PlayStation 3 Trophies Dissected

Achievements have been in video games for many years, though not in the way we know them now. Goldeneye on the Nintendo 64 rewarded players who completed goals with guns, cheats & special modes, while Spyro 2 on the original PlayStation rewarded players who unlocked 'Skill Points' with extra lives.

However, these achievements really created the foundation that PlayStation's Trophies and Xbox 360's Achievements and Gamerscore were based upon, although they were arguably not as rewarding or satisfying to achieve. As the months go by since the introduction of Trophies to the PS3 on July 2nd 2008, to compete with rival Xbox 360's Achievements and Gamerscore system, the challenges set by developers for Trophies have changed drastically.

I never thought I would get so much enjoyment from collecting trophies and leveling up. It's almost like a game on its own.

1.1 - Excellent!
Both PS3 Trophies and X360 Achievements definatly extend the enjoyment of games.

A huge majority of people love the challenge of collecting every achievement for each game, even if it means sitting through the whole game again on a much harder difficulty, or playing through over and over to get 100,000 kills.

I guarantee that a huge majority of people wouldn't sit through the whole of the Veteran campaign on any of the Call of Duty games if there weren't achievements and trophies involved.

It's just a shame that 3rd party developers don't alway include trophies in there games for the PS3, yet they do for the X360. It's getting a lot better now, but there are still titles that are missing them, and titles where they could be implimented with a patch (Metal Gear Solid 4 springs to mind), yet they won't.

Overall though, achivements/trophies are probably one of the best things to happen to gaming in a long time, probably the best since the invention of the analog stick.

Mirror's Edge platinum was impossible. Glad you had an easy time with it but I couldn't get any of those speed runs or time trial things for the life of me and eventually gave up. Even after watching people online and setting checkpoints for myself doing exactly what they did somehow my time just never was what theirs were and the game would eventually punk me everytime too. I loved the story mode of that game but the rest of the trophies were so frustrating.

BlazBlue is like that somewhat. A trophy is usually accompanied by something else being unlocked, whether it be a gallery photo, an hidden audio track or the unlimited version of a character. But thas mostly for the off-line trophies, the ones attained online only get you galley photos as far as i've seen/noticed.

I didnt know other people thought it was difficult. I thought it was reasonably challenging but once you figure out how to execute the moves easy it really is not hard at all..

2 - Very good article...
And I agree with the list of "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly".

I doubt I'll ever get the R2 or KZ2 plats, because I just don't have that kind of time to devote to getting them.

I did finally just get the Infamous Plat. I was worried because I was missing just one blast shard, but once I knew where to look (because I saw where others had missed the same shard), I got it and got the Plat.

Trophies have DEFINITELY extended the life of many of the games I've played and that's a good thing! :D

The InFamous platinum is the only platinum I have, I'd have one for Noby Noby Boy if PSN games had platinums but that's it.

I like getting trophies but unless I really enjoy the game I'm not going to go out of my way for them.

i agree too ... wipeout HD tropies are quite hard but you just need skill to get them ..but the online portion of gta 4 ..is just way too hard for me to spent my time into ...especially when the co-op trophies are bugued ... i have all the respect for the people who have a plati for GTA4

another good thing about burnout paradise is that you don't have to get everything in orider to have the platinium ... the game then try to get you in by the carrots of more vehicules to unlock ... and the online challenges are actually FUN !!

Kind of long article, but I don't like online achievements/trophies, because you rely too much on others. For instance, when a game first comes out you are more likely to get multiplayer achievements, but as time goes on people get better skilled (and the "not" so skilled gamer tend to move on to something else new) making it even more difficulty for new gamers to achieve those achievements/trophies.

I like how CoD4 did theirs, no multiplayer achievements but compensate with experience points.

2.4 - Go For The Uncharted Platinum
It's not too hard to get and the game is just a joy to play anyway. I'll admit crushing can be crushing at times but just stick with it.

I have to say that I'm quite dissapointed in the PS3 trophies. The reason is that you cannot use the trophies to anything except show other people what kind of serious gamer you are, which really blows. They really got to implement something like the xbox achivements so you get gamer points for each trophy which you then can use on buying DLC og new PSN games.

Yeah...it would be alot nicer if they would use trophies as some sort of "currency" for home....or allow you to download some random stuff for the game depending on how many trophies you have collected. Now that would make me want to get a plati on every game instead of just my favorites.

3.2 - Home Rewards
I saw something about home rewards when I downloaded the Namco Museum Essentials Trial. You can unlock certain outfits for your home avatar by unlocking the trophies that are in the game.

3.3 - They're Starting To Do This
I got several unlocks in Home because I got the inFamous Platinum. I'm sure other disc-based games will follow suit but mini-games in Home already have unlocks to them.

home rewards is indeed a step in the right direction, the only thing we all need is an indicator for how to get them, the xmb shoould have "home rewards" above your "trophy collection" and a special *DLING* sound to it

agree?

3.5 - Well I feel like with achievements...
...you should get some physical/downloadable content with it because you've already paid into the system. Rewarding customers with game content makes more sense with LIVE. Whereas PSN isn't getting any revenue from you for just playing their games and collecting trophies.

4 - Trophies
only add to a games replayability.I have gone back to many games to procure that one elusive trophy,Resistance2 being the most recent. It is a sense of accomplishment to finally obtain the platinum and it often forces you to experience a game in ways you might not have considered.Take Warhawk for example, you have to be a well rounded player and try everything the game offers in order to get the platinum,10,000 hours of playtime aside.A trophy reward system, maybe something like the MGO reward shop would be a possible idea but it isn't a requirement(for myself anyways).Favorite platinum so far, either R2 or Fallout, platinums I am not overly proud of,LOTRC,CODWAW.

Question; What is the highest platinum total yet known? My bro has a guy on his psn with 26/27? but I am sure there are higher totals.
Correction-23 platinums.

R2's platinum is very frustrating to get. I've only gotten around 3000 kills so far in my play time (silly me played coop too much) and now I regret it.

I'm #62 on the list but I've been slacking off. I recently platinumed BlazBlue but it was pretty easy, and I still need to do the Skate 2 Legend trophy to platinum that...I'm just lazy as hell to grind for it. Same with Resistance 2.

Socom trophies? Yea,I hear you on that one. They are a frustrating, odd bunch of trophies.I gave up lol.
The R2 platinum isn't bad,the 10k kills takes time but the rest aren't bad and the OMGWTFBBQ trophy can be 'cheated' to an extent.Have marksman will travel was my motto.=)

Skill based trophies are welcomed, i love them and try to get them, time based trophies that require you to just play mindlessly without skill or enjoyment is stupid and very arrogant from the developer to think that you have no live or other games but their game.

8 - This was a great read...
..Trophies have meant so much to 'finishing' a game. It allows you to brag to others, too, when you can unlock something like 'Beat Zico' on WipEout HD! :)

Still, Warhawk has been my first trophy game, but LEAST favorite... one, it's totally cheatable (except the ranking up part). All those trophies can be obtained in 'Non-Ranked' games which makes it a joke... and the trophies themselves are just ridiculous. If I remember correctly- Bronze: Having top score in TDM and not have a death (WTFF!). Bronze: Having top score in DM and not have a death (totally WTFF!).

Great game, but trophies needed to be toned down a bit... I applaud the first person to achieve a Platinum LEGITLY on that game!

but when i start approaching the next psn level(say maybe around 95%) i can get pretty excited and will refuse to sleep till i get another trophy to level up :) They really should add some sort of music that will play when you level up...
