Developer Quantic Dream's last-gen cult hit Indigo Prophecy could not easily be categorized in any of the accepted genres of the time. It was primarily an interactive adventure, but it took a lot of risks with its gameplay and storytelling that were ultimately loved or hated by those who played it.
