Remarkably slow PSN downloads?

PS3-Sense writes: "Some members of PS3-Sense notified us that the downloading of content, including game demos and patches, the last few days are very slow. For example, downloading a 304MB Resistance 2 patch to take preferably 379 minutes. The number of reports does not tell us that the problem is only one user, but several people who suffer from it. We had also an enormous inertia experienced when downloading a patch for the game SingStar. Sony has not yet ruled on the issue and is therefore still unknown how temporary and / or local problem actually is. "

I downloaded the Fat Princess beta a few hours ago, only took a few moments.

I'll try to load a game that requires a patch and see what happens.

PixelJunk Eden 2.0 - 36MB - 99 seconds.

Does seem quite slow.

From my experience Patches take much longer than PSN store downloads. I can usually download a demo in about half an hour for say a 500mb file. But when its the same file size for a patch it takes hours.

I got Burnout paradise last friday and I put the game in at 9.30 and the patch finished at around 11.30.

If you have slow downloads from PSN, its 90% your own connection.

I was getting 1.4 mb/s the other day and always get full download speeds (that my ISP will allow depending on being capped etc).

Most people who lag on games and have really slow store loading/downloads is because of your own connection. (90% of the time)

However, i really hate that you cant download patches for games in the background or something, and i do find that patches to games are often slower than downloading from the store (maybe they are not PSN servers but like the servers of EA or GG or something?).

I also have VERY little problem with downloading new FW updates, usually takes about 3 min to download and 2-3 min to install.

1.6 - yesterday i dl the patch for LBP...
the the first attempt started out fast then got slow, so i canceled and tried again, it was in the 107 minutes or so. So I tried it one more time and third times a charm, took 70 seconds. Though i am sure that it was more my internet connection than the servers.

1.5 That's not true, I direct connect my consoles and have anywhere from 12 mbps to 24 mbps depending where I'm connecting to in the US. I still have slow downloads on PSN most of the time. A 250mb update on PSN can take longer to download than a 1.5gig demo on Live for me.

I think it has more to do with the amount of activity on PSN and how far from the servers you are. I live about 60 miles from the Live servers and can download something that's over a gig in a 5-10 min, the same download will take some of my friends over an hour. I don't know where the PSN server are but I have a feeling I'm pretty far from them.

I dread Qore releases because I know its going to take forever to download.

In my experience, firmware updates are the worst. bloody thing can take hours! i dont understand how they take sooooo much longer on ps3 than on 360, as i assume im getting both files from a server in america somewhere.

Complete opposite for me , if i download before 4pm (UK time) it flies , anytime after that is not even worth bothering about , to say it's slow would be an understatement.

Your ISP probably throttles your connection speeds at prime times. I'm in the UK and with BT as my ISP and the same happens to me.

The problem isn't PSN, it's ISP's throttling people's speeds during "orime times".

Karum-you are the winner! It does depend entirely on your ISP when it comes to this BS. U will say that often U can get stuff downloaded from Live to 360 a little faster but even then its no great difference.

Back on point, though, IISC it was when we were trying to access the sexond influx to the closed Home beta when the penny dropped for me over PSN dl times/capabilities. Everyone on the PS3 Uk forums havinmg no joy downloading it was with the same ISP as me and when I tried I also failed to even connect. I'm with Tiscali(have no chouce unless I wish to get slower general speeds than 8meg BB OR want to pay BT twice as much as tiscalifor the same meg rate)and one poster said that Tiscali had at onepont sorted out the issue inly for them to start throttling PSN and Dls.

I had it explained but not being tech minded it was lost on me but it was def people with the same ISP as I have getting this sh1t.

Now I always know that if this shizzle is going on that it isn't Sony but my isp.

Patches for me take about 10 minutes when they are 50+ MB Otherwise game downloads off the PS Store are reasonably fast 1 MB per second.

Whatever...

Some patches can take a while, but I usually just restart them if they get stuck at a certain %. Then they download just fine.

7 - It depends
For me, there have been times when my PS3 downloaded slow as a snail, and other times when it could put the xbox 360 to shame it was going so fast. Most of all, though, the author reporting is obviously located in the EU, which may be the reason for his massive download times... or he just has a slow connection which is also a possibility

My Xbox360 has always been faster than my PS3 when it comes to downloads. My PS3 connection is at 95% i don't know why but when i'm trying to preview any trailer from the PS Store it keeps buffering same with video rentals in SD and HD. I pay extra on my cable bill to get the fastest internet connection possible and most of the time i'm downloading during the middle of the night so that's not the problem. I agree the PS downloads are slow but it's free so i'm not complaining...

Yep PSN downloads are absolutely horrible, and this isn't an isolated case at all, most of my friends with PS3's also suffer. It annoys me that Sony dont offer a subscription fee for a superior service as the currently its rubbish. 1 out of 40 odd times I'll get my full speed which I'm getting on my PC a meter or so away, sometimes it'l be average, but often I've honestly received some of the worst download speeds in years.

Has anyone noticed that the downloads significantly lower in speed when the controller turns off?

I would very happily pay what I pay for XBL if I could get the same interface features and performance, its a small price to pay for the convenience and improved experience that it could offer. But instead were left with Home :(

Have had my ps3 since launch and now have lived in two towns since and am on my 3rd ISP in that time and while the second place I subscribed too was unbelievably fast for some reason they have all performed better than expected. I have only had 2 or 3 times since I have had my ps3 that the download went rather slow and that was with the first ISP I had and that is why I got rid of them. I wish the second place I subscribed too was in my new town cause with how fast things downloaded to my PS3 and PC I swear I was at the nexus of the internet. But anyway there could be a ton of reasons why downloads are slow from crappy ISP to just a lot of people downloading the same thing at the same time. Unless it is very localized or global I can't see how you can say either way what the issue is wether it's PSN or or individual ISP's.

Ive seen a 360 and a PS3 plugged into the same router, we tested a few games at the sametime, and Xbox live by far shreds the PSN in downloads, its frustrating as to what the issue is with PSN not beeing more speedy.

17 - My experience
I was downloading the 20 free songs for rock band ( I have it for both systems). The 360 one was at 47% when the PS3 DL started. The PS3 DL finished when the 360 one got to 96%. Now, I was on the 360 chatting, but that should not cause that much lag/slow down.

My Killzone 2 patch took like 9 minutes :( Installed in 10 seconds though. I live in New Zealand so I assume it's something to do with how far away I am from where it's being downloaded from because my internet is decent.. by NZ standards anyway :P
