Is Eight Days Still Alive?

On 4th June 2008, Sony cancelled both Eight Days and the ps3 'The Getaway' title. However, Jim Jagger who is (or was) Animation Director on Eight Days has released a demo reel including some examples of his work; and pre production footage of Eight Days features prominently.

Could this be a sign that Eight Days is back in development? Or confirmation that Sony have abandoned the title, leaving Jagger free to do what he wishes with his contributions to the game?
Updates:
GhostStorm contact Sony about Eight Days and it’s bad news: Sony Said, No, Eight Days is no longer in development… the footage in that showreel is old, and leaked out after some of team members left the studio where it was being made.

1.1 - There is usually a reason that
a certain game either gets delayed (please see Duke Nukem) or simply canceled all together as both Eight Days and The Getaway were. The most common scenarios are usually budget, lack of interest in the game, or an overall poor quality in the games development, and I personally believe the latter was true of Eight Days. In my opinion Eight Days is better of left for dead(no pun intended), and the developers should focus on more promising projects

1.2 - I think Eight Days and The Getaway are not PERMANENTLY cancelled
they are cancelled for now. That doesn't mean there will be no Eight days or getaway 3

I really wish they'd throw Eight Days back on the block and start grinding away on it. But I can see where they're coming from in canceling it. Just sucks for us 350k that would have bought it and the other 250k that would have played it...

Anyway, this footage we all saw last year sometime. In a similar video. Maybe it was even this video minus the EyePet footage. Or a video from the same guy. But I KNOW for a fact that we saw this, or something like it with the same footage posted on N4G LONG AGO. So this is nothing new and shows no sign of life for the game. I GUARANTEE THAT.

right here, but the video is awol. Which I guess can be expected when the post is 285 days 10 hours ago...

I believe Getaway and Eight Days were to ambitious for the PS3. Just look at the detail and plans they had for them. They were too much for the PS3 in the end I believe. PS4 though. Maybe. Sony has alot on its plate every year. More so than any other platform typically.

What if Sony realised they should never announce a game too early (cos of KZ2 delaying), and just said the games were cancelled altogether, but they are actually working on them in secret?

That would be awesome.

1.7 - They've already got Uncharted...
Remember, Sony likes to keep all their IPs fresh and unique, different from each other.

Uncharted already fills the "summer blockbluster" role pretty well.

Sony decided to cancel Getaway and Eight Days to use their technology elsewhere, on different unique IPs.

I would be guessing the team are probably working on innovative REAL games(hopefully not mini games) for the PS Motion Controller. ^_^

All we need to know is that their talents are not going to be wasted. Sony made a great business decision in order to save TONS of money, to be able to provide us with MORE unique IPs and less of the same thing.

Sony also wouldn't do this if Sony didn't have something even BETTER behind the scenes.

If I'm not mistaken Sony London isn't really doing much atm. They're obviously still working on EyePet, probably another SingStar, but for the most part I don't think they're doing anything else atm. Maybe working on something else eyetoy related. But I think when it comes to big games like the Getaway and Eight Days (both obviously canceled) we're not going to see this studio pump out anything like that soon.

Too bad Sony doesn't shoot the NBA license over to them because NBA Shootout 97 was one of the best basketball games I've ever played. ;) It's hard to say what direction their going with this studio but given the economy I'd have to believe that Sony London isn't going to be doing anything big. Sony shut down both these games for a reason and we can only assume why. I'd assume that because they have limited appeal and would have minimal sales that wouldn't justify the development costs. But Sony London will probably just continue w/ SingStar and possibly some eyetoy content. EyePet looks absolutely brilliant and I'm sure they're going to hit the market hard with DLC like they are w/ LBP on that one. New clothes, maybe new animals, toys, etc... ;) And surely once that motion control reaches true development status (maybe it is now) Sony London will be working on something for that...

8 Days... poor quality...

What?

Watch the related video. The whole thing. The animations are beautifully done.

Considering the leaked dev footage I at least hope that those assets are being put into another game.

2.2 - Actually with some of the recent footage of UNCHARTED 2
it had many people (including myself) wondering if the technology behind Eight Days was being used for Drake.

I would not be surprised at all if this tech is used in some form or fashion in another game.

@slyguy
It really seems possible, those are some extremely fluid animations, especially for something that early in development. In the live chat Evan Wells mentioned Sony's internal database and how people will upload source code, etc, so it seems likely that they didn't completely waste this tech.

Seeing as I got K2 I def. would check out G3 & 8 days. If G3 came out it would whup GTA4 in online play bc it's a Sony exclusive & usually the connection for online play is much better for 1st party games. I know I would play G3 more online if it had less lag compared to GTA4. I hardly play GTA4 online because the connection sucks, at one point I couldn't even play a game mode with a buddy because for some reason we weren't even able to connect. Imagine G3 using the Ps3 to it's fullest, that is something I am interested in, G3 could have been what GTA4 was supposed to be at least in my opinion anyways. GTA4 was still a fun game, at least I had fun playing it, don't know about the rest of you peeps.

I don't think it has anything to do with Eight Days possibly being alive and kicking... it's pretty much like a Personal Portfolio of some of his work.

I already know I'm going to get disagree's for saying this, but at this point, I don't really think that there's a need for Eight Days, because Uncharted is pretty much doing what Eight Days was going for... the only difference I see is that there were various stunt moves in Eight Days, but the gameplay between them is pretty much the same.

However, I still hope that The Getaway for PS3 is started back up again... the franchise wasn't exactly "Critically Acclaimed" in reviews, but I loved both Getaway games and the production values in those games were pretty amazing.

If the In-Game Assets for Eight Days haven’t been used yet, then by all means, it should defiantly be shared with Naughty Dog for a future Uncharted game.

i do agree with you. I still believe that the storyline for this game could of been pretty awesome when you think about it since its called 8 Days. it could of been about a guy who had to resolve an intense problem in 8 days or else his family could of been killed. thats why I want to see this game made.

8 - Why I Want Eight Days
The game was to be set over the course of eight days, and to be set in eight different states, which would have made it the largest game map to date. The game would have also included a real life clock. If the game was being played at night, it would be night in the game. You would have been able to choose between two characters, one "good" and one "bad".In the "bad" characters storyline, he attempts to get revenge on a mob syndicate The other storyline would follow the "good" character, a detective searching for the same mob syndicate, after he kidnaps his son.The two characters end up crossing paths, and eventually work together.

The game is not cancelled at the point where it wont reappear.

IT has already been made known that the only reason Eight Days stopped production was because it was still in the pre production phase when Sony decided to allocate resources to completing games that were far into development, such as Killzone2.

Eight Days was further ahead then the new Getaway so in all honesty its understanable the route Sony took. But both games will come back... Eight Days looked like a killer new IP and the Getaway is a first party sandbox title from a existing series. These are two tile Sony will want out if they are of a good enough quality.

Anyone with any sense knows Eight Days and the Getaway will be back, the studio working on them was under pressure to get Home up and running, it was easier for Sony to say they weren't being released to stop questions about them, once EyePet is finished, I'm fairly certain news of Eight Days or the Getaway will come to light.

At the time I remember there being all sorts of talk of people being layed off -then it turned out they'd been reassigned to Home and Eyepet-except those taken into the internal dev help team and those unwilling to move to the other projects.

It's quite p[robable that these games are much further along than this reel shows-this may be one of the guys who felt his talents weren't being used much on the new projects and bailed making this his CV reel. Whatever, we know Eyepet is done and dusted(bar post prodection at a guess)and Home is now more about getting dves own spaces up and running-m,eaning the staff that were moved cannot possibly be all worjking on Eyepet/Home anymore and would it make more sense to reignite projects or start from scratch?

Whio knows but it seems likely that at least one opf the games will resurface given time, imo.

16 - Great Vid
The animation system they were planning to use in "8 days" looks top notch (every animation is SO smooth :D this is how it should be everywhere!)
Getaway and 8 days could´ve been big titles for PS3 (though Getaway and Black Monday were only decent)
... so of course it´s sad that they´re still not working on both games.
I just hope that the animation system gets adopted by a another game, because it looks amazing!

i don't know...

if you ask me sony made a big mistake cancelling these games.

to be perfectly honest, i had may more interest and think these games would have been way way bigger then some of the exclusives sony have released so far.

its a real shame.

a lot of games like this on both the ps3 and 360 have ended up being scrapped and instead we have been plagued with these games from never ending titles that realse every year or bi-yearly.

eight days and uncharted 2 seem to have similar feel and animation. i bet the assets in eight days were moved over to UC 2. with both games being so similar, i could understand why sony would cancel eight days.
