Criterion: Nobody's maxed out PS3/360

EA said they maxed out the 360, but not PS3. Criterion says if you think you've maxed out, you've just run out of ideas.

Nah neither console is maxed out...Mass Effect 2 looks better than ME1, Uncharted 2 looks better than Uncharted 1, Forza 3 looks better than Forza 2 and it will keep going like this.

Yeah and the difference is that was just an EA exec that wouldn't really have a clue about the technical aspects of game making. This is an actual Criterion developer saying this. Anyway I don't know why it matters when everyone can see that games continue to get better on both consoles. Some devs have said they maxed out the PS3, others say they have maxed out the 360, but when all is said and done games keep getting better looking on both platforms.

@Mitchell: Dunno dude, I'm a big fan of Sony but I still think the bullsh*t side is strong in you. What you want isn't always exactly how it is in reality. Xbox have some untapped power which may be used by devs. I just wonder why they don't do it. Unreal Engine is the cause?

1.13 - Criterion - "Criterion says if you think you've maxed out, you've just run out of ideas."
Ding, ding, ding!!!

Somebody give Criterion a cookie for understanding that it is not a hardware thing but a software thing. Devs, if they say they have maxed out a console simply have old code or inefficient code and need to hit the drawing boards to make better use of the hardware.

Criterion is right. But that doesnt mean everyone else is wrong. There is 2 different ways of saying a platform is maxed out. the first one is using all of the platforms processing power. This is basically what the EA person said. They use all the processing power in the 360 but not the PS3. The second way of saying something is maxed out, and arguably the most important one is that the code is written as efficient and smart as possible so that it not only takes advantage of all the processing power availible but also use that processing power in the best possible way. This is what Criterion is talking about and in this way we will probably never see the max of any platform

you know why i disagreed with you? well.. knowing what Criterion has done, i'll take Criterion's word for it.. knowing what you have done.. which is nothing.. dear god, who do i believe know? :O
and as for EA, i don't remember who said it, but remember that Criterion is part of EA..
also criterion favors PS3 over 360, if they were being fanboyish and "stupid".. then they wud choose PS3's side and not 360!

1.17 - There you go Ps3 owners....
You have Mitchell, the Guru of Ignorance as your guide for logic!

Hey, B*tchy Mitchy, If Ps3 is so great, why are you always here? Killzone 2 is a beautiful game, but has it drove sales of the Ps3 up that much?

Also, graphics provide games the power to exhibit some true works of art, and should be respected as so... But last gen, the Ps2 had the waekest graphics of all 3 consoles, and the thing is still alive til this day! So I don't think graphics mean as much to alot of gamers as you think.

If the 360 was in fact 'maxed out 'as some have stated.... or would like to believe... then how come Kojima Productions have stated that MGS: Rising will be graphically better than MGS4, and that MGS: Rising will be a game that pushes beyond anything you've seen on any of the platforms?

2.3 - Finally a dev with some sense
It drives me crazy when I hear devs say that either console (ps3 or 360) has maxed out. The devs who say this are freakin idiots. there is no way any development team has unlocked the secrets of programming for the cell processor RSX combo, or the 360's three core multi-threading Xenos and xenon combo. Games will continue to improve for a while, and will prove these morons wrong...

2.5 - What the SVP is **REALLY** saying: "EA PS3 titles arent as good as EA Xbox 360 titles".
"EA" didnt say it.

"SVP of EA Games Europe" said it.

What the hell does a non-technical know-nothing like a "SVP" know about coding?

Dave Shippy -- the lead technical person behind the design of both CPUs -- say the machines are **ABOUT EQUAL**.

That means if EA has maxed the Xbox 360, that they're getting more on Xbox 360. Because if they "Max out" the PS3, they're only going to get something that is **ABOUT EQUAL**.

So, is this SVP @ EA really saying "EA PS3 titles arent as good as EA Xbox 360 titles".

2.6 - Thank you
I don't think enough people know how related the two chips are, and what the real reason for PS3's slightly late entry to this gen was (didn't make a redundant production facility like MS did).

These machines are both beasts. The difference is going to come from what they do to provide exclusive experiences.

And after this E3, with MS actuall showing something in 09 (and PS3 gladly sitting on its well documented exclusives) we are in a for one hell of battle. And with incredibly solid install bases on both sides, neither are going anywhere.

so who wins? We do. And that can't be said about a lot of things in life.

I just want to say one thing. I notice this alot. Fanboys or what have you taking what was said and getting it twisted around. And that's the whole IBM guy quote thing. The guy never said the Xenon was equal to the Cell. All he did was give some humdum PR answer and stated that the PowerPC core was used at the core of both the Xenon and the Cell. That does NOT mean they are equal. Seriously if you people truly think that at this point then there is no help for you. I would think it's fairly obvious that ps3 and the cell are definitely the winners of that comparison. cause i'm pretty sure i haven't seen xbox360s turned into supercomputers curing cancer and used to study blackholes and so on and so on. The xbox falls behind a good ways when it comes to processor. Where it has the upperhand is the GPU which it definitely beats ps3's GPU. Then again that cell is such a beast it helps alot with the work so the ps3 gpu doesn't have to be that great. So, contrary to what Brock said, the two processors are not even remotely alike really. They share a PowerPC core, that's it. Like night and day after that though.

That being said, i agree that neither have been maxed out yet. If i have to be honest i say the ps3 has more headroom left, but don't think either have been fully maxed out. The problem on xbox side of things is lazyness and outdated engines.

quote qface64:
>what do ideas have to do with the hardware limitations?
>serious question?

You just have to think of new ideas of how to use the hardware. How to use the systems strengths and weaknesses. This will yield better performance and better looking games.

As others have stated, there is a reason why new games always raise the bar for both consoles. Even the wii with conduit.

Specs don't equal sh|t if you cant use them. Two games could use the exact same ammount of prosessing power but one could look vastly better than the other.

5.1 - People are forgetting that...
People are forgetting that Criterion also developed the middleware - RenderWare.

RenderWare's principal commercial importance was in providing an off-the-shelf solution to the difficulties of PS2 graphics programming. It was almost describable as "Sony's DirectX" during this era.

6.2 - PC superior...
...in its price.
PC can be superior at 5-10 times the price of 360/PS3
Show me a PC that can render any of the modern games for 300 EUR. When you buy a console (especially Sony's, but MS is moving to long term exploitation as well since xb360), if you skip the first year, you usually get to buy the hardware for 300-400 EUR and get to utilize it the next 7-10 years with games looking better each generation.
Buy a 1500-2000 EUR PC - you get to play modern games at top quality next year and a half... then, it is upgrade time (add 200-300 EUR)... and so on every 18 months. For a seven year period, you need to upgrade 4 times. You easily get to stupid amounts of money spent...

Some developers have also said they maxed out the PS3, but the developers that say that kind of stuff about either system are just trying to hype their games. Every time it is shown to be wrong. DVD or bluray capacities have nothing to do with visuals in games.

Neither console is maxed out guys so no need to fight. I don't understand why fanboys on both sides are so worried about it anyway. The two consoles are like yin and yang, two sides to the same coin and both do the same thing. Compared to PCs neither are all that impressive in any case. It's about the games guys. Be fanboys of the games, not the consoles.

Hey it's fine for you to like the PS3 more. I like my 360 a little more, but I have both. What I find hard to believe is that anybody would just happen to find all the games they like on only one console. Like I said, I like my 360 a little more and find more games I like on it, but there is no way I would want to live without some of the PS3's games like Uncharted and MGS4.

I think people that say that all the games they like are on one system are not being honest with themselves and are just being led by brand loyalty.

I dont think there is anything wrong with picking a favorite, aslong as you aint ramming it down the next mans throat and telling him that his purchase is wack just because YOU dont like it.you are both an example of how things SHOULD be on n4g`s comment section.

I love nike.. doesnt mean i dont buy the occasional pair of adidas, ya know? variety is the spice of life and thats why i could never be satisfied with one console no matter what the folks on here say.

Me,Im a halo/COD/GeOW/GOW/FORZA/GT/MGS /splintercell/masseffect/infamo us/mario/zelda/metroid/ fanboy..I like other games too tho:). No one machine has it all and im ok with that.

I will say though PC gaming is not for me .I dont care about how crysis looks on a souped up PC .Im happy what ive seen this gen from both the 360 and ps3, everything being in HD and all. plus i got a good surround sound system . I liked what i saw from the E3 stuff on both consoles and i was hoping neither was maxed out let alone the 360. So its good to hear criterion say that cosidering they use ps3 as the lead platform for there games. heres to seeing even more impressive stuff out of ps360 in the years to come :)
