PS3 Attach Rate Up To 3.4 Wii Attach Rate Up To 3.6

Now that we know what the software and hardware sales are, what about the spending habits of the gamer? In other words, how many games does the average PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii owner game? The NPD Fungroup estimates that the tie-in ratio for both the PS3 and Wii are fairly close, actually. In January, the average PS3 owner owned 2.7 games, and the average Wii owner had 2.2 games. For February there was a notable increase, as the numbers shot up a point. Now, the average PS3 owner owns 3.4 games, and the average Wii owner has 3.6.

serious.. gotta get the credit card bill down to a reasonable level to purchase some games, some might be just like me whereas I use it as my home entertainment center... something is just so cool about cycling through your dvd collection and pressing a button and having it play. I only have resistance and vf5. I'm thinking about motorstorm and baseball 2k7. We'll see.

Getting deals doesn't hurt either. I just paid off my pre-order for next week in Austraila. To give you an idea of what games cost here, normally they were $100. X360 games are $120. I just bought Resistance $88, Motorstorm $88, F1 $88 and VF5 $99. 4 games (I'm helping to improve that attach rate ;) for $363 is a pretty good deal. Plus as soon as I get it home I will register online to get my Casino Royal BluRay movie. I think there are giving 20 or 40 thousand of them away in OZ, cant remember the exact number, but I'll make sure I'm in early so I dont miss out. Next week is going to ube so cool. I better finish GRAW 2 this weekend so I'll have time to play my new games.

PS I forgot Tekken DR and Flow. Be gettin them straight away too.

$100 might sound like a alot to you but thats what games have always cost here going back to SNES days. Even with X360 games going up to $120 its still not bad. Prices had to go up eventually. I'm not the kind of person who complains because they're cheaper in another country. A $60 game in the US would be $80 in Australia with the 75 cents to a dollar exchange rate but it doesn't work like that. It cost what it cost and if you want to ride you need to buy a ticket. I guess it has alot to do with where you live and the standard of living in that area. Games are a lot cheaper in Indonesia for example (mostly pirated, but even if they were'nt) its a 3rd world country and you wouldn't expect to pay $AU100 for a game there. Do you know how much stuff you can get for $AU100 in Bali? You even get a happy ending. Anyway my original post was just to show how happy I was to get PS3 games $32 cheaper than X360 games considering all the flack PS3 has copped over price.

WOW!! I didn't know it was that bad. But is it more expensive with reason, I mean here in the states Min.Wage is $7.25/hr with about 16.5% of that going to taxes. So Even at $60 we in the states are always a little pressed especailly with the cost of living being what it is. In California especailly Fuel cost $3.20 a gallon and the avarage worker has to drive at least 35 mile round trip just to work.

So in austrilla, is it about the same as it is here as far as money made and money spent or is it worst? cause if it's worst, $88 would really be killer! for a game.

Australian dollars people. You get almost 3 aussie dollars to the pound. So au$100 is £33. So $88 is about £30 - bargin my friend!

If I was to buy games from the US - $60 would be about £30 so I'm jealous!

Fuel costs! America gets the cheapest fuel in the world! It's £3 per gallon here - so that's $6!! And don't be mistaken there are loads of poor people here, in fact even my mum can't afford it. The price of houses here is crazy also - there are no first time buyers anymore. My house cost £200,000 ($400,000) and it's just a two bedroom terraced house :o

There are more Wii owners than PS3 owners. So the amount of transaction happening in terms of software, is still lower when you comapre it to the Wii and the 360 which had an attach rate of an average of 5 games per console.

I'm not boasting, and even though I'm not impressed with these figures, I still think it's progression considering the fact there arent many good games on the PS3 imo

I remember at launch it was under 1 game, due to all the damn scavengers trying to make a quick buck. It has more that tripled that since the end of the year. The Europe launch actually might bring that down a bit, just due to it being launch and i doubt that people will be buying 4 games with each purchase. Summer should be a good gauge of where things are going to be headed... its funny though, Europe still hasnt seen this lovely gadget. Good times are ahead.. good times.

Sorry dude, I never said the PS3 would have 2 game attach rate at most through 2007.

I said this:

PS3 attach rate @ launch 1.5
360 attach rate @ launch 4.5

I expected the attach rate in february to be 2 to 2.5 at max. Not FIVE like many Sony fanboys believed.

So now it's on 3.4. That's still not five. So I was closer then the fanboys back then saying it would be five already then.

Still a 3.4 attach rate after almost a half year. The 360 had 4.5 @ launch. The 360 had 5.3 in October last year. The PS3 units sell slow, the games sell slow, period

Uhm Littlebigplanet? Well it's nice. But seeing Bioshock, Halo 3, Forza 2, Mass Effect come out this year I don't think Home (Second Life/Sims) or anything can cope with the 360 games + the premium online service

TheMart we don't need to get into a game comparison. What i can see what the 360 doesn't have is that it's games don't appeal to a wide demographic. It is still seen as a hardcore gamers console - and the games coming out for it cement that position.

The games coming out this year for the ps3 are wide and ranging and promise to be quality titles. We won't know until we see more of them of course, but hell I'm excited about some of them...MGS4, DMC4, LBP, HS, Lair, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Killzone 2, Motorstorm, Resistence, White Knight Story, The Getaway, L.A.Noire, Ninja Gaiden Sigma (you can't ignore that - people, especially in Japan, are going to see that running on the ps3 and will want it), Singstar (big seller in UK), WarDevil (!!), 8 Days...

What you fail to realise when comparing LBP to those games is that LBP isn't just a game, it's a way of gaming (that's sounds so zen) - but still from the buzz we can tell it will appeal to the masses, even if obv doesn't appeal to hardcore gamers (aka fps lovers)

I assure you that I definitely haven't overlooked sweet lil Motorstorm...It's just that I'm all gamed out as a result of having TOO MUCH to play with between my PS3, PSP, and Wii (which has collected about an inch of dust as of late.) Errr...let's call it an attempt at 'efficient time management'...and that supurb Resistance has me jonesing for a little more fps action, which has me looking in the direction of F.E.A.R. later this month. R6 Vegas and Double Agent are looking quite tempting as well...and sheesh, I'm talking about the span of the next month alone!

I feel sorry for Rainbow Six. I dont think it got the props it deserves, maybe it will find more appreciation on PS3.

I came out around the same time as Gears and that completly (unfairly) overshadowed it. I feel so bad because I think its a much better game than Gears. Its just more my style of gameplay and I think the cover system is supperior too. Because you hold the trigger to take cover and just let go to get off the never find yourself getting stuck on a surface you tried to run passed or doing a roll passed a wall when you meant to put your back up to it. Plus having you soldiers breach charge a door while you go in through a different entry is just too cool. Prey is a good game but I'd suggest RB6.

Fear, oblivion, Armored core, rainbow six, and splinter cell is about to drop. so thats an RPG, a MECh game, Stealth actioner and 2 shoters freaking awesome stuff, although like i mentain, i'm not a fan of oblivion so i'll prolly pass on picking it up... but i do know plenty will. it got pretty high reviews on the 360, and they will in good right too, the game got a graphic upgrade. along with just about every other game thats coming from the xbox360...

I love it, but I have Unreal 04' on my PC right next to my PS3...why play anything else? haha. I said I was closer to this attach rate with my prediction of 2 to 2.5 games sold by February on each PS3 unit then you Sony fanboys back then said 5 million copies of games were sold by 1 million of units (that was shipped like I said).

So 2 or 2.5 (which isn't at the beginning of February, but two months later at the end of March so more time to sell again) is closer to 3.4 then 5 that was stated by Sony (shipped again not sold).

thats alot of Resistance and Gundam Musou in a PS3 household. I bet this is interesting from a developer's standpoint, ("release the game, and they will buy.... even if its not all that great").
Anyways... i would see how this would be logical.
I think the 360 had such a high attach rate b/c it Microsoft pretty much gave up on the Xbox and put all their effort into the 360 launch. Sony on the other hand is right now is still releasing AAA titles on the PS2 but the PS3 launch was pretty awful. And Sony didn't market it the PS3 as much as the x360.

This obsession with attach rates is ironic given that all three console makers have professed a desire to attract more casual gamers. Casual gamers, by definition, buy fewer games than not so casual gamers. So any console that actually succeeds with the casual crowd should expect to see its attach rate decline. I'm no industry insider, so could someone kindly explain to me why such an inordinate amount of attention is being paid to the lousiest potential customers? Shouldn't a software developer prefer a smaller installed base that buys a lot of games than a larger base that doesn't buy too many? Anyway, if this equation is valid then the PS3 currently has the worst of both worlds, because it has the fewest number of owners, and they've been buying even fewer games per capita than the more numerous, and ostensibly more casual wii owners. At the moment, only one among the three next-gen consoles enjoys a good balance between a healthy installed base and a robust attach rate. Even if MS stopped selling any more 360s tomorrow, the current bunch of 360 owners has already demonstrated time and again that they could be relied upon to produce million-selling hits for their console. So notwithstanding whatever faults anybody may find with it, the 360 seems to have attracted the most desirable blue-chip customers in the business. On the other hand, assuming its hardware and software are as great as some would make it out to be, it looks like the PS3 has nonetheless gotten stuck with the motley sort of stiffs and pikers that game developers can afford to live without. If Resistance had launched with the 360 instead, I wonder how many units it would have sold by this time last year?

24.1 - Actually, If I'm to count Wii Sports

I suppose my Wii attach rate would be five: Zelda, CoD3, Rayman, and Trauma Centre, respectively.

The major difference between my Wii attach rate and that of my PS3 is that the Wii games were purchased almost immediately, and closely together. The attach rate for my Wii has been, and probably WILL BE static for quite some time to come, as I quite honestly have no immediate intention or desire to play or purchase any Nintendo titles. In the first few weeks, the Wii was all the rage for me (and granted I still love my Wii)...but my lust is pretty much now deadlocked strictly on my beautiful big, black George Foreman look-alike. Because of this, I just know that my PS3 attach rate is gonna eclipse that of my Wii, and just skyrocket very, very soon.

Ahh, poor, poor Zelda...we barely got to know each other!
