Valve responds to L4D 2 criticism

CVG writes: "Valve has responded to the wave of negative feedback surrounding Left 4 Dead 2, asking gamers to "give us a fair shake" before writing the sequel off.

A Steam 'boycott' group has managed to amass almost 20,000 members, claiming that "the announced content of Left 4 Dead 2 does not warrant a stand-alone, full-priced sequel and should instead become updates (free or otherwise) for Left 4 Dead".

"We want to wait and weed through the comments, I'm already getting e-mails, and I'm responding to them," Valve's Chet Faliszek said.

"Looking back, was the Orange Box a ripoff?" He said, on initial complaints at having to "buy" Half-Life 2 again in the compilation..."

Your right people don't have to buy it, but the question is if the game is large enough to justify it as a sequel or is it just DLC content? Rockstar released GTA4 DLC a few months back and that was a pretty big update to the game and it was DLC not GTA5. Many people feel that Valve could've released it as DLC and got DLC price not full retail on a brand new game and that's the gripe and the growing concern most gamers have is the worry that other devs will do the same.

if they gave it more time, people would want it more.. they could get more content, make it better looking and maybe 'innovative'. this is simply a new map pack with some new weapons and they could have left at least a year before doing this so that for us the game is more chunky, not just a little change from the 1st installment...
...how about they worked on half life for a change?

You know, gamers are real hypocrites. They scream for new titles now but cry when a sequel is released soon after the first. Months after the release of Gears of War 2, gamers wanted a Gears of War 3 announcement. Everyone who has demoed the game at E3 has said the changes are substantial to warrant a sequel. If you feel indifferent or upset about the sequel, don't buy the God damned game.

valve is a good company. they care what the gamers want, the delivered some of the greatest multiplayer games ever, and they offer free dlc. cut them a break and give them a chance its not like they announced lfd3 before lfd2 came out. like cod does.. luckily i know which ones to avoid.. and it rhymes with gay garch.

dude im not saying about buying or not buying.

what i said is that this is not necessarily a full fledged game and valve are making us believe so.

i have been a fan of valve since playing the first half life. and have played most of their games. i think its just too early for them to release it, more time would mean a better game for the consumer, wouldnt you want a better game with more variety?

since when are we longing for new maps and new weapons?

howabout hearing what the consumer wants? and if what i read in forums is any evidence most gamers including myself are really looking forward for a new half life episode which they have been promising us for years, yet no info...

so howabout a company staying true to what it has always been? why are they suddenly craving for money? and dont believe that L4D2 is anything but a bag full of money for valve.

"the question is if the game is large enough to justify it as a sequel or is it just DLC content?"

I don't think that is the question at all. At and around the release of L4D1, Valve gave the impression that a flood of new content, like new characters, new weapons, new maps, would be steadily released (comparable to how Team Fortress 2 is receiving updates). This never happened. Instead, Valve is taking that promised L4D1 content and releasing it as a full-priced title.

That is where the conflict arises. It's not about whether or not the SIZE of the L4D2 content is large enough to warrant a new game. It's about buying in to an unfinished product with the promise of future updates, only to never receive the promised content. People assumed that because Valve was so good about updating TF2 that they'd be just as good about updating L4D.

Those people were dead wrong.

2 - i love l4d
i loved l4d, got it on day 1 and played it to death, no pun intended.
i was so happy that a game company was trying somthing fresh and new and very clever too. when these sort of games do well it pushes other game makers to try somthing new and not just to make games that we have all played 100 times before. if valve can cash in on a great franchise go for it, cos at the end of the day if you were in their shoes you would do the same thing.
give l4d some love.
dont be hater..

Left 4 Deads online modes are what make the game. It has huge replayability. Thats why the game is so popular. The game also changes every time. You never get the same spawn points for zombies twice in a row.

It's a matter of principle. They obviously enjoyed L4D alot and don't want to miss out on this game but at the same time they feel Valve are talking advantage of them.

I don't know why people keep bringing up ps3 fanboys all the time. The people complaining are just normal gamers. They are not people who buy 2 consoles just to show their loyalty to a company who doesn't give a sh*t. Obviously fanboys like yourself don't understand the term 'being walked over' since you people live your life getting walked over by big companies.

the game is great really no doubt, but you need to stop blaming PS3 fanboys.

What a unfair and extremely generalized statement. I have a Playstation 3 and a Wii system as well as my laptop now. With Left 4 Dead installed right on it and connected to my steam account, so yes playstation 3 owners can play it just as well as Xbox 360 owners just under a different means.

Also most articles hit the front page anyway.

8 - fair shake?
how bout you give the gamers a fair shake and make the game $30...asking gamers to give you a fair shake? that pisses me off gamers are not here to please the deveolpers the developers are suppose to please us.This is a money scheme plane and simple and quick cash in.I'm not saying the game is going to be bad...if it follows the same formula the first one had i'm sure it will be great. But, still it seems like this should have been DLC (i mean look at gt4?)obviously they believe the fans will pay up regardless..there isnt as much competition on the platform as last year.

I really find it hard to believe 360/pc owners are upset, if they are its just the pc owners who own ps3s probably butt hurt again because with left 4 dead 2 on the way it kills all hope of it coming to the ps3 360 owners aren't known for petitioning games but hopefully valve wont release it for pc and then everyone will be be happy

Edit at the 2 lovly people who responded to my comment exactly which console or consoles do you own be honest

second: most 360 owners dont petition against games because they are to busy playing games if we were going to petition a game it would have been too human, madden 07-08-09 and i wouldnt be mad if Left for dead 3 arrives in 2010 first one New York, this one New Orleans third one Alaska-snow zombies

360 owners arent petitioning for games?Wow now thats a first...cause i happen to know at least 4 petitions that came to my mind instantly.

Anyway my opinion is that 360 and PC owners have every reason to complain. The game isnt 1 years old yet for christ sake! Also LFD2 doesnt look or feel like a true sequel...correct me if i am wrong , from what i saw it seemed more like an expansion and less like a new refined game.GFX looked the same, gameplay the same even sound fx the same...

so yeah 360/pc should complain...cause as it is right now its a ripoff even worse than the ones imposed by EA...

What valve needs to do is release either a demo or run a beta for a little damage control. IF they say that this version is better than the first, PROVE it dont just talk about it. BUuu buuu BUT what about the E3 09 demo,What about it? Not everyone could get their hands on it so there is no other choice but to RELEASE IT TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC!

They seem to oversee that they are splitting the community.

Some people will be playing L4D and some L4D2, they can't play together. With DLC they could.

There is no excuse for not just making it DLC unless they are honest and admit they just want more money.

Gamers sure have a short memory. The Orange Box was probably the greatest value in gaming and Valve is no slouch with updates to their existing games as well as great deals on DLC. I don't see them doing this to milk their fanbase. Valve would be the last company to do that. I'm sure they have legitimate reasons to call this a sequel rather than DLC.

Given the fact that Valve gave up on the PS3 community because they complained they did a crappy job on they're ports of HL2 and TF2 and Gabe publicly criticizing the ps3 community. NOW when they're cash cow community is complaing about them selling DLC content as a new game, it's "Oh wait guys, please just take a chance and see our game first and you will see it's big enough to justify selling to you for another $60." Yeah, that probably entailed at most 3gigs of data, especially if most of the same sound effects and music are intact. I give another STFU to valve, either make this DLC, or start supporting the PS3 again. I've already shelled money for both the 360 and PC version for L4D1, and this is what I get, FU...

I'm not mad because I never bought the game. To me it felt like half of game in the first place. However a friend of mine bought it, and expressed how disappointed he was because he thought they'd really support the game, which they didn't at all. LFD2 definitely seems like content they were originally planing on releasing as DLC, but instead gave a middle finger to the fans. I'd expect them to rectify the situation, but now it'll seem like they're only doing it to cover their @**

Btw, would anyone be kind enough to list ALL of the features LFD2 will have, over LFD1?

Will this be bigger? Will the SE be squeezed, yet again, showing a sequel that will indeed identify itself as one?
I only saw gameplay footage, but the game looked the same, except in light. I was even disappointed to see a Boomer in this one... wtf?

You can tell me or any one of those people that are boycotting LFD2 "stfu and stop whinning" but are you willing to sit here all day and tell 20 thousand people to stfu, and not be paid one red cent for it?(lol)
