at all! :)

However I suspect there are an awful lot of people who are heaping praise on the original game but probably never played it - just because it's cool to be seen as supporting a cult or niche title. Same thing happened with Psychonauts.

If so many gamers claim to love the first game - how come it sold so poorly!! :)

Having come acroos loads of that "I was there!" attitude myself from people saying they were at certain gigs(when I WAS at some of them and there were like 50 or 60 people yet 70, 000 claim to have seen them)when they just couldn't have been,

However, Jdoki fella, I dunno if the same is really true of BG&E. It might seem like there's loads of us saying we played the game but we're(the gamers that care enough to go to places like this and more onscure gaming sites)a pretty small group compared to even the meagre sales of games like this or Okami or NMH etc-so while a few might be trying for cool points I think most of us are pretty honest.

They WILL release this btw. Fact!

8 - I enjoyed me some BG&E
This game deserves a sequel. My biggest gripe with the original, was just when you get into it... it's over. And if a new one does come out, do something about her running animation. Not the cutest thing to have to look at.

Hey, thanks for the link. Too bad that's only a cinema and not in game. And that's not the running animation I'm talkin' about. 'Cause if it were, I'd shut up. Check out a video from the original game with her running. Yikes.

damn !

BG&E was such a great game, it's a shame it did not sell a lot of copies... It's just like Psychonauts or Okami, a true gem nobody played.

I like a good shooter like (almost) everyone, but come on people, games like BG&E need to be succesfull more often

well, most people here on N4G play games like these but how could the message reach the mainstream audience ?

Unfortunately, BG&E was a mediocre success in terms of sales but a critical success by those who actually bought it and played it (myself included).

In today's gaming era, however, the former is more important. A company, especially a third party one, is going to create something they know will be a hit (i.e. a sequel to a commercial success like AC or a Splinter Cell) than take time to hope a sequel to a game that very few played will share similar success.

On the other hand, if it were a first party title or an exclusive, you could be a little more daring with your offerings.

13 - Lies! :(
I've seen footage! They must still be working on it!

The first one was so great, it had everything:
Sandbox and sneaking gameplay, great minigames, a twisty-turny story, photography, totally unique sci-fi semicartoony/dark setting, a hot(and interesting, of course :P) lead character and a talking companion pig with jet boots.

Seriosly, what more can you ask for in a game?

I hate that everyone is jumping in the "I've played it. It's epic."-bandwagon.
'You' people let this game down! Remember that.

Can't wait for I am Alive to come out.
