PS2 Emulation Already Up And Running?

Is your PlayStation 3 running firmware greater than 2.10? Chances are it is, but did you know that apparently it's then already capable of running PS2 games then?

That's not exactly emulating graphics though, it's just reading a sound and video file with some text to go along with it.

It still has to display those as graphics, though. They're just not very advanced graphics. If what the article is saying is true, chances are it works purely because the graphics involved are very very basic and don't require full emulation of the PS2's GS.

Hmmm i somehow doubt it. Sure they may add it at a later stage but i doubt it's been there since 2.1

1.4 - i dont get what the fuz is about :S
the EE has been emulated since the EU 60GB launch SKU.. the problem with emulation is the GPU, which is much harder to emulate..
btw.. anyone have a link to the patent? i wonder when the patent has been submitted! if anyone has the link please post here :)

^^ This article still refers to the EE, not the GS. Nothing has changed. If this article is accurate, Sony just filed a patent for an already existing EE emulation. Nothing more.

1.7 - With 3rd party emulation becoming a reality...
With PS2 emulators reaching maturity on PC's that are less powerful than the PS3, it's going to be a real embarrassment for Sony if a bunch of hackers can put together a better emulator than they can for their own platform.

Idk if I can hold out until Tokyo Game Show for more confirmation on Sony's plans about this PS2 backwards compatability on all PS3s or not. August I plan to get a PS2 used with a ton of games I missed out on from PS2 that I really want to play, but if it was in September that Sony were to announce this all PS3 to PS2 compatability I could wait the extra month to save the cash. :)

Im glad I bought a 60gb. The only PS2 game in my collection that doesnt play well is FFXII. All the others run really well with HD scaling, aliasing & smoothing :)

You can create PS2 memory cards on any PS3 system, but they are useless on the ones without BC (at the moment)

Downloadable games is cool but I want to be able to play hard copies at some point. Maybe some of the tech boffins could tell me if this is possible?

There's absolutely no reason why not. If the PS3 can emulate the required PS2 hardware to just run the games, there's no reason why it couldn't load them from a DVD as opposed to a hard drive. In fact, this option would actually require less "work" on Sony's part (Not that any kind of ISO loading is difficult).

True, unless Sony wants to corner the market and sell DLC games only. Same price point, no manufacturing, no retailer cut and more advertisement from visiting PSN Store.

This is probably unlikely though (as Sony can keep the PS2 console alive longer), but I hope there would be an outrage if it were to happen.

I think if Sony were ever going to do that, they'd have locked out PS1 games as well.

Well. I've got a 20GB launch PS3, emulation means nowt to me. Thanks to a built-in emotion engine, I can also run PS2 back-ups from an external HDD thanks to Swap-Magic and USB Advance. Shine on, launch PS3.

Should be used else where. I think most people have moved on, and if you still have enough time to play both PS3 AND PS2 games, then you need to get a job.

I've got plenty of time for PS2 games, and I have a 9-5. Come on man:

SOTC/Ico
Persona 3/4
GOW/GOW2
DMC 1/3
FFXII (I HATE X!!!)
MGS3
GTA3/VC/SA

Then there's the plethora of lesser known titles, like God Hand and what not. The PS2 still has an amazing library, and it will be some time before it is forgotten.

What about the big share of the market that are still buying PS2s? Sony's core market are in the bag. It could be that they're looking to tempt over the masses with this and the wand.

1) The most unlikeable cast of characters in any Final Fantasy game (or almost any game I've ever played). Such whiny, angst filled teenagers serve only to irritate me. The designs were rubbish too.

2) Atrocious voice-acting.

3) A boring, overly soppy story-line with the thematic depth of a kiddie-pool in an ant colony.

4) Rather boring combat, skill progression was lame.

5) Suffers from too many cutscenes.

Overall, I just didn't like it. XII, on the other hand, was a nice step forward for the series IMO.

I was unlucky enough to have had FF X as my first Final Fantasy game. The horrible voice acting was what I caught immediately and that's one of my pet peeves.

Totally agree LoD! I very much appreciated XII's mature themes and story line as well as the infinite character customization. X was lame because only such lameness could have spawned X-2.

People who also appreciate FFXII? That's rare on this site. I loved the story and characters of XII, and especially the combat sytem and ZERO random encounters. Good stuff.

I'm making my way through FFX right now though, and like it. It's hard going back to that turn based system though.

FFX was fun but a lot of people make it out to be the best one, I think it was ok, I much enjoyed FF7 and FF8 better. I have an unopened copy of FF9 maybe I should open it and try that one?

The voice acting was rubbish but to be fair, it was the first jrpg that had it, and it's improved a lot since then. I thought Rikku and Auron were pretty cool characters.

...but it doesn't really matter whether its partly implented or not implemented at all. If its not completely ready we (The Consumer) will not see it.

So who cares.

11 - It has to have the PS2 software emulator in the firmware!
Otherwise all the Euro Launch 60GB and older MGS4 bundle USA 80GB PS3's wouldn´t run PS2 games. Those machines rely on the EE SOFTWARE emulation to work.

I'm quite sure Sony are improving emulation in the background as each new Firmware upgrade adds compatibility and small GFX glitch fixes as I have found. As recently as 2.20 My Euro Launch PS3 suddenly started running some PS1 games that it hadn't before also, so they are refining the PS1 emulation also. They just don't talk about it anymore.

I'm quite sure at some point PS2 emulation will appear in software purely, but as the article says, the main headache is the GPU. Thats the final part that was taken out with the newer 40GB and 80/160 GB models. So technically the article is pointless as it states the obvious.

I always thought they were working on this to be honest. even after they took bc out the newer models the option for ps2 game saves was still there. I personally think they trying to find a way to use to cell to upscale games via the GS, or they could be attempting to get the cell to do it all. Either way it would be great for me to be able to play the original god of war in HD even if it's only upscaled.

I see something like 3.0 having full PS2 game emulation software compatibility, so eventually, when 3.0 comes out, we'll be able to play any PS2 games on the PS3 =) That means however...what will i do with my PS2 =O?! can't sell it...any ps2 now is 99€ =P so...hmmmm

I hope that the PS2 emulation comes soon. I'll dump my death-prone 60GB and go for something better. NOT! (haha! got cha!)

I'll only switch PS3s if the software emulation provides better IQ and performance for PS2 games and only on those terms. Otherwise I'd rather still keep my feature-rich PS3.

i went out and bought a silver slim ps2 last month, my ps3 doesn't have ps2 compatibility but it doesn't really matter now. It would be nice though if they did bring it back and started putting ps2 games on the psn. I'd definitely buy some seeing how some games are hard to come by. (ico)
