PS3 May Feature Next Xbox Tech By 2009

SKOAR! writes "TeamXbox recently came up with a quote regarding the next generation Xbox to incorporate full HD stereoscopic visuals and 3D visuals. All the rumors/stories convene at the point that this technology shall be implemented in the next iteration of Microsoft's console.Refraining to sound like a fanboy, but Sony's current machine may already possess the technology for giving birth such a massive technology by 2009."

And yet every time a multiplatform title is called "weaker" on the PS3, its because of inferior processing ability.

Forget that the indusrty talks about PS3 exclusives when talking about general graphical benchmarks.

@jammy_70
Still six months left dude. And Sony did demo the tech at the 2009 CES.

1.4 - Hmm....
The article is a little controversial and I'm not tech savvy enough to refute or affirm what it says.

What I'm curious is what disc drive will MS use for its next console? I doubt it'll go DVD9 again. Will it encorporate some sort of new dvd tech solely for gaming purposes or will it join the blu-ray consortium?

Any thoughts?

1.6 - Lifendz,
I think HD DVD would be a logical choice for them. Technology doesn't need to be tested, has plenty of space, & would be very cost effective. If Blu Ray overtakes dvd as the mainstream, they probably would go that route just to take a selling bulletpoint away from Sony. As far as the article, it comes down to how quickly it is adopted by the mass consumer. Had Sony not implemented blu into the PS3, I don't think it would have taken off to the degree it has. Other companies had to lower prices quicker than they probably would have liked to compete with PS3 sales.

With Sony being far in advance of MS as far as TV screen and tech goes you'd expect them to bee just as, if not more, on the ball with this kind of thing wouldn't you? Given that last year and up to GDC this they were demoing 3D tech that they said was ALREADY obselete I imagine we'll certainly see something along the 3D gaming lines very soon and MS are prolly doing the same kind of thing.

Don't be shocked if the next Wii has it too-one gets it -they'll all want it.IMO, Sony are best placed purely because I knw they've been researching their own 3D compatible HD screens for over five years now. MS are probably doing their research with Toshiba or LG-someone else making OLED and advanced flatties.

@Grown Folks Talk

The problem with HD DVD is that it would be solely for games, while Sony would be able to tout the games/movie advantage.

HD DVD is dead, Toshiba don't even support it anymore and I doubt Microsoft will resurrect a dead format just to avoid using Blu-ray.

I'm not sure how much merit there is to these rumors, but I have been saying since the unveiling of NATAL that next year the gimmick will be 3-D graphics and Sony will probably lead the way, followed by Wii if they make an HD version.

Sony already has a prototype for this w/ GT5.

1.11 - I mentioned that Pirate Tom.
You would still be able to watch your standard dvds, but I commented that they would lose a selling point to Sony by going that route. Just a cheap option for them. Plus Blu Ray players are in the $100 range now, so it's not like people can't easily get 1 now.

Its not like MS talks up using the 360 DVD drive as a movie player. The only thing they talk about DL movies off XBL. Netflix. Given that, why wouldn't they revive HD-DVD?

Though they would still have to develop it if space requirements exceed 51GB.

1.13 - Part of my point.
It's not like Blu Ray will be highly expensive by the time the next system comes out, but all they really need is more space for game content, & to allow people to use their own hard drives like Sony does for saves. There isnt' enough space for all of the things they have available or will have to download. Blu Ray makes sense because it allows adopters the option through their console, takes away a selling point from Sony, & will be more easily upgraded due to the fact that it is a current format. I could see them go either route or neither.

Jesus f*cking christ, this is a rumor... of a rumor... of a rumor.

As for stereoscopic on PS3, I know it's already out there. It's been demoed over and over... and every self-important journalist acts like they are seeing something new. You STILL need a TV capable of polarizing alternating lines and polarized lenses before it works. It still means you wear dorky glasses to see the effect.

What really needs to stop are the trolls following every rumor around with another rumor of how their console already beats it. No one f*cking cares how big your chosen company's e-peen is. I find it a little scary that YOU care that much....

The thing is, and this probably going to be hard to accept, HD-DVD did not offer enough room.

If games like Blue Dragon had been on 1st generation HD-DVD discs, it still would have been a multidisc title. Two discs instead of three, but still multidisc which would have defeated the point of putting it on HD-DVD. The 51GB mentioned, which was a new three layered at 17GB instead of 15GB per layer, was a last ditch attempt by the HD-DVD camp to present the format as superior to BR. Ignoring the fact that at the time BR maxed at two layers and 25GB each for 50GB. Currently, 100GB are possible with 800GB in development though they were talking about a 200GB limit. There's no way HD-DVD could compete with that and MS knew it.

MS had two motives in supporting HD-DVD, promoting the HD menu format; and slowing BR in the market since Sony was going with their own menu system. That's still pretty much the plan, though now its movie downloads trough the 360.

@edgeofblade
Though its been demoed, to be honest, it was shown on the next series of HDTVs that are too expensive for the current market.

2nd@Grown Folks Talk:
And I'm saying that if they did they'd be using dead tech against one that's still growing in a field that might require the later.

MS's already messed up with upscaling, HDMI and DVD9 and will have to make a new console should 3D gaming take off, so why would they repeat the mistake of using limited, finite, storage space?

1.17 - ILL remind everysingle one of you who called the 2005 killzone 2 trailer "CGI" and "NOT ingame"
you guys apparently forgot that the game turned out better than the trailer.....

OH and lets also FORGET that uncharted makes every 360 game look like a game gear title.

and while were in a complete state of DENIAL, LETS also forget that uncharted 2 will be released this year, and the 360 has yet to have a title that looks or plays as well as uncharted 1 does.

oh yeah, the ps3 is not designed for games...its just a bluray player with better games than hardcore consoles!!

after all thats transpired, sony made the right choice by using the hardware they selected for the ps3. I expect them to push the limits for ps4 as well.

1.18 - The technology is already available
I saw a company demo an ordinary blu-ray movie in 3D using PS3. I asked the person doing the demo that he should used a game like GT5P to demo the 3D technology. He told me that he did and the few people became hundreds and no one want to leave the booth. All of them want to try out the 3D version of the game. Which turned out to be a headache because the place became so congested that they were warned of a fire hazard.

Its just a matter of Sony deciding which one to stick with.

The BluRay format has virtually no limitation when it comes to size, at least the companies still don't know the official stable layer boundaries. The beauty: All BluRay players that have been released so far (including the PS3) will be able to play these new discs without any update. So in theory, if a company has the guts and the content to fill a <insert rediculously large 3 digit number here> GB BluRay disc with 1 game only, you would be able to play that game by the time it comes out on the PS3 you own right now.

Another possibility would be a PS3 greatest hits collection of games, on ONE disc, imagine...

As for 3D, don't games have to support this kind of stuff? Would be easy to implement I think, just add another camera slightly next to the one already there and run it through the 3D filter. Well the coding is quite complicated, but simple relatively speaking, could be solved with a patch for existing games.

I get butterflies every time I turn on my PS3 and it says "A firmware up date is required"! PS3's tech is constantly being updating so I don't see why it wouldn't be able to do some things that "the next Xbox" can.

And yeah, it's already 2009 so shouldn't they being saying "By 2010" or "The end of 2009"?

GodMars is such a retard. So by his logic, multiplatforms looks and have better physics than Sony Exclusives. I.e. KZ2, MGS4, Uncharted, Heavenly Blade, etc.

"Forget that the indusrty talks about PS3 exclusives"

Everyone KNOWS how sh1tty 3rd party devs are with using the PS3. He's saying how inferior the ps3 is base on MULTIPLATFORM games. What a retard.

I guess the technology is there (right now) but the HDMI standards for supporting 3D have not been set in stone. That's the main problem. Looks like PS3 HDMI1.3 port can be updated by a firmware patch to just implement that protocol when its done. That's what they refer to, IMO.

I took the "in 2009" comment to be more sarcasm towards MS's news release. More of a tongue in cheek comment that Sony won't make the consumers wait until next year or for the next console to be released but rather that Sony has the tech already in their current console and can release it any time if they so choose to do so.

That's exactly what I was thinking. And yet MS seems to be getting credited for introducing the technology.

Forget that Sony is proving the claim of "Future Proofing" the PS3 by this example, while it took MS nearly two years to put HMDI into the 360.
