PlayStation 3 Uses Heat Pipe Cooling

In an interview with Japanese site PC Impress Watch, Sony 's Ken Kutaragi said that because of the power of the Cell processor and the RSX graphics chip, PlayStation 3 will use a custom cooling solution, with heat pipes. Heat pipes conduct the heat much faster than conventional cooling, and are commonly used to cool high-end PCs.

the problem was not NONEXISTANT you bafoon. Mine overheated, and trust me it was in the open not on the carpet. I have the plastic not removed issue. So before you spew off about your conspiracy theory remember by the numbers I have heard about 15% of them were returned as manufacturing defects because of the plastic protection cover not removed. And I got mine at 12:30 Nov 22 2005, so i was in the first batch. SO you can stop posting in here and the water cooling unit that the problem was a shame, Sony did it, blah blah. It happened they fixed em and were moving along.

Microsoft cools the 3-core CPU using a fairly beefy heatsink outfitted with heatpipes. Airflow is supplied by the two rear fans in the Xbox 360; the air is channeled over the GPU and CPU heatsinks using a duct. The larger heatsink on the right is atop the CPU, the smaller heatsink is for the GPU.

Heat Pipe 101 - (PS sorry if i sounded pissy in my first comment. Rough day at work.)

The heat from the CPU boils the fluid in the pipe. It then evaporates and travels to the cooling fins and condenses. When it condenses it releases heat and that is transferred to the fins where they are cooled by air. Once the fluid condenses, it is absorbed by the wick (anything that absorbes water or fluid) and taken back to the CPU where the whole process starts over again.

most heat pipes work the same. It is the principle which they work under I believe. Let me check to be sure and I was saving the picture I made on the 360 innards when my PC crashed since it is like 104 in my room lol I will do it again and post later after dark so you see on the 360 how it works.

Heat has been a huge problem for both the 360 and ps3! These damn next gen consoles use alot of power and generate alot of heat. I hated how everyone jumped on the 360 when some were overheating when we all know the ps3 is gonna have the same problems. The heat pipes are in the 360 also I believe!! #5 said it all!! Now just get the console out Sony so we can have some competition!! Competition is good and even though the 360 is gonna win (lol) we still need that competition to push the developers!!

I believe the Wii will outsell the ps3. 200 for a new nintendo system. Parents and kids will gobble that up. Even the die hard sony fanboys are having issues with spending 600 plus for a system with no killer app at launch. Nintendo brand owns 9 of the top ten best selling games in history. xbox 360 will have a 10 million consoles sold lead which will draw developers even more. Its all about making money. Wii will definately outsell the ps3. And all the ps3 fanboys will say "well of course...it sells for 400 dollars less than the ps3. " They will make excuses to why the wii sells more and the 360 sells more. "Of course, 360 came out first. " Fact of the matter is....All three claim to be next gen consoles. Its not Microsofts fault that sony is adding the blu ray player to their system which delayed their launch and raised the price of the ps3 through the roof. Its not Nintendos fault that they took advantage of sony's slippage and priced their console at 200 to snag all the casual gamers that sony once had. Sony is like rome. They built and empire but forgot about their core base and now they will be overthrown by the people.
P.S. I will get a ps3. I'm just not excited about it. Sony messed up in many areas this time around.

I give posts multiple times why I think the 360 has better hardware or the mix of hardware will work best, with links or facts. Just made posts about the attach rate of the consoles last gen and the 360.

Sometimes it's just fun to make a comment like this, which is partly based on facts (that the Japanese also think the PS3 is too expensive and the questionaries shown that many go for Wii for sure).

Achira, if you would like to be the first to throw the stone, throw it at yourself will ya. You're closer to ssj with postings and leaving no facts then myself if I may say so.

And for the PS3 I hope they implement the heat pipes, maybe they can crank up the CPU then again to original promised speed of 3.5 Ghz :)

BTW you can bring my mom in, I don't care. Sony raped us all by giving us a PS2 with a DVD drive that was so sh*tty that it stopped working after a relative short period. Not being able to play the games one bought for enough money anymore.

When one would like to repair it, one had to pay a lot of money and the PS2 would be gone for a few months. Unlike the great 360 support, where the 360 will be repaired or given a new one in just one or a few weeks.

Furthermore, Sony raped us all before by saying the PS2 would be so much better then the Dreamcast which it really wasn't. They raped you and me by the ToyStory ingame footage (NOT) and the emotione engine which only emotion it gave to us all that we had to cry and be sad because it wasn't true.

They cheated, lied and raped us all. And with all the delay of this PSZero, all the CGI footage shown which will not be ingame, the PSZero is a PC, blabla they are going to rape a lot of people again for a lot of money.

With the heath pipes, it shows also why they had to delay. Ofcourse also because of BetaBluRay seeing the problems with the stand alone players now, but also the yields and heath of CPU&GPU. Implementing and talking about heath pipes a few months before they want to launch doesn't sound real good to me. So maybe one should expect the rumours of downtuning the CPU to be true to 2.8 Ghz. instead of the promised 3.5 Ghz.

It would be normal seeing Sony's history of overpromising and underdelivering. So my friend I don't hate you. I bet even my mom would think you can be a nice guy, maybe you are raped too by Sony but are still denying it.

Oh yeah, if there is a Gears of War or Halo 3 killer, why don't I see them presented? I only see MGS4 (which looks really good I must say but still how much is CGI and what is ingame), furthermore not much. Motorstorm which doesn't give images like CGI @ E3 2005, Warhawk which made me laugh my pants off. Put it back on fast again because I was afraid for Sony popping up behind me raping me again ;)

Okay now I love my 360 alot but the comments about PS3 zero and all this crap needs to stop because your the one starting flamewars just as we got done dealing with SSJ. I don't prefer to play PS2 and I won't buy a PS3 just because my preferred system that I am used and accustomed to is the 360 but to make ignorant g@y comments like that arn't needed. The PS3 will have just the same problem as the 360 overheating on occasion I'm sure, no product goes on market without defects initially as much as we all would like them not to however I don't wish any overheating problems on anyone (except SSJ) :) because I know once I got my 360 on launch I would have killed someone if mine overheated and wouldn't work

As far as the PSZero named, I still see enough xbox 1.5 describings flying around or people called xbugs.
